Looking for romantic anime recommendations

Post by wELCOME cONSUMER »

I don't watch anime very often anymore, I never seem to have the time.
But I'm looking for some recommendations on romantic anime series.

Official releases only please, I don't like taking the time to search for and download anime, if possible.

Some series I've enjoyed have been:

Ai Yori Aoshi
Midori's Days
Ah! My Goddess
Pretear
Sailor Moon
Maison Ikkoku

Feel free to post titles, vague plot summaries, links, images, whatever.
I'm curious to know what's out there, what's worth watching and what I should avoid all together.

For example, Kare Kano was fantastic! until the end ... Anno botched the finale of that series.
Huge disappointment, I felt like I wasted my time and money. Wish they'd make another season or something.

Anyway, let me know what you like and why! I'd love to check out some new series.

Well,

I think both Escaflowne and Fruits Basket are romantic if you haven't seen those yet ^.^ I love Escaflowne for the extremely romantic ending and Fruits Basket because every episode is sweet and romantic. I won't give away any spoilers because these are great shows! They are both fairly short compared to other anime series such as Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball, so if you are busy these are great!

Hana Yori Dango (released by VIZ, 40+ episodes)
Marmalade Boy (released by Tokyopop, 70+ episodes)
Kimagure Orange Road (released by Animeigo, 40+ episodes)
Fushigi Yuugi (released by Pionner, now Geneon, 40+ episodes)
Ayashi no Ceres (released by VIZ, 24 episodes)

Oh yeah! I definitely liked Escaflowne and Fruits Basket. I'd like to know where FB will eventually go in the manga as well.

I've read some of the manga from the series you've suggested darksuzaku, but for some reason I forgot about the respective animes! X|
Didn't occur to me to check out the animated versions. Thanks so much for reminding me!

I just thought of another series I loved sooo much: Brigadoon.
Plenty of action and robots, but oh man, that romantic ending! What a tear jerker. :l

I know Peach Girl has been licensed by Funimation, another manga I enjoyed.
Anyone know if the anime is as good or better? I honestly didn't agree with Momo's choice in the manga. Hopefully the anime will end differently.

I really dont like to many "romance" shows however if there is a good balance between it and comedy I usually really like it.

Such titles I recommend are:

Kimagure Orange Road (previously mentioned, great title its OOP but you can still get it from ebay from time to time, shame they lost the rights this past July.)

Honey & Clover - There is a mild romance going on between two of the main characters however I mainly recommend this title because it will seriously move you. Not to tears but really make you think about life, I can't really put it into words its just trust me and check this title out as it is a one of a kind masterpiece.

Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi - Not as much romance as the first one, this one is more towards the comedy side however there is still some romance in this one. I greatly enjoyed it and if you liked the first one chances are you will like this one.

Vandread - Great title, Men and woman are seperated on different planets. Basically the series takes place in space and has several very cool looking battles sequences however there are some romance between the main characters.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien - This has to be the most drama/romance title I have seen, very little comedy and often times get quite serious. If thats your cup of tea you will like it.

Interesting. I've never heard of this, can you tell me a little bit more about it?
I must confess, sometimes the drama-ramas fascinate me. :P

Most of the romantic anime I like the most haven't gotten picked up (or fansubbed for that matter) and half of the anime that I DO like the most are adult anime titles. :?

I liked D.N.Angel, Rurouni Kenshin first OVA (I can never remember its release title :P ) and Please Save My Earth.

Fruits Basket's last chapter will be out later this month, I got the ending I wanted.

Paradise Kiss is a nice short romantic story, only 12 episodes. But it won't be released until Dec.

http://www.animelessons.net/kimiganozomueien.htm < Its a review on my site, I didn't write it but its a decent overview. Main reason I linked it was for the pictures so you can see a bit more into it.The series itself is 14 episodes, from your post above i think you will enjoy the series heh.

If you want to get a feel of the show I suggest checking out the episodes currently on utube http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... rch=Search . If you want a bit higher quality vids and dont mind torrents you can download it here http://www.mininova.org/tor/121062

Annoying PM sent! :D

I forgot about Paradise Kiss as well! Another manga I enjoyed very much.
I've even seen clips from the anime, just kinda forgot about it I guess. X|

Thanks for the link EOP, that looks like a very interesting anime. It's definitely up my alley

Keropi, I don't mind adult titles. I'm trying to keep my focus in the romance genre and there are several adult titles that are on the romantic side.

Overall, I prefer the one season series (with 13 or so episodes) simply because they are easier on my schedule and tend to be more concise.
So far, these recommendations have been eye-opening! I've drifted somewhat from the anime scene in the past year.
It's kind of nice to get some insight from peers.

I know this should probably be posted in another topic, but I wanted to ask you birdie, if you know if they intend to make new episodes of Fruits Basket from the new manga? I suppose that is probably a negative but I thought I would ask ^.^

How I wish they would! But so far all indications are there won't be another season. :(

Aww, that stinks! :O

It's always disappointing when a manga continues on to a better conclusion than the anime was capable of achieving.
At least in the case of something like X/1999, Clamp worked directly with Madhouse for the conclusion of the TV series,
despite the fact that the manga has not concluded (and probably won't for a while).

I'm also kind of surprised that Marmalade Boy, as an eight volume manga, was transformed into an eighty episode anime series. 8O
That's just... wild! I know the author worked with the studio, creating new characters and such.

Hmm... well, most of the romantic anime I love and enjoy are only available through fansubs :?

Saint Tail - Story of a Catholic schoolgirl named Meimi who doubles as a thief (named Saint Tail) and has a nun-in-training for a best friend. Her "romantic interest" is the son of a detective who actively tries to catch Saint Tail, without realizing just how close she really is!

DVDs are out of print, but you could find them at Amazon or Ebay used.

Princess Tutu - Ahiru, who is really a duck enchanted into the form of a girl, falls in love with a prince and wants to protect him. It is her job to become Princess Tutu and restore the pieces of his shattered heart, which he lost in a battle with a crow. Fairy tale-ish setting, REALLY beautiful artwork and music!

Every other officially released romantic anime I can think of have already been mentioned 8)
