What renews your love or gives you "newbie" feel?

Post by sugarcels »

Have you ever sat down to a really good show/movie and thought "THIS is why I love anime!" - or maybe you found something from when you were just starting out (not necessarily your first show, but something from that era) that makes you feel "fresh and ready to see more" again :)

1. Spirited Away is something I watch when I want to feel happy or I need a "recharge" after seeing a couple of bland, generic, cookie-cutter anime (Mamotte Lollipop, oy).

2. Sailor Moon, Project A-ko, Tenchi Muyo. These were all some of my first exposers to anime as a fan, so when I see them I get a strong feeling of nostalgia, almost like I'm a "newbie" again and there's hundreds of shows out there I've yet to see. Like I still haven't noticed all the cliches and common themes in anime yet and I'm still caught up in the "foreigness" :)

Well Sailor Moon, DragonBall Z, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind give me the most nostalgic feelings. (probably because I've watched them so many times in my lifetime.) In fact sometimes it just takes the theme songs from those series to make me feel giddy.

But the series that recently made me feel like a "newbie" again to anime was GITS SAC series. Everything about it just felt fresh and new. Even though I read the comic and watched the original movie before I seen the show. :) Something about the ploting and character delopement just hooked with me. And it made me crave more anime. X|

Anytime I stumble upon a title that I instantly know "I have to check this out" and I do, and it kicks ass, this reminds me why I love watching anime 8)

for me it would be some classic DBZ episodes, like Super Vegeta or the
Majin Vegeta episodes :D
there are a few naruto and bleach episodes that do it for me too, like
neji vs spider dude and ichigo vs kenpachi

I haven't had lulls in anime viewing and I rarely rewatch anime these days (even my favorites). So I'd say that the anime that gave me "fresh newbie" feelings have been the anime I enjoyed the most over the last year:

1. Code Geass 1st season --- lots of crazy plot twists and likeable characters to follow. I got a lot of laughs from those plot twists. They were SO nuts. :^^:

2. Kanon (2006) --- Stories that took me away to a fantasy world.

3. Death Note --- didn't like the last third as much, but I enjoyed this because it was suspenseful, unconventional and fun. The evil facial expressions were classic. :)

4. Black Lagoon Second Barrage --- Over-the-top action and lots of crazy characters. Made me bust out laughing on many occasions.

5. Higurashi Kai --- Many layered plot, but I never try to figure it out. I just watch them as it come up. It's something to relax my brain to.

6. Darker than Black --- The ending didn't leave a permanent impression on me, but I enjoyed the series quite a bit considering it was mainly an episodic series. Beautiful artwork.

7. Toward the Terra --- Really enjoyed this space epic. Plenty of ups and downs and emotional turmoil. :bawl

8. Asatte no Houkou --- I like how the story flowed along very naturally and unforced. Too bad the manga went in that weird "hen" direction. :D

9. School Days --- A little TOO psycho for me, but I still found it to be campy, over-the-top amusing. :puzzled

10. Heroic Age --- Thought the first half was weak, but I quite enjoyed the last few episodes. It was great having a more "out there" science-fiction anime because I hadn't seen one for so long.

I hardly have time to watch the stuff on my watch list. But watching anime that makes me go "wow, I'm glad I watched this" makes me happy that I watch anime.

I loved the first season of Higurashi and I liked how Higurashi Kai answered some questions that I had.

Darker than Black was a good series

D. Gray-man, a great series and was fun to watch with my kids!

Asatte no Houkou was a great series, wonderful feel to it.

Seirei no Moribito is a WONDERFUL SERIES!

Nagasarete Airantou is a GREAT, FUNNY & THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN ENJOY TOGETHER.

As for new series, I am really enjoying Mokke, Blue Drop, Kimikiss, Shion no Ou, ef a tale of memories, Clannad (much better job than the original), Bamboo Blade (I didn't like it at first, but the 3rd ep got me interested), Shugo Chara (I've only seen ep 1, but my kids rave about this one), Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun & Baccano! (this series took some getting used to, but I'm starting to understand the story, now that I am on ep 9).

Sailor Moon gets me back to were it began. I had a period were I keep seeing ssome really 'eh' anime and I sorta felt a little sad. But lately I have seen heaps of new anime and I am back in the anime mood. I love the new The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiyu (not sure if i spelt that right :P forgive me) I reckon that is going to be a 'recahrge' anime for me in the years to come.

Most recently it was Lovely Complex, it had been quite a long time since I checked daily for a torrent update. It is quite simple in its theme but had the combined comedy of Ouran and the relationships from Kare Kano. I had read the manga and loved it dearly which is why I decided to watch the anime, so very glad I did.

Concerning past animes are two that each and every time I rewatch will always renew my love of anime.

One of course being Tenshi ni Narumon, it has many hidden messages within each and every episode but unlike others that do the same it is told in a way that confuses you by using looks... as they say never judge a book by its cover.

The other is Escaflowne: A Girl In Gaea, an excellent movie showing the affects of depression, how you can either control it or let it control you.

Great storytelling... one that utilizes its imagery to help the story along, take one away and it just another anime. That to me is what makes an exceptional anime.

As far as I know, this is the first they made of Clannad as an anime (are you refering to the movie?)

My friend's friend had the games and sadly he showed me the Air and Kanon ones first, then the Clannad, which wasn't as good. So when the anime came out, I didn't expect much, but it actually was a lot better than I expected. Though Air will always be my favorite. Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse you.

I'm actually quite impressed with this Fall's anime lineup. It also nice that I have more time to view, though usually it's during weekends and I try to cram everything in lol but I get to catch a few episodes during the weekday when I'm not working.

Neat. Thanks for explaining that.

No need for spoilers. I've completely avoided Clannad threads since I'm trying to avoid spoilers. :)
