Heeeeheeehee Yeah that would be fun :D :D WHen I get drank, I really get goofier and I just crash :P :P This is why I don't drink so often (especially at meetings :P :P) but yes, for some reason everyone wants me to be drank :P :P

Hmmm. Now I have this picture in my mind of Kittens holding a sake jug over her shoulder as she draws her katana. Like a female version of Hiko, perhaps?? :P

No.. Ran. :P

(except that neither one of them is goofy...)

I don't have any problem with most people collecting cels from series they've never seen. It's artwork. You like what you like. :) But I have run across a collector who grabbed one simply because they didn't want someone else to have it. I'm not real big on that.

For myself, I don't buy from series I haven't seen. I do have some of those cels in my gallery but I received them from other means, trades, gifts, etc. The cels & sketches I collect have to mean something to me. I had a chance of buying a few Al sketches from FMA before I'd even seen the series. Glad I didn't because after watching FMA, I realized he's not a character I want to collect. Another case was I had a chance to buy a very cheap Sesshomaru cel but didn't. He was pretty, centered and closeup going for only $200. I'd only seen the first 4 episodes of IY at that point and didn't know who he was. Looking back, I wished I had grabbed it but oh well. Chances are if I would have grabbed it, I wouldn't have liked his character.

There was a Gravitation repro I had admired for a long time but never bought. I didn't want to get something and turn out not liking the show. So I broke down, watched the series and then bought the cel. I thought it was beautiful before. Now I think it's even better. So to me, I like having the connection to the artwork I collect. If I think a series looks like something I want to collect, I'll start watching it . . . ie Kenshin.

I buy whatever makes me happy. My decision is based on my happiness. If I happen to get something that someone else wanted really badly, I will hang it over them until they get really mad or at least goes away.

But if it is desired by someone I care about, then negotiations are in order and I usually still torture them for a bit before handing it over. (lol what are friends and loved ones for, except for a little mild torture :dsmoke )

I consider my cels to be art, production art to be exact. If I like a certain artwork I'll buy it(price is a factor of course). If it's a favorite series it'll probably get priority, but in the lean periods between such items, I'll take substitutes.

Is it fair that people like me deprive others of their favorites just so we can acquire an image that we respond to on an asthetic/or/emotional level? Heck, that's not the real question... I should ask is it fair that people with deeper pockets out bid me? Or how bout those people that can somehow get up earlier in the morning and catch the deals, I demand they sleep in!!! Naw, there's no leveling the playing field in this pursuit. :P

To Buy or not to buy... That is the debate

Post by JWR »

To me if it is a great cel that has gotten my interest from a series I don't know it's ok to buy. If there is someone who would want it more they could always bid on it.
I bought this cel http://Ryan.Rubberslug.com/Gallery/Inv_ ... emId=98655 that I had no idea what it was from, It just really caught my eye and I was the only bidder on YJ. Later thanks to Keropi I found out where it was from and so identified it in my gallery.

I seem to be in the small minority who believes in leaving things for the fans who will truly appreciate them. ^^;;

Only once have I ever bought a cel from a series I hadn't seen, and that was a $5 cel in the bargain bin at Katsucon. Not real high-class. Sure, there's stuff that I see that I think is pretty, but if I haven't seen the series, I'm a bit reluctant to drop money on a cel from a series that I might very well end up hating.

One cel/sketch here or there from a series you haven't seen? Fine. I have no problems with that. But when you start buying up tons of cels/sketches from a series that you've never seen, I don't think that's fair to other fans of the series. For all you know, you might just have bought someone's wishlist cel or sketch just "because it was pretty." And I don't feel that's fair at all.

Ah, but there's nothing stopping that person from contacting you to see if you'd sell to them. And maybe they'll see it in your gallery, whereas, they may not have even known it was for sale somewhere else.
Is it any different really, having a wishlist cel that someone else owns, from a very popular series, than an obscure series?
Is it any different if the person who owns your wishlist cel loves it because they love the series as much as you, or if they just love the cel for itself?
Either way, someone else owns it. What difference does it really make to the other person who is wishing for it, WHY the person who owns it loves it.
Make an offer, see if they are willing.
So they bought it before you. Big whoop. How about the tons of people in Japan who owned Inu Yasha cels before it became mainstream here in the US? Should we be mad at them for buying the cels years in advance of the interest being picked up here?

Tee hee! Does what you were about to say end with "...everyone has one" ? :rollin

I'm not sure about 'fair', and buying one or two cels from an anime you haven't seen because you think they're pretty is one thing, but I think if you buy up a bunch of cels/sketches from an anime you haven't seen and don't plan to see, and then hoard them it certainly makes you at least a little bit of a jerk.

This thread does raise the interesting question of whether or not you can trully "love" a cel/sketch without seeing the anime.

I think that in Luna's theory it would depend on whether or not those people were buying them because they were fans of Inuyasha, or because they thought they were pretty. I don't see why it becoming mainstream here would be relevant. The theoretical "true fan" could just as well be Japanese.

I can see that point, I suppose. It seems rather juveial to me.
I like Monet's Waterlilies. I think it's a pretty picture, mostly because a print of it always hung in the house I grew up in. If I had more money than god, and could afford to buy the original, would I be wrong to do so? I'm not a heavy Monet fan, I don't know everything about his life and art. I don't even particularly like ALL his art. I just like that one painting. It's for sale. I can afford it. So, does it make me a bad person, for not letting it go to someone else, who would enjoy it equally but for different reasons?
I dunno. It all just sounds like sour grapes to me. I love the Last Unicorn, but when I see people with cels in their galleries, even if it's a "Gee this looked nice, so I bought it" I usually just think, "Lucky stiff!" and move on with life.
But that's just my opinion.
Also, I have "tons of cels/ketches" from two series that are almost impossible to find. One was never released in America, and has only JUST be released on DVD for the first time since it's TV airing in the 1980's. I've seen 4 episodes, and an OVA from it, thanks to Fansubs, but they no longer produce fansubs of that series.
My other series, the new one I'm collecting "Jura Tripper" is only available in Italy and Germany so far (and japan, natch.) There are no torrents, no fansubs, not even and webpages other than listings of the OP and other songs from it. The cels themselves, are ones other people don't want. So there's none of this "true fan" crap here. People are GIVING them away to me, because I happen to like them, and they don't care about them. So.. I'm the only person showing an interest in this series, and yet, I'm a BAD FAN because I haven't seen it. Even though it's impossible to find?
Bull.
Maybe my opinion seems a bit strong to you all, but I'm tired of having people pick at me. Shut up. Stop emailing me / leaving weird feedback. You don't know any more about the cels than I do, so who made you god.
Bah humbug, growl spit, sigh.
Okay, I'm done now.

I don't believe anyone in this thread called anyone else a "bad" anything. :?

However, I have been directed to the entry in your blog entitled "Kisara and Co can kiss my ass" and I think I have a bit of a better understanding of what was going on here than I did before.

I had assumed that this was a theoretical discussion on collecting, not an attempt to justify collecting habits. X| I had no idea what cels anyone collected, what anime anyone watched, or what kind of fan anyone happend to be. I am fairly certain that the majority of people participating in this thread are as ignorant as I was as to any sort of personal reasons behind all of this.

Opinions have been given. No one said anyone else had to agree with or follow them. If you are being harrassed you should take it up with the mods. Ranting ruins otherwise interesting conversations.
