Could anyone recommend some new anime/manga series?

Post by naria »

I'm looking for any new anime series to watch or manga to read. I seem to go for more of the shoujo style. Some that I've seen/watching are Fruits Basket, Chobits, Kare Kano, Ayashi no Ceres, Fushigi Yuugi, etc...If anyone has some recommendations for me, please post them here. Thanks!

For shoujo, and some action, I recommend:

Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Arjuna
Magic Knight Rayearth
Sakura Wars
Oh My Goddess
Devil Hunter Yoko
Please Teacher
Full Metal Panic

Was Arjuna shounen or shoujo? I really have no idea on that one.

I don't watch that much shoujo anime, but I did like D.N.Angel a lot. :D

Zettai Kereshi manga.... I can liken it to being a Chobits type series but for girls, which is even better, LOL... Lot's of nice eye candy if you like Watase Yuu's art.
I also suggest:
Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge manga and . If you enjoy Comedy I highly recommend : Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge.

I would say it's both. But because the main character is female, and the story is seen through her eyes, I would say Arjuna LEANS towards shoujo. Though there's nothing 'girlie' about the anime. It's worth a watch.

Thanks for all the responses/suggestions. I will definitely start checking around for them. I had been wanting to check out D.N.Angel. Oh, and has anyone read Watase Yuu's newest one released by Viz, Imadoki? Thanks again, everyone! :)

This reply is a bit late but....

Anime:
Utena (I suggest seeing the series before the movie), Oh My Goddess, Rayearth, and Please/Onegai Teacher like ES mentioned. Ai Yori Aoshi and Love Hina are a little more on the Shounen side (I think), but I still like them a lot. Escaflowne is a mix of a lot of things and very good.

Manga:
Love Hina, Oh My Goddess, and Utena... mentioned above as anime and this time as manga. The first two are better as manga, I think, and the Utena manga is quite different from the anime. Other manga series....

Hana-Kimi
Hot Gimmick
Peach Girl
Mars
Sensual Phrase (I've not read this one but a very good friend of mine loves it to death)
Maison Ikkoku (Rumiko Takahashi but this series actually has an ending, unlike some of her other work... grrrrr)
Descendents of Darkness (I think that's the American name, Yami no Matsuei... only read if you don't mind yaoi)
British, you see, useless. I cannot get the equipment.

Last EXILE is good, its sort of like Escaflowne where it has elements of both shoujo and shonen but is great overall. It also is a straight storyline for 26 episodes or so.

I have only read one manga, so it's the only one I can suggest, it's Pet Shop of Horrors. It has 7 manga so far (if that makes sense), and I absolutely love the stories. It's good for someone like me who seems to have a short attention span lately :P

I'm glad this got posted because I am also looking for some new manga to read.

Ohh I only talked about anime but manga is another story! Sorry if I'm repeating some stuff already mentioned also!
Titles: (these are all available in the US)
Hot Gimmick
Blade of the Immortal (gorgeous art and story but more serious)
Legend of Basara or just Basara (there was a lame half assed anime made off of this epic before the manga had finished I think)
Imadoki (Yuu Watase)
Peach Girl
Naruto
Alichino (If you're looking for just gorgeous art)
Paradise Kiss
Please Save My Earth
RuRouni Kenshin
I.N.V.U.
Marmalade Boy (beware the goodie-goodie, sugary factor)
Hana Yori Dango
Tramps Like Us
Naussica
You'd probably like Clamp's titles a lot and they've been releasing a ton of clamp stuff but I haven't read most of it. (Cardcaptor Sakura, X/1999, Wish, Clover, Chobits, etc)

Titles: (not yet licensed in the US and done by scanslation groups)
Love Monster
Zettai Kareshi & Fushigi Yuugi Genbu (Yuu Watase)
Parfait Tic
Gung

However, Love Hina is NOT shoujo. Nor, for that matter, is Oh My Goddess, which was listed earlier in the thread. ^^; Just because it has a romantic story doesn't make it shoujo!

I know it's not the correct definition, but I always think of shoujo as an anime/manga that lots of girls like. I know plenty of girls that like Oh! My Goddess, but less that like Love Hina. Since it came up, does anyone know what exactly makes a series shoujo or shounen? There are some shows that appeal to both boys and girls... do they get labeled one or the other based on the author's gender? Which magazine they run in? The main character's gender? Number of panty shots? Number of shirtless guys?

I would say they are labeled by which magazine they run in. If they are running in shonenn magazine, like JUMP, then they are shounenn namga. If they are running in a shoujo magazine, then they are shoujo manga.
