Trying to ID 2 movies (?)/series (?) from my childhood

Saw these 2 when when I was quite young so I don’t remember very many details. Here's what still sticks:

1) In the beginning a character who is a fighter pilot puts his rifle into his biplane and then takes off. He isn’t the lead though and something happens to him later on. Unfortunately this is all I really have to go on. It isn’t Porco Russo as I saw this some time in the mid-late ‘80s.

2) There is 1 female lead torn between 2 male leads, each symbolized by a different colored rose. At one point both male leads are shown juxtaposed with the roses of their respective colors (white and red I think).

I apologize for the very sketchy details, but I was less than 10 at the time and likely saw the above only once.

Can you give is a time estimated? When did you watched this?

Saw both around the mid to late '80s. I suspect that #2 could be from the '70s even but that is pure guesswork although I'm pretty sure it was anime. Definitely not Disney for either one!

I was living in Malaysia at the time but I believe they were dubbed in English.
