Holiday Frenzy

Post by theultimatebrucelee »

So I bookmarked these auctions wondering how much they'd end up, and :jaw

Granted not everybody like this kind of cels, but apparently this is where the money is. And no they don't always go for nearly as much, just this week's auction. Is anyone familiar with this title? Me neither. Sometimes quite a few bidders would gang up on those more unexpected auctions.

These look like hanken cels. If so, the price makes sense as they're usually much higher quality than your standard A-1 production cel.

For a smaller, lesser known production, it doesn't sound unreasonable that the price would end so high. With hanken artwork being much rarer than a well known series, if there's two people that are fans of the show and want to own as much artwork from it as possible, that's all it takes for an auction to end this high.

No, the real money is still with the shikishi. This Yuriyuri shikishi drawn by the creator, Namori, sold on YJ for 650,000 yen on December 13. If something is popular and/or has had a long shelf life, it'll sell quite high.

That's a really nice looking shikishi there, the price tag is also quite impressive.

I was just really awed by those high bidders sense of worth. Those hankens just don't seem to me all that impressive in detail or size. Its hard to take those and their ending price and compare them with some seemingly more impressive ones and their ending price in the past, so I'm guessing those bidder's honor were on the line or something :P

Some of the earlier auctions that seems even nicer and much larger in size went for nothing in compression, when those high bidders weren't around. I wonder how much those would go for if they are listed now.

It seems like some less known items price can become quite...volatile, difference is with one or two bidders getting in or out and depending on if they stick around or not.

It could just be that the character in the particular hanken was someone's waifu. Otaku pay all sorts of crazy fees when their waifu/husbandos are involved. I remember, years ago when K-On was at the height of popularity, one of the guitars given away during a Lawson promotion, sold on YJ for about $70,000. The same can be said when official artwork has been released of a favorite pairing. When the first Madoka Magica movie was released, one of the film strip sequences of Madoka/Homura snuggling sold for $13,600.

Well, I'm reminded of the Takashi Murakami's "lonesome cowboy" statue that was auctioned off for $15 million dollars. I still remember looking at it fairly close up during an exhibition at a museum in Little Tokyo. At the time it wasn't even in a glass cabinet or anything. Even though I appreciate large scale anime figurines in general, this was something that I would not touch even if they paid me to, alas, I know nothing about true art! I wonder who ended up getting it, that would make one heck of a husbando.
