I wish I had the time, talent, equipment and patience to make AMVs, but alas no such luck. I did enjoy these.

For comedy I'd go with
The Harassment of Kyon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHy4n3RWqjk
or
Spectacular Anime
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QAV7M_QuJI

For Story
Center of the Sun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qf-aAVxE8s
or
Mitternacht
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVJjPHZ4gd0

There are a slew of others I like: Silent Lucidity (CCS), Tainted Donuts, Euphoria, 'Bustin, I am NOT gay!, True Faith (Pokemon), Souls of Rage and Sorrows (Escaflowe Movie), etc., etc., etc.

I know that the majority of the AMVs I've listed were shown at AX but in all my searching they are the best I could find.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I second that Kestrel video, Aethel. It is definitely one of my favorites & one that I thought of immediately when I saw this thread!

Speaking of favorite videos, I would recommend everything by Kestrel. However, if I had to pick, I would suggest her Nanami one, & The Promise (aside from the "Bury My Lovely" video).

A couple of videos that I remember loving:

Sailor Moon: *Sailor Saturn - (Phil Collins - "In the Air Tonight") This is a really old one, but I still love it.

Utena: *Juri - (Erasure - "A Little Respect") I still can't hear this song without seeing this video in my head.

Also, has anyone ever checked out Anime Hell? I was recently introduced to it & I thought it was hilarious! If you haven't seen it, check out one of the 2 & 1/2 minute ones & see what you think. I enjoyed all of the 60 min one!

Thanks for all the suggestions - these are all great!

I'll try to find links later, but I guess my favorite is the Speed Racer video set to the song "The Distance" by Cake. I think the same person may have also done the Refreshments "Banditos" Lupin III Castle Caglisotro video that I love. I also like the really, REALLY old "Hair" video - a bunch of anime scenes set to the song Hair from the musical, probably the first AMV I remember seeing.

Hector the Collector loved these things with all his soul,
Loved them more than shining diamonds, loved them more than glistenin' gold.
Hector called to all the people,"Come and share my treasure trunk!"
And all the silly sightless people came and looked...and called it junk.

I've always loved AMV's because they really can showcase an editor's passion for the genre, sometimes resulting in a true work of art.
There are many "top-shelf" examples I've collected over the years and still watch quite often, but there's only one that I've ever posted*.
I put it up a little over three years ago, and I gotta admit that it still haunts me... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHil2SAjlq4
