Is GX really Yugioh?

What does it have to do with the old series? I've watched like the first 20 or so episodes and other than the appearance of Yugi in the first ep and the mention of names it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the old series duel monsters. I visited Janime and is showed images of some GX characters including one in Egyptian clothes, but apart from that I don't see the link. Is this just going to follow some kid through school without any sense of mystery like the old duel monsters? The old one had spirits and puzzles and items....what's this one have? Report cards? Have I not given it enough of a chance or is it doomed to become another Pokemon?

Even my kids have watched it and said "It's really dumb. It doesn't even have Yugi in it!"

I think it is just the next generation of duelists in Yugioh or something. It is turning into an endless pokemon kinda thing (not nessesarily a bad thing though)
