Wacky YJ Auction Items

Post by sensei »

This seems to deserve a thread of its own. It's well known that any given anime episode will require the painting of something like 3000-6000 cels. (A rough guesstimate based on a norm of ca. 300 cuts and an average of 10-20 cels per cut, with some cuts requiring much more and others only an A1 tome cel.)

Of these, maybe a tenth will be collectable, with the rest being partial layers, grass blowing, elbows, passing cars, etc. (I have a big box of such cels in my closet, thanks to a foolish purchase I made a couple of years ago.)

With the obviously desirable cels now getting into collectors' hands, it's interesting to see some sellers starting to push the curve of what is remotely worth owning. This thread is dedicated to those oddballs that we all see from time to time.

I'll start with this one:

http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d103508913

Here's a chance for a noob collector to get a cel of not one but four of the famous and desirable "battle costumes" from Cardcaptor Sakura. One is a great rarity and the others are also very handsomely represented. The backside of the deal is ... er ... well ...

The embarrassing thing is that I know exactly where this cel appears within the CCS canon of 70 TV episodes, 2 movies, and 3 omake shorts!

Here's one. I saved this one from two years ago because I thought it looked so odd:

I had this in my "Bad Hair Cels" folder.

Anyone want to pay 4500 yen for it?

I have to post here with something that's sort of ironic, considering the auction sensei linked :emb. I actually actively sought out a rather oddball backside shot of my favorite character on purpose! *nervous laugh*

Say hello to... The Butt (tm)

I love wacky YJ auctions like these, but sometimes I think they're funny enough to actually want to own them :rollin. (Hence why I own the above-linked cel). :dsmoke

And sensei -- don't worry, I knew exactly where the above cel was located in the 49 episode + oav GW TV series, too. :dgrin It's always amusing the things we remember, isn't it? Heh heh heh. :D

Thanks, Caroline. I actually like the padded case the camera comes in! Wait a while, and Polaroid will become retro!

Keropi, I puzzled over that cel for a while, and finally realized that the hair somehow had shifted from the sides to the front in a way that would be anatomically difficult. And what's happened to her forehead. Whoever she is, she'd better have a valid Planet Earth birth certificate.

Here's another:

http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d88623232

Again, I know exactly who it is, where it appears, and why it's significant, and I could actually see myself owning it. Just not at a starting bid of 9800 yen.

As this has gone around for six months now, I think even the sleazy hard-core Japanese otaku agree with me for once.

Love the save picture you have Keropi.

The cel picture that I save for future "Laughter" is still on YJ an I can't understand :topic ? I'm calling it "Action Butt plus the upside down back view of someones back" every time I come across it on YJ, /hmm I may put a bid on for the nice background an not the cel it self.

I've no idea which anime series it came from an I'm tend not to find out at all.

Pretty ... and with the bg and original layout ... wish it weren't Lent already.

Oh, well, I already have one:

Still ... the pink color means that's gotta be from the 80s series ... maybe even the 70s.

Is tempted ...

Amazing thing to see a character that is tiny, having a dip an relaxing in a bowl of water an having a eyeball for an head. I can see the little fellow having major problems if he going start wearing glasses or a contact lense. Just wondering where the idea comes from, out of the original artist explosive brain maybe.

Some legs in a hurry

Like Zerospace pointed out, sometimes you're actively searching for an oddball. A year and a half ago we won a rather expensive auction for a cel of hands from Sailor Moon that had been on our wishlist for years:

http://acetateaddiction.rubberslug.com/ ... mID=261637

If you've never seen the series you have no idea why anyone would want this cel let alone why it was so expensive. So I wonder if some of these other crazy angle and half character shots have a similar story behind them.

I also tend to like cels of just eyes and characters from behind so maybe it's just that I'm a little wacky. ;)

I found this article on CNN today.

http://www.cnngo.com/tokyo/none/enterpr ... ion-100126

For those of you who don't want to read it, the article talks about a man who's putting himself up for auction in order to get a job.

And here's the auction....currently at US$50K.

http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k128921323

Assuming that one could bid that high, I wonder how a deputy service would handle this one?

Wow. I wonder how much he'll have to pay in auction final-value fees?

Will he have to kiss the winning bidder's Rosa Mystica? That could be entertaining.
