For those who watch fansubs

Post by duotrouble »

Do you wait for your favorite fansub group to release an episode or do you watch the first one available?

I know that might sound confusing because I couldn't think of a better way to write it. :? But here's my example. Every week DB puts out an episode of Bleach and Naruto. Sometimes they're a little slow due to things going on in their lives so other fansub groups release their copies first. I always wait for DB. It's the same with Gundam 00. I always go with Shinsen no matter what the wait.

Am I alone in this? :^^:

I tend to check out the first one's available, I have noticed a few groups who seem to translate better, but if I don't have to wait I won't :dgrin

That's a hard question to answer.

If I'm not keeping up with the series, then usually I just go with my favorite group. But if that group I like gets too far behind I get worried. So when that happens I might get another group's fansubs and replace it later with the group I like.

If I'm keeping up with the series, then I usually get the first one that comes out and replace them with the one I like. Unless the group I like was the one that I got first. :D

Out of the last sixteen series I viewed:

1. Six times - I went with my favorite group's fansubs, but theirs came out only 2-6 hours after the first groups. So it was very easy for me to wait.

2. Five times - I got the first groups, but later replaced them with my favorite group's fansub.

3. Three times - I got it from the group because they were the only group doing the series.

4. Once - I only went with my favorite group even though their fansub came out significantly after another group(s).

5. Once - I went with a group because they were always several episodes ahead of everyone else.

I guess I'm more of a "first" person than a "favorite" person. But I often get with my favorite group's too so it's hard for me to answer for sure. :shrug

I agree with CP!! :o

Most generally, I don't have time to dl it when it first
comes out anyway, so i will always go with DB, but if
I have the time, and am wanting to watch, doesn't
matter who puts it out there first, that's what I dl.

Whoever has the episode I want to watch, I will download :} I can't say I have any favorites unless they happen to sub a lot of what I get. I have learned to avoid certain subbers, though, if I notice their work is terrible (ugh, the people who sub Kirarin Revolution, I'm telling you... if they weren't the ONLY people doing it...).

Well, if you have enough bandwith as i do then:

- I always get the first thing available so i can watch the episode fast.

- If i'm keeping the series then i'll also download the version of my favorite group when they are available (both in avi and mkv as the HD player connected to my TV doesn't handle mkvs very well yet).

- If i have more than one favorite group for one series i'll get all their versions until i can decide which one i'm keeping. Sometimes one group drops a series, so in that case i tend to keep the version of the group that completes it.

It depends on the series. If it's one that I'm just sort of following, I can wait for my favorite subbers. If it's one I absolutely love, I take whatever comes first.

Of course, being an English major and someone who can understand Japanese fairly well (my vocab is pretty good for Shounen anime :^^: ) sometimes the earlier releases make me angry. Even some of the "good" translations can have things wrong with them.

For example (and this is my pet peeve in translation--I've seen it happen in professional manga translation as well) the word "warau" is often mistranslated as "laugh." While it does in fact mean "laugh," it also means "smile." If the character is not laughing, then "warau" does not mean laugh! Manga will have laughing sound effects drawn in. So, yeah . . . huuuuuge pet peeve of mine. It's really not that hard to tell the difference if you just look at the context. If someone is translating based on a script . . . well, he/she shouldn't be. You need context to translate anime/manga correctly. This includes knowledge of previous episodes/series.

Sorry, went off on a rant. :emb

The series is always an important factor.

Well, at least I'm not completely alone in this. :^^:

I've always been able to wait. I actually love the torture of not knowing what's going to happen next. It makes my brain work creatively. :)
