Here's another old one. In honor of the recently departed, this series was about a family of four. The oldest son was slow, while the younger was a genius, and the father stole the show.

Although there have been several incarnations of the series, it hasn't been on tv in a few years. But the characters are also popular advertising pitchmen.
The creator was also responsible for an early magical girl series.

Just thought of an important clue. This is a gag comedy series, with no overall plot. It's not as shocking as Shin-chan, but more silly than Sazae-san.
This movie, which was later followed by a series, is based on a classic, well known series of sci-fi novels.
In the film, a young earnest farm boy becomes inducted into a space police force after receiving an item from a dying patrolman that contains information which can destroy an evil alien empire.
When you go "old school", you really go classic.
