So far HxH, a bit at a time
If HxH is old news, just skip this. This is neophyte, new-show primer ponderings!
It's been one - or two - of *those* weeks, but I've been inching (or centimetering, for the Euro crowd) my way into the series. I've seen up to ep 7.
It's a damn good thing they brought in some sympathetic background for Leorio, because I was getting really annoyed with him - he was like the Bill Paxton character in Aliens, all complaints and no redeeming qualities. (Did I miss it, or did they mention the badges were stick-on? Because it was really distracting with him wearing his badge on his bare chest!)
Gon is like - Bambi. But I like him alot (better than Bambi, in fact), he's just too ingenuous not to like. He's like little Goku (DB), but without a tail!
Like Kurapica. It's actually funny how much he intellectualizes about everything. Good for exposition, besides. Such a contrast, actually, because his statement about why he wants to become a hunter and that he's afraid his rage will fade was so emotional, and yet he's obviously well-educated and a rational observer by nature.
Killua is pretty - and interesting. He was so unemotional, unemotional, - and then the expression on his face when Gon talks about tracking Leorio by his cologne!
I'm watching (listening to?) subs, so I was intrigued by what voice they'd give Hisoka - deep and lethal? No, tenorish, but it suits him. I'm surprised they didn't give him that really (to our ears) effete type of voice like they gave Pegasus in Yugioh (and one of the Princes in Basara, who was a really oily, murderous pr*ck too).
The eps seem a little slow-paced, but I'll let that pass, since they're building a pretty complex world and that takes time.
That swamp they had to cross was something - LOVED the "face" in the grass that ate 'em up! (And very glad my lawn is much more well behaved.)

Well, I just finished the OVAs and have to say I am definitely a fan of the series. Yes, I will agree with others that GI3 was little much, but I still really liked it.
I did like all the characters in this series....except for the random bad guys who you are not supposed to like along the way. Probably why I like the series so much.
I think my favorite would have to be Killua. Hisoka was the character that I least liked in the beginning but my opinion changed more and more as the series progressed. I really wish there would have been more with Kuroro. Gon's stubborness and Kuripica's angst were a little much, but I still really like both characters.
I just want more....they didn't finish it...which is so common in anime!

Well, as I have announced several times, Killua is my favorite character. I love the whole story of growing up as an assassin and not being able to have friends. He seems so cold but really deep inside he's just a kid who wants to have fun. I like him the best because he's the deepest of all the characters. His character design is great too!
Kurapica is my close second fave. The whole mystery of whether he's a he or she's a she. Seriously, I can agrue more that Kurapica is a female than I can male. But as I've stated before in other threads, it really doesn't matter.
Although since those threads, I've thought about it a lot. I go with "she" after having revisited the series.
I wish they would build on Leorio's character. I liked him because for me he was the comic relief. He thinks he's so great and then these kids beat him all the time. He thinks he's such a loner and yet he "needs" Kurapica. He thinks he hates kids but Gon and Killua latch on to him as does he to them.
Gon was the only character I kept thinking "okay enough's enough". He was very annoying. I don't like those kind of characters. He was so naive and so pushy and so stubborn. I kept wondering if he had ANY good qualities.
I don't care one way or another about Hisoka. He's just there. But I was very intrigued by Kuroro. I want to see more about him too.

Kurapica's chest is shown on the cover of manga vol 14, but it's blank, without markings for a boy or a girl. It doesn't even have a line drawn to delineate the right arm from the torso.

Congrats on finding your lost episodes, kira!
Enjoy!
Yeah, I have no idea how the question of whether Kurapica is a male or female started. I know when I was watching it I never even thought about it. It was only after I posted here I was watching HxH that people started giving me their opinions. Well, then I had to wonder myself. It was the shower episode that made my decision for me that Kurapica is a female. They don't show that far down. (Remember, cels are painted more than what appears on tv.) And if you're not well-endowed ie flat, the cel cuts off about where you would start to notice. (Boy, that's hard to write pc on the w w w.
)
It was really the moment after the shower when Leorio comes in that put the nail in the coffin for me so to speak. Kurapica's reaction was ALL female.
But as I stated before, it's viewer's choice so kira decide for yourself and no one will try to change your mind.
I think it's fun how a character can be taken in completely different ways. And from the look on the manga cover, sounds like the author is having fun with "the big question" too.
