Copy or the Real Thing?

Post by ginga123 »

Hey!

I need a lil help! :)

I LOVE these Godannar sketch sets, but I can't tell if they're original/roughs or copies of originals.

What do you think? Original sketches or copies? This will help my decision process!

Thanks for your help! It's much appreciated.[/url]

Hi.

Those are copies.

I see the words copy in the description too.

As a person who has been screwed into buying copies when it looked like the authentic stuff, I am absolutely sure. :)

Yeah, it looks like copies and the description says copies there. :)

EDIT:

So Rinkya doesn't translate the text automatically anymore? Was it using up bandwidth/cost?

Aww, my heart has been dashed! :P I was hoping those were original roughs-- pooh! :( lol I guess the seller is trying to be slick on me and recoop some funds?

Yes, i agree; i was a bit confused by the translation as well. I just noticed the Yen to Convert button was no longer on their site either. That was my favorite button-- as well as many others' too.

Thanks for your help.

Rough are often on thin yellow color sketches and as they are hard to Xerox (turn to white & black) you'll be safer on such items :D

It's true that if you have a sketch on thin yellow (or green) sketch paper, it's a rough. Or maybe a shuusei -- the rough usually is done before the genga as a guide to the key artist, and the shuusei is done afterwards as a correction ("shuusei").

But I have also seen many roughs done on white paper, particularly on layout paper, and particularly for CGI series. I tend to use the term "genzu" for these.

As Keys' Little Anime Cel FAQ explains, the term "genzu" contains the same first character as "genga" ("original" + "drawing") and adds a second character that means "plan" or "map-out." So it signifies a "thinking out loud on paper" planning drawing that could fit in anywhere during the early layout/rough/genga animation process.

The best way to spot whether a genzu is a copy or not is to look at the colors. Most genzu are done with a variety of colored pencils, where the animator very quickly outlines the pose of the character in gray, green, red, orange, yellow, or etc. Then with a graphite pencil, the artist will refine the details of the face, contours of clothing, etc. Even ones done just in graphite will show much more variation in the shading of the pencil strokes than a contrasty photocopy can reproduce.

Yeah, from the scan, those are obviously copies. But keep your eyes open, since stacks of genzu sometimes go for decently reasonable prices. I sometimes think they are the contents of an animator's circular file at the end of the day.

Really nice details.

At my side, definitively in love for "yellow" arts because coming from industrial design business I used several technics when I was a schoolar (likes those hellish stinky alcohol blueprints or micro drawings projectors) before the big turn for computer assisted tools. So maybe it is part of nostalgia to love rough arts :)
