Optional Categories

Post by ReiTheJelly »

For many years in the Cel Awards, the optional categories were Hentai, Animated and Settei.
A quick browse of Rubberslug shows that many gallery curators now own original, hand-drawn settei.

How do people feel about removing Settei from the list of optional categories, for the 2010 Sketch Awards Contest?
Settei would then be a regular-entry category.

A couple of people have messaged me about adding Storyboards as a category, since it was attempted last year. A quick over-view of Rubberslug shows that the number of folks owning original, hand-drawn storyboards is few in number. Should Storyboard replace Settei as an optional category?

I'd rather not make this a poll, since we have polls galore. :) So if folks could just post their opinions on the above matters, I'd be much obliged.

For reference, here are a few examples of hand-drawn settei:

Is there a limit to the number of optional categories? :?

The reason I ask is because proportionally, I'm not sure how many people have original settei that they would choose to enter over another piece of production artwork in a regular category. As an optional category in past awards, the settei category has not exactly had an over-abundance of entries, and that's when people are allowed to enter that category in addition to their 5 regular categories.

Settei entries for the past 2 years (since the Settei category has only been around for 2 years of awards):
2008 awards -- paper and plastic entries: 10
2009 sketch awards - paper only: 8
2009 cel awards - plastic: 5

Just some food for thought. I'm not opposed to adding Storyboard as an optional category regardless of what happens to the Settei category. ;)

I don't think that there are enough people with original storyboards around. And by original, I mean, no xerox copied storyboards with 'original' pencil markings on them.

Speaking of which, the sketch awards needs to address that issue, the definition of an 'original' sketch. Last year, there appeared to be a few entrants that had a xeroxed copy as a base, and then, because there were some original colored pencil lines, defined it as original. We didn't make a stink out of it because the rules did not state that xeroxed copied artwork with original pencil lines did not qualify as 'original' artwork.

Anywho...I think that there are more people who have original settei, but I still think the numbers are low. Even as an optional category, I believe that there were only 8 or so entrants in the sketch awards last year. I imagine that the number would be half that if it were made into a standard category.
