Sad and wistful anime songs

Post by Keropi »

They're having a sad and wistful anime song discussion on Crunchyroll. The problem is that I can't think of many sad or wistful anime songs. Can you guys think of any (especially the older songs)?

The only ones that come immediately to my mind are Video Girl closing song for sad:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90XPx_m3O-M

and the Please Save My Earth song for wistful:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YACSbe0fnE0

Can anyone think of any?

I must just forget the sad songs. :D

Well, all of the Legend of Galactic Heroes endings are sad in a way, especially the third ending. I would link to it, but it's not on youtube. The third ending has a beautiful song while Julian looks through photographs of friends in happier times. Painful to watch by the end of the third season. :(

edit: ah hah! found someone who uploaded all the endings in one big file:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeTKZNVRyHM

Specifically, here's the third ending:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeTKZNVRyHM#t=03m03s

Wistful is easier than truly sad I think, but some can be considered sad I guess. Akachan to Boku's first ending is pretty sad and sweet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOvSvxqRfJA

Ayatsuri Sakon's ending I would call wistful:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_MsqulrNCo

Ending of Ginga Sengoku Gunyuuden Rai
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqrZuJJE88U

Metropolis There'll Never Be Goodbye:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBiW2MZTbfY

Forever Love from X the Movie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzvwkdGlk28

Not a fan of Technolyze, but the end credits song always felt pretty sad to me
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMM_25fgBJA

Windaria's Beautiful Planet is wistful imho
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ykcd-vZfQM

And Voices from Macross Plus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tud4JUiPDRk

edit: just thought of another good one. Nyaasu no Uta from Pokemon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOWj9ESpA2U

Also maybe Kaze to Isshoni (ending of the Japanese version of first Pokemon movie), not entirely sad, but I think qualifies as wistful
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1JLTqKJHcI

Oh, and the most cheerful Maison Ikkoku opening ever:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKtZ6WuqJ8U

You could probably also include some of the other Maison Ikkoku endings like Ashita Hareruka and Fantasy.

gah, I'm depressing myself. No more looking for sad anime stuff for today.

Hector the Collector loved these things with all his soul,
Loved them more than shining diamonds, loved them more than glistenin' gold.
Hector called to all the people,"Come and share my treasure trunk!"
And all the silly sightless people came and looked...and called it junk.

Here's the only one i can think of now:

Full Moon wo Sagashite 3rd Ending song: "Eternal Snow"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSSkpD0IjTk

It's ussually difficult for me to recognize these songs because i almost never care about song lyrics. However, in this case, this ending started playing in some of the saddest episodes of the series so i had curiosity to know what the ending was saying.....

Those are nice songs. They make me feel sad especially the X movie song since I seen that one and I know the context well.

I had forgotten about the Macross Plus song. That's a sad one when you know what's going to happen later on in the anime. :(

Thanks for the links!

Some day I will watch more of Full Moon. It'd probably be a long time from now though. :|

I love the wistful song that is the first ending to "Maeterlinck's Blue Bird," which I uncovered only by getting a DVD set on YHJ, then an all-region player from my daughter for Christmas. Unfortunately, I can only track down the title and lyrics for the second ending. Still, it's one of many unseen delights in this series, which I'm watching through in raw Japanese.

I'm a sucker for sad songs... Here you go.

5cm per second had a pretty but very sad song "One more time, one more chance"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcRlGlu199o

Galaxy Railways - one of my all time favorites but I can't find any that is subbed or translated. I do have the translation though somewhere.

And of course a bunch of hakuouki songs are sad in order of my favorites

Good songs. I like the Hakuouki songs in the order you listed them.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the School Days ending song too. I think they only played that at the very end of the anime right? Guess that's why I forgot it. :D

The ending song to Mononoke; as in the medicine seller not the Ghibli movie lol.
(cant find it on youtube :P )

Oh and the opening to Elfen Lied (NSFW)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl4zXuMeT6g

Hmm cant think of any others off the top of my head that haven't already been mentioned.

It's not terribly old, but the ending to Utawarerumono is a longing kind of tune, I think.

This is the big one that was the first I thought of..... I swear this bizarre song is one of my favorites ever. It took me almost a decade to find this long out of print CD after first hearing the song. Thank heavens for Yahoo Japan.

Good links! I've listened to all of them. Very good songs.

I feel a particular affinity for three of them. The Elfen Lied OP always makes me feel so melancholic when I see it. I've replayed the Trinity Blood ED song so many times over the years. It was great to hear Lonely Soldier Boy. I think It's been over twenty years since I last heard it. Makes me feel quite nostalgic hearing it again.

That first Asura Cryin' first ED song was rather wistful. Maybe that's one reason I liked it:
