Yes, you're about to have quite a surprise on the Silky/Dispell front ... It's interesting how the series sets you up with a repetitive format: each episode has similar moments time after time: Dispell explains his plot to a passive, apparently captive Silky, Mikael watches the shooting star and then reads the Book of Chaos, etc. But once you've accepted this as the "way the show is set up" ... watch out! When these expectations are violated, the effect is not just surprising but chilling as well.
It's hard to think of a show that's simultaneously as comical and frightening as this one ... Beckett's existential turn on Charlie Chaplin, Waiting for Godot comes to mind.
Could not have said it better -- thus, I feel compelled to "borrow" Sensei's words here.
"Chilling" is a perfect way to describe the way I felt when Dispell's little "surprise" came to light. Although not the first moment in the show that led me to believe there was something quite deep going on beneath the surface of pretty colors, I think it was the first thing that was a huge, huge shocker to me. I mean, I was sitting here, watching this cute, funny, endearing show with all the pretty artwork and bright colors and ...
WHAMMO! Like a two-by-four right between the eyes.
I remember thinking, "Oh my. WTF have I gotten myself into here?" >.O
But, you know what? I loved the ride!! One of the best shows I've seen in a long, long time. *is still grateful to Sensei and Vapalla for showing it to her*
My absolute favorite moment is the "Sara" one.
Where she becomes visible. |
Although it happened early on in the show, that moment was so packed with emotion, so beautiful (on an intellecutal and visual level), and so meaningful. I have to admit, it was my first clue that this show was much, much deeper than it let on at the surface.
And, as much as it dug claws into my brain, I loved the opening song for this show, too. I would be really upset over it taking up residence in my head, and yet, I still chose to listen to it at the beginning of each episode. I could have hit fast forward, but I didn't. CYCLING, CYCLING ... LA, LA, LA!
