Top 20 Anime OP's

Post by JWR »

I was checking out youtube today and came across this work that was put up as a result of some polling as to the 20 best Anime Op.

What in your mind makes the best Op sequences. To me giving a feel for the anime without giving the plot away , Introducing the characters , and the theme music are all important elements. A good Op can hook you into a series.
Here is what this group came up with.

20-16

Is there only one link to 20-16?

Try saying that with less context.

Heck...aren't there any I've Sound Openings in there at all? I was kind of hoping for at least one. Maybe there's one there that I just don't think of as being "I've Sound". :)

I thought that at least Higurashi's first season Opening might be there:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hHKmiRwyBU

but I apparently not. :(

Interesting choices they made. Most of the anime are fairly recent as expected. Older anime Openings tend to be forgotten and a number of fans weren't around when those anime were popular.

Out of those twenty Ops they picked, the ones I re-listened to at all back-in-the-day just for the heck of it (not because I was watching the anime episodes themselves) were:

Chobits, Full Moon, Ai Yori Aoshi, Happy Lesson OVA, Maburaho, Suzumiya and Evagelion.

I liked the Gatekeepers TV series OP more than the OVA's and I liked the Kurumi first series Op more than the Kurumi 2 Op.

Sorry, but I'm a poor judge when it comes to what makes a good Opening. :) I'm completely subjective when it comes to Openings. The reasons I've liked Openings are:

50 percent because I like the song :P
20 percent because I like the animation that went with the song
15 percent because I like the anime, characters and artwork in the Opening.
15 percent because I like the way they put everything together.

I agree - both the music and animation in it are great.

Agreed on this point too. When doing a quick list off the top of my head, I realized I picked 90s anime first (Escaflowne, Bebop, Fushigi Yuugi). With the series in recent years I would have added Champloo, Tactics, GitS SAC: 2nd Gig, Saiunkoku Monogatari. I was glad to see Elfen Lied on this list though.

It was good but seriously....there are a lot better openings than some that they listed. I did not agree with Number one big time.

About five and a half years ago I made a SVHS tape of anime Openings and Closings that I liked at the time. Some of the Openings/Closings on the tape held up better than others on repeat viewings. Some of these I don't like too much now, but rewatching these takes me down memory lane.

Here's the order I recorded them onto the SVHS tape:

Hmmm..wonder what the criteria was for this...
Thought this was an all "best cg anime op", but then the #1 spot wouldve been out of place.
90s had so much better OPs.
Things I thought were going to be on the list that I didn't see were like
Magic Knight Rayearth (esp 3rd OP)
Rurouni Kenshin (esp 2nd OP)
Bakuretsu Hunter
Himikoden
and so on.

Yeah...it seems that way doesn't it? Doesn't seem like I feel like rewatching many anime OPs the last several years. Or maybe I just need to be reminded more of the ones I liked from 2002 to 2007. By 2002 fansubs were coming in file form and it's easier for me to forget about those. :shrug

Yeah! Himiko-den who could forget that OP (Pure Snow):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9vCCWyapZs

...although the first time I seen Himiko-den was in file form (around Oct-Dec. 2002). I recall I was trying to watch all the gaming anime I could during that time. :)

I’m more of a 1980s-1990s anime fan.
But even if I limited myself to anime from the ‘00s, I prefer:

Bakumatsu kikansetsu Irohanihoheto:

Speed Grapher:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNM_WfOGAM0

Gantz:

Death Note Op2:

Heat Guy J:

Koutetsu Sangokushi (even though they’re all guys)

Daiguard:

I've definitely watched Speed Garpher and the Death Note 2nd OP more than a few times. /no1

Sadamitsu has one of my favorite OPs too:

How could I forget that one. :bwall

Lain should be on any top 20 list of anime openings. Great song, great opening animation that set the series mood. Wolf's Rain as well. Some omissions were baffling but it is a random you tube thing after all...
