Best 80's / 90's anime

Post by Sparta101 »

I recently watched an aime which started in the 80's called legend of the galactic heroes (although it ended in the 90's). Almost all the animes I watch now where made after the year 2000 most of which are good and entertaining, however in terms of story they all fall every short. legend of the galactic heroes animation is poor however the story was amazing I would personaly call it a master piece, so much so I just could not stop watching one episode after another in fact I managed to watch the entire 110 episodes in just over one week (luckily I was on holiday from work that week).

I have been watching anime ever since I watch the Guyver on TV back in 1996 and since then I have seen countless movies and series, which started me thinking how many amazing series or movies have I over looked because they where created a while ago or have poor animation (by todays standars).

So what are your best 80's/90's anime, has anyone seen Legend of the Galactic Heroes?. I have done a rubberslug search, but no one seems to collect any cels from there, maybe it's because rubberslug has been updated or maybe Legend of the Galactic Heroes is just under rated?.

I haven't seen it either, but my impression is that it is very highly regarded by people whose knowledge extends back before the 1995-2005 era. The Anime News Network bunch loves it: the rating is heavily skewed toward "masterpiece" (highest rating). It's currently riding #18 on their "Top 50," five positions up from Fullmetal Alchemist.

It is a shame that the RS search now only searches for words/phrases mentioned in the commentaries to items. You could have a large collection of cels from LotGH now, and it would be invisible unless you mentioned the title of the show when describing a cel.

I did search for "Reinhart," one of the main characters, and found these two galleries:

Anrui Ukimi's Plastic & Paint Collection
JCaliff Cels

I mostly know of it because the animators who worked on it (a mighty host!) later worked on series that I collect. I kept noticing the connection as I'd do background on sketches I was trying to attribute to a particular artist.

Edit: I find that JCaliff now has a non-RS site that has more of his LotGH collection:

http://www.jcaliff.net/cels/logh/loghcel.htm

Don't know whose gallery the following link goes to: I landed smack in the middle of the LotGH collection and can't find a home page ("Home" goes to a Battle Athletes gallery). But here's some more Galactic cels:

http://www.animezu.com/Anime/cels/logh01.htm

And one more RS gallery: Art in Motion: Pharna's Cel Gallery

Dude, you can go back even further than that for some great stuff.

I agree, the art may not be the best, but the stories are just simply amazing.

Rose of Versailles/ Bersaiu no Bara is a fantastic example. It's kind of a love story, but it's based on the French Revolution and it's FANTASTIC. (In my opinion). The anime is from the '70s.

There's also Galaxy Express 999, which I've heard is very good, but I've never watched it. This anime is also from the '70s (or so I've been told).

There are SOOOO many more. xD If you like morbid/psychological films, I would highly suggest watching Kanashimi no Belladonna. It's *sort of* an anime that is about the Devil and people during the times of the Black Plague. The animation *or lack thereof* is interesting, to say the least. The art is not quite anime-based though. But the movie is great. You can find it on Youtube in it's entirity.

I love love LOVE older animes. They're my favorites~ If you like girlier shows let me know, because I can give you a suggestion or two *or ten*.

There seems to be some nice art out there from LotGH I did do I google search and I checked out a few of the non rubberslug sites before , I did come to the same conclusion as you that the new search option for rubberslug is very poor now for finding sites, I have found a few cels from dealers all seem to be for a good price, although I promisied myself only to buy guyver cels from here on out I may have to brak that promise.

Just looked up Rose of Versailles which seems interesting so I will give it a try and xXElysionsPrincessXx please feel free to suggest any animes even if they are girlier I am not afraid to say as a man I shed I tear when Yang Wen-li (from lotGH) died . Any anime with an interesting story regardless of the animation is worth watching.

Rose of Versailles will probably make you tear up if nothing else. Don't let anyone spoil it for you! :P The beginning is kind of dull (like almost all animes), but it picks up sooner or later!

I would also suggest READING Candy Candy. The anime isn't really like the manga, but I suppose it's still good. It's iconic and was extremely popular in Italy and France. It sounds typical, but it's the first manga I know of that took a swing at that type of story, and it's very well written (and slightly addicting xD).

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a fantastic series. If you're looking for something similar, then Crest/Banner of the Stars is the closest thing i've seen, though it doesn't have anywhere near enough episodes to do the huge scope of the story and large cast justice (and ends inconclusively, badly in need of several more seasons).

You might also like Irresponsible Captain Tylor which, like LOTGH, also delves into some outer space politics. I'm personally not a fan of the series, as it seemed to me like an awkward mix of serious bits and comedy scenes, with a not very sympathetic main character. I think Martian Successor Nadesico did a better job of acomplishing a similar premise.

Beyond those you could check out anything by Leiji Matsumoto, such as Starblazers, Galaxy express, Galaxy Railways or Captain Harlock, which all have the basic space opera backdrop, though regrettably none of these have anywhere near the story complexity of LOTGH.

Hey Sparta101, I’m glad you’re still around. I was afraid you’d left and I was the only Guyver fan here.

I have some Legend of the Galactic Heroes artwork, but I still have to finish writing a section description before I upload it to my gallery. Even though the animation was pretty bad (whenever a character walked down a flight of stairs, I cringed), Naoyuki Onda’s character designs are beautiful.

I can’t think of another anime with LoGH’s political complexity ( Wings Of Honneamise is as rich and complex, but it‘s only one movie so it can‘t cover as much, Ginga Sengoku Gunyuuden Rai is as multi-factioned, but it’s unrealistic, and simplified for younger audiences) but there are too many great Anime from the 1980s and 90s for me to make a “best list” ( That‘s what my gallery‘s for*wink*). Here’s a few of them:

Arcadia of My Youth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=983Jy-kYOf0)
Great manly sci-fi space opera retelling of the aftermath of war…told from the side of the defeated, but unbowed!

Area 88 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFanGEsKDO0)
A man slowly awakening to his own inner destructive nature, and loosing his identity to the horror of combat.

Arion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGWh2zs_Mqg)
A re-imagined epic myth of Greco Roman Gods and Man.

Armored Trooper Votoms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgjAJx3Asno)
Gritty, sci-fi adventure of an embattled warrior traversing the galaxy to find answers …and a mysterious woman.

A Wind Named Amnesia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZk-HX3l3uI)
Is Man deeper and nobler than the restraints society puts on him; or is he an animal only seeking to fulfill his own self-interests?

Blood Reign: Curse of the Undead Yoma (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr_tqkUUPs4)
A haunting horror story of a ninja who must hunt down his closest friend - who has thrown off his humanity and become a demon.

Blue Comet SPT Layzner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2ePFZjzSUg)
A man, half- human, half-alien, must sacrifice the only life he has know in order to do what is right and protect those who at first see him as an enemy.

City Hunter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-3z3H351To)
A long running fun “private eye” type adventure series with endearing characters.

Cyber City Oedo 808 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Sqe8pHJVSU)
Badass, sci-fi anime noir action from Yoshiaki Kawajiri.**WARNING: Great, old, profanity filled MANGA UK dub!**

Dagger of Kamui (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPIehMfehxw)
A large scale adventure with a story then descends into the ridiculous, but that features some of the coolest and most imaginative fight sequences in Anime.

Demon City Shinjuku (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_LQ3vINzeg)
Horror adventure with a cocky hero, gruesome monsters, and creepy atmosphere.

Dirty Pair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmkTBIo8VCI)
Fast paced, fun loving adventures featuring a battling pair of bodacious babes.

8-Man After (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq8gK7cfU7s)
A smart mouthed, tough guy private eye is brought back as a cyborg to take out the scumbags of the future.

Five Star Stories (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppdSk-11yIY)
One of the most complex, though pretty silly sounding and not very realistic, sci-fi manga, made into an amazingly beautiful Anime movie.

Go Shogun: Time Etranger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TpYSdb7h78)
A one shot OVA sequel in a completely different tone from it’s origin giant robot series. A woman in a coma on the brink of death looks back on her own choices in life through a dream.

Grey: Digital Target (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_7YbTcyqAA)
The future is a computer controlled, coin-op game of death; where one must sacrifice their humanity and kill in order to survive and get ahead.

Gundam 0080 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tdDrLfNnjM)
The lives of the young, the old, the guilty, and the innocent are all affected by the hideous glamour, allure, and unthinking, traumatizing insanity of war.

Gunsmith Cats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMBDFo8Xtco)
Fast paced action anime with guns, grenades, cocky dialog, and classic muscle cars.

Heroic Legend of Arslan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oxvzU0AYBs)
A beautiful fantasy epic that feels more like historical drama than RPG, of warriors, maidens, and kings.

Neo-Tokyo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9wLTSgfNOA)
Three dark, stylish, and visually stunning shorts.

Patlabor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Adno8sRTono)
A very humanizing look at giant robot anime. Though the protagonists pilot giant robots, they still have to deal with all the headaches of normal everyday life … including really bad traffic jams.

Riding Bean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9cDV7ZM-Cc)
A badass macho man, a cool car, and really great chase scenes.

Silent Mobius the Motion Picture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GU8mhuU0I0)
Futuristic witches taking on slime covered monsters in slick cyberpunk style.

Sol Bianca OVA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wj8R50_Aow)
Light hearted action adventure of girls with guns kicking ass.

Space Runaway Ideon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSPgn8R6nIM)
Apocalyptic, Kill ‘em All Tomino‘s at his most pure form! Mankind’s pride, arrogance, and narrow mindedness is writ large as a sprawling sci-fi epic.

Tekkaman Blade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wfsi64RBro8)
A revamped classic 1970s Tatsunoko Hero Cartoon. An angsty hero must fight his own brainwashed family in order to save Earth.

They Were 11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n8YebEXp3c)
A group of students must rely on one another in order to survive, even though at any moment they believe one of them will betray the rest.

Thunder Jet / Ginga Sengoku Gunyuuden Rai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE_oCVa1dx8)
Giant , sprawling, epic chronicle of one grunt soldier’s rise to become ruler of the galaxy.

Venus Wars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXY1Otlu0NY)
Young biker punks take on the military establishment. Sci-fi setting; realistic political climate.

Wings of Honneamise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8-aCylTZi8)
Man’s shortcomings, search for purpose, and his striving to attain something greater than himself.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes? What's that? :D I see sensei linked my gallery above. (Btw, I'm a girl) I've been collecting LoGH for many, many years. it's my favorite series, bar none.

If you have't watched the gaiden stories, there's something else you can pick up now.

Hector the Collector loved these things with all his soul,
Loved them more than shining diamonds, loved them more than glistenin' gold.
Hector called to all the people,"Come and share my treasure trunk!"
And all the silly sightless people came and looked...and called it junk.

Thank you for checking out my site. Sorry I don’t have any LoGH cels posted. I still have to finish watching the gaiden OVAs, and I have some other series I’m working on scanning first. I’ll try to post them soon, but Jcaliff is goddess of LoGH cels. :bow

My videos are playing choppy since Photobucket switched to MP4s but, yeah, Jushin Liger is a fun show for us fans of Bio-Armour (and I really like the character designs of Yorihisa Uchida)! Though Ken Taiga is younger, pervyer, and altogether a lot more “Go Nagai-ishâ€

I'll preech for my own church but what about post-apocalyptic ?

Why don't make a try on Fist of the North Star movie... A ruined land where kung-fu masters have to survive and perpetuate a 2000 years old martial art.
Made in 1986 but still valuable even 25 years after, a classic (warning, violence +17).

Trailer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48uihdybXwY

Available in english, fully remastered, including japanese voices.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but FOTNS movie was the very first anime release in the USA on VHS ? (I heard a lot about this rumor but I need to cross sources to confirm).

Voltron and Robotech had a VHS release as long ago as 1985 i think.

There's an advertisement page for Sony's Voltron VHS (and Betamax!) in this march 9th 1985 copy of Billboard (scroll down to find it): http://books.google.nl/books?id=riQEAAA ... &q&f=false
