what type of stuff do you prefer to collect from (and why)
I was just wondering how people felt when collecting from CG shows. I have observed that most seem to prefer sketches, but what about other stuff such as production backgrounds, setti, storyboards, fan art or post production cels.
What order by preference would you place them. I realize that specifics such as the quality and rarity of the piece play a big part, but I'm talking just in general.
I tend to be a little against the gain in that I really like to see color and to be able to see the item in the finished product and so I tend to prefer backgrounds. I would put sketches second, since they do include the characters that are at the heart of the shows and you can still see them (to a decree) in the finished product. After that the order would be setti, storyboards, original fan art, post production cels and then screen capture-type fan art.
I don't mean this to be a debate about which is better since they all have their own appeal. I was wondering how everyone else felt and why.

I put genga, layouts and backgrounds about even and first. Both of course depend on art, scene, and so forth. I really like how backgrounds are actually on screen. However, I feel often genga and layouts more capture the scene while maintaining their own art quality. However, even in some non-CG series, I still want some backgrounds that don't have cels because of what they represent, their beauty, the scene, and what not.
Roughs and douga came afterwards. Most 'roughs' I've seen are quite vague, but if they're good quality, they probably run into the first paragraph. Douga from CG series seems rather undetailed... my favorite douga come from cel series. I do love them for the scene and have a few from the scene, but generally I'll take the genga over them. Now, there are some instances where what I see on screen I find more beautiful than the genga, but they're more rare.
The settei and the conte come after that because they're photocopies but are both interesting and sometimes come with fun corrections. If I could get my hands on the originals, I would love the settei though, probably up with the genga. The conte is hit and miss, for TV series often sloppy but well, the Ghibli ones are just unbelievably gorgeous. I find the settei so interesting though and often buy artbooks if they have them.

My order of preferences:
#1 - Original water color paintings from the creator or director of the series (preferably signed). I think these would probably hold the most value since they are made by the most important people of the Anime, you know who they are since they signed them, and they have color in them.
#2 - Gengas and layouts. This really depends on the quality more than anything. If they have nice quality and are full sketches, then they would probably be #1 on the list.
#3 - Dougas. This also depends on the quality, the scene it came from, and if it is a full sketch.
#4 - Original backgrounds and roughs. Backgrounds I am not too particularly interested in since you can't display it with the sketches. Roughs tend to be too "rough" for my taste.
#5 - Settei. Most of the ones I have seen are copies and I would never feel comfortable buying copies. If they were actual drawings, then it would probably rate #1 or 2 on the list.
#6 - Storyboards. I hate storyboards. 'Nuff said.

1. gengas and dougas -- I kinda lump them together. It's all the sketch work leading up to cels but since it's cg . . .
2. storyboards -- I've really gotten into storyboards recently. They probably will become my number one choice in the near future. The most amazing thing I did recently was watch an episode of WKG that I had the storyboard for. It was so cool to follow along.
3. post production cels -- I love the color, the fact that there's only one and that the artists take only the best shots. But then again, what I want a shot of, they might not have or it's three times as hard to get because there's only one.
Backgrounds and setti -- I don't even bother with.

For me I'd say:
1. Genga
2. Douga
3. Production backgrounds
4. Post production cels - I haven't seen too many that I've liked however. Most of the poses I've seen are rather generic scenes of characters staring out. ^_^; If I seen one I liked though I wouldn't mind buying one.
5. Settei (copies) - I have some interest in these, but not a lot.
6. Roughs
7. Storyboards - an original one would move it up to number 4.
8. Fan art - I have very little interest in them. But I won't rule ever buying one.

From CG shows, my list would be in this order of priority:
1. layout/background sets - I really like the idea of having at least something that was up on the screen.
2. genga/douga - The next best thing to the cel. I used to be against them, but have recently warmed up to genga/douga a LOT.
3. Rilezu cels - I actually used to be a little against these, but now that i have a few and can actually see the quality, i know i'll be buying more in the future... they're beautiful. I just wish they'd do more rilezus that weren't necessarily such close up shots. There are a few shots I'd definitely buy, but I know the character image in the shot is too small for them to ever bother with it.
4. Rough Drawings... they'd have to have at least some level of detail...
5. Settai/Storyboards - if they were originals... i'd probably move them up a spot to #4... but I am completely uninterested in copied materials. The same goes for douga/genga copies... for there to be copies... the originals must be out there somewhere, and I'd rather wait for something i know i'm going to like, rather than something I know i'd regret buying later. e_e
6. Fancels/Fanart - I'd never buy them, simply because if I really wanted one, i'd do it myself. ^_^;
The only thing i can think of that would be better than ALL of these things, if they actually started doing it (yeah right) is having a rilezu cel with a matching production background.
that would be awesomeness. ^^

My order of priority has wound up to be:
1) Layout/Backgrounds - Mmm... colour ^^;, I LOVE backgrounds... and I've been spoilt with awesome hand painted PoT BGs...
2) Settei/Storyboard - don't have one, can never afford ones that I want >_>, but I think it would be a REALLY neat thing to own.
3) Genga/Douga - I have no explination why I don't really like the idea of 26 sheets of paper from a sequence... it's just not something high on my priority list. I'd rather have the pretty colour in the background.
4) Fancel - If I want one ^^; I'll make it myself.
5) Rilezu - Just... not the same for me...

no particular order:
1. genga/douga - technically i try to get the genga or douga that is only 1 sketch(7-10 at most for sets). not to thrilled about have 30 somthing genga. the only way i'll buy a set if it's from a series i really like.
2.setti/background - dont care too much for these.
3. reproduction - i know most dont like reproductions but i dont mind them. i only collect reproduction if their from series that dont do the actual cels, which is any cg show now days.
4.rilezu(post production) cels: now these i dont mind having either. just hard finding the damn things.
5. fancels: only if the person can actually draw the character and draw them exceptionally well. which means i'm screwed if i ever do a fancel.

Although I have not yet collected CG art/creative material, this is the order I would collect:
1. Original storyboards. These contain the creative heart and soul of the series as well as being unique creative content.
2. Layouts and background sets
3. Douga/Genga - only specific shots or scenes where the character designer or key animators have drawn the sequences.

Original artwork
from creator or head animator or designer
2. dougas and gengas
3. original backgrounds
4. Repro cels released from the studio
5. settei
6. storyboard copies
I dont even bother looking at fan cels. I guess its a combination of "its not authentic so who cares
" and if i wanted one I can make my own , just as good or better than the ones I've seen out on ebay which are kinda awful
LOL!

I'm not typically much of a "sketch" person ... so I can't see myself (at least at this moment) collecting from a lot of CG shows. But, with that said, there are some that I love enough to overlook my bias against the lack of color found in sketches. Saiyuki, Weiss Kreuz Gluhen, and Full Metal Panic come to mind immediately, although I'm sure there are others, should I stop and think about it. Anyhow, here are my preferences, in the instances when I do collect from CG:
1. Rilezu cels ... I realize I'm probably the only strange bird out here who would prefer a post-production cel as their first choice. But ... I just like them best ... they look like a cel ... feel like a cel ... smell like a cel ... taste like a cel (oh ... wait... that's not right ... eating cels would just be strange ...
)
2. Genga/Douga .... I lump these all together. Usually, I can't afford rilezu cels, so I search out sketches of my favorite characters. (Although I've had absolutely no luck with WKG sketches ... grrr.
)
3. Original artwork from the creator/head animator/designer ... but only if it's of the character/characters I love.
4. Everything else ... I don't really have much of an interest in storyboards, since they just don't make sense to me when I look at them (um ... does that mean I'm anime-challenged...?
). Original backgrounds don't interest me all that much, other than as something to put behind my cels ... although, I have to admit to seeing some bks lately that would have been fabulous stand-alone pieces ... so, my disinterest in backgrounds could change. And, as for settei ... I like them OK. I have one set, from Inu Yasha, which was a gift from a friend ... and it's really neat, especially seeing the different designs together like that and the corrections on the sheets ... but they just don't ring my bell b/c they're copies. I would much prefer something that's original.

Hmmmm, for me i guess this is my list. First i would like to state that anything orginally drawn excites me more than photcopies., yet that wont stop me from collecting a few of them.
1. Definitely shetches, be the douga, genga, roughs, whatever, if its drawn by the staff than im exited. Yet the same item in photocopy format id put at the bottom of the list. Go figure.
2. Storyboards, i love the proceess of actually seeing the series unfold. Its even neater to watch the series as youflip through one. And if you have two of the same episode but at different versions you can see the continuity changes. I think what we watch could have been a bit different is kinda cool.
3. scripts. I just like seeing the dialog, just wish i could read it.
4. settei, the photocopied drawing of the characters just dont excite me as much as the others. go figure, even though they command a higher price than a storyboard or script.
5. Repro cels. But havent seen any yet for the ones i like.
6. photocopies of sketches, ect.
thats my list
i know pretty boring and weird.
Oh, and i like the taste of cels.

#1. Layout, roughs, genga (original setti, storyboards), artist watercolor: From non-cel shows I really feel that the layouts captures the scene best, and I just like the rough sketchy quality to the roughs and genga more than of the clean lines of douga. Original setti and storyboard I would jump on in a heartbeat (if I can afford them), but I don't ever buy the copies. Artist watercolor I would WUV to have if I can afford them (even though they're not production art).
#2. Douga, backgrounds: It really depend on the scene and if I like them well enough. I rarely go out and buy a set of just douga or backgrounds. If the background comes with a layout sheet then it goes up to #1.
#3. Setti, Storyboards: Since most of what we see are copies I really wouldn't buy those, even though they are from one of my favorite shows. Originals see #1.
#4 . Fan cels, rilezu, repro cels: I don't buy these at all. Fan cels I can make if I really wanted to. I just don't see the appeal of non-production cels.
(Although there is a certain repro cel I wouldn't mind owning if it wasn't so expensive, and I once tried to buy a rilezu but was saved by someone who ordered it first
)

I would order them...
1. Genga
2. Douga
3. Post production cels (I'm not really into these as much, but at least you get COLOR this way!)
4. Roughs
5. Settei and backgrounds
6. Fan art - but only if really amazing.
It's tough and generally I make these decisions on an item-by-item basis...
P.S. - thanks Momo for digging up some of these older threads! They're so much fun to read through again!!!!

My choices are affected by: oooo lookit the pretty bishies!!!
So, color is a big priority. But, having said that, I do own some genga/douga/layouts. I mean, I still drool over my Gojyo opening genga every day, and he's monotone! ...but what a tone!!!
1. Rilezu! I wub em! Just wish I had the money to buy all the ones I really want!!! I'd have at least five each Samurai Deeper Kyo and Mirage of Blaze ones!!! And several DNAngel ones that have already sold and disappeared into the ether... Maybe a couple Weiss Kreuz ones... Oh, and there's this one Full Metal Panic one....
2. Genga because they typically have shading that fills out the characters a bit more
3. Douga if no genga
5. Never got a setting until recently of BLEACH (not in my hands yet). It has shading instructions, and is the only ding darn thing I've been able to find from the show! (except for the life sized cardboard cutout... grumble grumble... okay enough about that..!)
4. Fan art! Well, I know of one person that does fan art that just knocks my socks off! Uende!!! Her bishies are just so gorgeous! I can't resist!!! Must.... hold.... bishie...!!! Heck, I don't even like Goku as lust candy, but her version makes me a droolin' fool!
This would be on a piece-by-piece basis. I have a couple other fan cels, one because I liked it and couldn't afford a decent Aya cel otherwise. And the other was just a brain fart when I was still a newbie on YJ, and couldn't read 'member cel' as fan art.
But it's cute, and nice to look at too! (and was cheap!) (shoulda been the first clue...)
