Anime for the classroom

Post by hanaeleh »

Hello all... I was wondering if I could call upon everyone's help for anime we can watch in the classroom (high school)... my students' tastes are different from mine, and while I would love to watch the entire series of Kenshin  I don't think that'll fly past the exec board. :P

The biggest problem is that we've gone through the students' personal collections now, and so I thought I'd ask if you guys have any suggestions. What we've watched so far:

DBZ
Kenshin
Weiss Kreuz
Escaflowne
Princess Mononoke
Gravitation (after school, not part of the "club")
Descendents of Darkness
Cowboy Bebop
Excel Saga (just the first few episodes) 8O
Street Fighter
Berserk (the first few episodes)

Bah... there are a few more, but I can't think of 'em at the moment.

On the calendar for the next month:

DN Angel
Ghost in the Shell
YYH (If I can talk them into it!)

We haven't yet watched Inuyasha, Witch Hunter Robin, FMA, Naruko, Trigun etc. because no one owns them, but they're on the "to be watched when someone buys them or when they come out dubbed" list.

Most of the club is made up of boys, who get bored with too much talking. :P So action is probably a necessity. Nudity or sex is definitely out of the question... think of what Cartoon Network would show, even on adult swim. I work at a continuation high school so we're a bit more lax on the *occassional* swear word as long as they're not over the top. Also, subtitles just aren't flying, so dubbed is also a necessity at this point.

Thanks anyone for their suggestions!

Ranma seems to missing from the list, although I don't know if it qualifies because of the nudity-without-being-really-nudity-because-it's-just-funny-factor.
If Mononoke passed I'm sure it can be used as a precedent t use some more complicated movies.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

do want suggestions of series which have been released on DVD, or are you able to watch computer-supported file formats?

IGWT- Haven't seen Ranma... but I'll go ahead and rent it if you think it's appropriate. :) Can't be any worse than Ninja Scroll a friend lent me last week. 8O

Rei- DVD, VHS or VCD's... I had to donate my DVD player to the club, which plays VCD's.

It's nowhere near the level of Ninja Scroll.
It's basicly a romantic comedy. Most of the nudity is suggestive and the odd times the main character shows her breasts is because she doesn't know how to act like a girl.

I guess that means .hack//sign is out of the question. *lol* I'm surprised they watched Gravitation and Descendants of Darkness though (considering their shounen ai-ness). Maybe you could show them Fake one day. :dgrin

As for suggestions... Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, of course! You might give Fruits Basket a try too (that might be too shoujo though). I'll get back to you on any others I can think of....

ETA: They might like Samurai Deeper Kyo.

How about Oh My Goddess? I gaurantee boys love it. :love2
But, I don't know about the apropriateness since I've only seen the first episode and the movie.
Vampire Princess Miyu (especially the OAVs) would give them something to think about but, you be the judge whether they have the attention span.

Well, if someone in your club had Inuyasha, I think it would have had enough action to sustain them, although it's quite a long run :D.

I also agree that Fruits Basket is a good suggestion because the dub is one of the best I've heard. However, it is much more on the shoujo side.

OMG could be good, I don't think I remember seeing anything that would be offending.

I'm still thinking so if I get new ideas, I'll post them :D.

How about Full Metal Panic? It covers nearly every category that might appeal to them: high school, adventure, mechas, fighting, angst, humor and romance.

And if they liked what they saw of Kenshin, they might go for Peacemaker Kurogane... which is much shorter and actually has a relatively decent ending. :)

Oh! I know! Ikkitousen! :deek

Ok, seriously... how about Trigun or Lost Universe or one of those? Trigun is funny enough for any gender while having a good message buried in there...

No Gundams.....personally I liked Gundam Wing, *49, episodes and a movie* but the storyline might be a little complex, but great action. I also liked Gundam Seed *50 episodes*, but has more about relationships involved so maybe that's why CN's ratings were low on it. But there has to be a Gundam series that would be good. Maybe shellie will add her comments on the subject.

I also think DN Angel is a good choice and of course, agree with Sakura-chan about Inuyasha and Fruits Basket.

Naruto would be great, but no dubs yet.

Get Backers is also a suggestion. The guys would love Heaven.

And if you want one with little storyline, action and stupid *guy humor*, no offense, there's always Gokudo.

I will think about it some more...

Heaven is heaven. :love2
And GB is also great because it mixes short storylines with extremely long ones.

I second the vote for Get Backers.

Also, being the Lupin fangirl I am, I have to suggest Castle of Cagliostro! :D There's plenty of instances of action there-- including a great car chase and Lupin ignoring the laws of gravity multiple times to do some daring jumps. Since it's Miyazaki's version of Lupin he's not as much of a lecher as normal and more heroic. Fujiko also is sized more 'normally' and wears army fatigues rather than her normal skimpy attire. :)
