Other animations

Post by D123 »

I was thinking about it and I only really know of animated movies/series from the U.S and Japan, what are other good animations from other countries?

Here in the Netherlands we had a few popular "tekenfilmseries" in the early nineties like Alfred Jodocus Kwak, but it seems they were made in Japan as well... I don't think I know any animation made in Europe.

Off the top of my head, France has a few good films/series: Persepolis, The Triplets of Belleville, and The Adventures of Tintin. I do not know if all the production work is done there, but I believe they are are considered French animation. But I could be wrong, it is Monday....... :coffee:

Wasn't "Totally Spies" & "W.I.T.C.H" animated in France? I think there were a few other French productions in the 2000s that were dubbed over for the US audience and aired on CN. I think Nick & Cartoon Network aired several non-US animate series over the course of the last 30 years - there was Danger Mouse in the 1980s (love that show..), a Saban retelling of Grimm's Brothers Fairy Tales from Japan and a cartoon with koalas in it from Australia.

(Why Australia couldn't have kept releasing the cute koala shows and instead tried to force those Bananas in Pyjamas on the US is beyond me...)

It's interesting that there's not that many animations outside of the U.S and Japan but I guess I'm not that surprised

Noozles aka ふしぎなコアラ ブリンキー, Fushigi na Koara Burinkī or "Blinky, the Uncanny Koala") was set in Australia and its mystical parallel world Koalawallaland, but it was made by Nippon Animation Company.

Adventures of the Little Koala (コアラボーイコッキィ, Koara Bōi Kokki) was made by Top Craft by a bunch of animators moonlighting from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, then in simultaneous production by the same studio. (Top Craft also did The Last Unicorn.)

Both were made at the height of a Japanese "koala mania" caused by Australia's donation of seven of the animals to a zoo. These were the first such animals ever to enter the country, and, like a previous "panda-mania" (which occasioned the early Miyazaki Panda Kopanda films) it caused a quite a media and merchandising flap.

Both ran on Nickelodeon in a daytime cartoon series for young audiences during the late 80s, and I used to be able to sing the Saban International theme song for "Little Koala."

About France, here are local products that were co-financed by the Ministry of Culture (France Animation studio). Story is that in the end 70s, with the multiplication of broadcasting channels, broadcasters were looking for content for kids at a good price. Japanese animation industry aged 15 since B&W Astro Boy got a production line able to sell 4 times cheaper a minute of animation than European almost non existing competitors (except some like Procidis studio). A decade later France started to sell its own animation products.

Here are some local TV from "France Animation" studio:

- Les Mondes Engloutis (Spartakus and the sun beneath the sea - original story)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw5y7Jspju8 (original french dub)

- Rahan (comic based)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGQrbqgfMiM - opening credits KICKS ASS! :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N12EW1HYyWI (ep #1 original french dub)

Here are some local TV products from "Procidis" studio:
(note that founder and filmaker rested at almost 90y.o. and made a documentary about traditionnal cel/sketch animation)

"Once upon a time... men": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNURUGCOQ5I
(you'll notice a logo looking like a Teddy Bear, that is a stop motion animation "Colargol" that created the studio in early 70s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xq_TwxNr_qI)
"Once upon a time... space": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ditBX_WD3js
""Once upon a time... life": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrBQii4P3vc

Being native of french/german border, spending about 20 years there, I do also have german references like Pumpernickle and from Czech studio doing stop-motion and animation such as "Krtek the little mole". Will search for links.

I love the results this topic is producing thanks so far everybody

I thought I would contribute to my own thread, in the back of my mind I always remembered this one cartoon I had seen when I was little so I finally decided to try and look it up and found it. It appears it was a film animated in the UK too!

Probably my first posting unrelated with cel sales but I just want to share this. I hope it counts as animation. I would love to get some artwork from this if it is available.
