annoyed at fansubbers not translating

Does anyone else get annoyed when fansubbers don't translate everything?

Because Japanese culture has been a part of my entire life and I'm interested in learning more about it, which includes currently learning Japanese, I understand a few words. However, if I didn't know what "nii-san" meant, I'm be really annoyed at FMA: Brotherhood and Bleach for always putting that in the English translations. I can't tell you how long I went not having a clue what "gambatte" meant.

I realize fansubbers do an awesome job of quickly and usually acturately translating series, etc. so average people can watch them. I appreciate them for that. :) But if you're new to anime, you'd like to know what these words mean. Like I said, luckily for me, I've learned a lot with the hundreds of anime I've seen but it seems like the fansubbers are slacking more by not translating "everyday" kind of words or phrases.

Hahah, didn't you watch that video that someone posted here on a guy talking about the same subject?

I think that they want to make the show seem more "japanese" but adding those words just distracts the viewer and makes him think about what it means, instead of the sub having a nice steady flow of english words....

No, I didn't know there was a video about it. That's too funny! :^^:

It's how I best learn a language. I listen to it, read what it means and then the next time I hear it I usually know without reading. The fansubbers who "take shortcuts" mess me up. X|

I'm against anything that takes me away from my viewing experience. :)

But in my case it's not when they don't translate everything, it's when the translator uses too much localization and popular slang. When a Japanese character says something like:

"She's not getting her grove on"

It's distracting and it takes away from my immersion in the story. Makes me think I'm in the U.S. instead of Japan. Sometimes I see a translation like:

"I like her ass!!"

Makes me wonder what the wording of the original Japanese was. :D
