Forgotten anime? Goldfish Warning!

Post by yukineko »

I'm going to cut and paste this directly from an entry for one of the cels in my gallery that I'm working on, because I need to give some background:

Long ago, in that far away land of the late 90's, I was a newbie to the Internet. I spend way too many hours surfing for the most inane of things-- all that was cute. Looking for Sanrio-related pages let me to a website called the 'Cute Cute Petshop' where people could 'adopt' animals from anime to put on their website. The same person that ran this site also had a website for a silly little anime series called 'Kingyo Chuuihou' or 'Goldfish Warning!'. In this series there was this cute little flying pink Goldfish named Gyopi-- but I forgot about the series as the years passed.

Cut to Otakon 2004: I was looking through a discount plushie bin when I come across, of all things, a plush of Gyopi! Considering the show ended in 1992 (it was replaced by Sailor Moon, and had many of the same production staff), I was awfully surprised to find him! Since he was incredibly cheap I bought him, and thus begun my quest to see the show. Much to my dismay, any sites that had the show on their trade list had been defunct for years, and the only thing I could find was a movie. There also didn't appear to be any DVD release of the show on Yahoo! Japan, so that also was out. I forgot about the show for a few months, a little frustrated that it had vanished into thin air.

Cut again, this time to earlier this week. I was again searching on Yahoo! Japan, and I find a promotional poster seeming to indicate that a box set of the show is being released in Japan in March. The only problem? It's going to be about $500. I suppose I can at least cross my fingers that maybe this release will result in some American company taking interest in the series and picking it up.

I guess the whole point of this post is to ask if anyone has seen this series? I would ask if anyone had a copy of the TV show fansubs, but I'm not sure if there's a rule against that for this forum. It seems to be one of those older series that might get swept under the rug in favor of newer, prettier series. From what few English webpages I can find, it apparently was a fan favorite of sorts many years ago.

Anyone? Bueller? :)
