What anime first episodes did you not like...
1. compared to the rest of the series?
2. because you felt it was a poor first episode to start the series off with?
I know a lot of people who dropped shows after seeing first episodes because they disliked them so much.
These are some shows that gave me unfavorable impressions after the first episode. I wish they had started the shows with a different first episode:
1. Book of Bantorra
2. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya first season (when it was out of sequence)
3. Rental Magica
4. Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu (Legend of Legendary Heroes)
I'm sure there are others, but I can't think of any right now.
What first episodes did not work for you?
Not so great first episodes

One that comes to mind is the first episode of Earth Maiden Arjuna. This is an adventure that brings all kinds of great life lessons to mind, such as, if you accidentally kill your girlfriend taking her on a motorcycle ride along the beach (because you were distracted by a big glowing seagull), and she suddenly jumps up from the hospital bed, runs up several flights of stairs, and grabs a rope being lowered by an unmarked black helicopter, don't try to follow her!
She will only cause you eleven episodes of trouble and confusion.
Unfortunately, I liked the Yoko Kanno soundtrack so much that I watched on through at least six more episodes, enough to confirm that it did not get any better. However, in the process I learned:
If every nation in the world reduced their energy consumption by just 10%, anime series this bad would not have to be made.
Don't skoosh caterpillars in your garden. They are just eating the parts of the vegetables that aren't good for you anyhow.
If you buy the right cell phone app, you can dial your boyfriend's number and float in the room beside him as an astral projection to see if he's visiting porn sites or texting another girlfriend during the conversation.
I'm sure the last five episodes are equally educational.

The series that suprisingly comes first to mind:
Katekyo Hitman Reborn-in general I didn't like the beginning of this series and out of those I love it's still got the worst start It's a bit random and seems almost pointless. But as the series progresses that changes (not necessarily rapidly either ) However after finally forcing down the beginning I genuinely love the series and even some of the more annoying characters (not all...but most
and...
Law of Ueki: This series in general seems to have it's really boring moments and I remember trying to watch the first episode about 3 times and stopping. It probably doesn't help that I don't like either of the main leads
Law of Ueki I've stopped and restarted a few times, but it wasn't just the influence of the first episode, it's a series that has some fun moments but for the most part I just think it's boring
Katekyo Hitman Reborn is a favorite and I've actually rewatched most of it (excluding some of the beginning), but it's a great series and I actually download the episodes just as soon as they come available So makes me very happy I didn't drop it due to the beginning,

12 Kingdoms sticks out in my mind. Even after the first full disc I lost interest very quickly.Keropi wrote:What anime first episodes did you not like...

OT but one of the great things I liked about the dvd boxed set of Rental Magica was the ability to play it in cronological order rather than broadcast order and it did make a lot more sense.
I wish they had that feature for shows like Jinki Extend and a few others that jumped around with time.
"Like the wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we are, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment." Harlan Ellison

Ah Arjuna! That show was too preachy for me. I'm not much into themes like that. I think I only watched the first three episodes and that was it. Yeah, some shows you just can't finish. Just...can't go on. Can't...go...on.
Hmm...I forgot about Rental Magica's episodes being originally out of order as well. I wish the show didn't end the way that it did though. It was kind of unsatisfying the way it went with Honami near the end there. Kana Ueda voiced another character with a Kansai-ben accent.

Naruto jumps to mind.
I absolutely hated the first episode. To this day, it's just an episode to get through as is episode 2. The series didn't get going until episode 3. I hated episode 1 so much that I didn't even attempt to watch it again until many months later when I randomly caught a mini marathon on CN, which was airing the Forest of Death episodes. I remember telling a friend how much I wanted to like Naruto. We started watching it and I was surprised those episodes rocked. I decided to try again and I'm glad I did. I think it was then that I made my rule to always watch at least 3 episodes before dropping a series.
