How far would you go?

Post by Drax »

As I bought a couple of Dragon Ball Z DVDs, I reminded myself what challenges I have faced to get my anime fix.

Does everyone remember when fox aired the butchered and edited version of Dragon Ball Z? Well at the end of the Freeza saga they stopped and began at the beginning again. Sure I was ticked but decided they hadn’t bought the rights and had to wait to see the conclusion. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Then it was taken out of the line up. No ending. No conclusion. No one to borrow a copy from. Well to end my story I found the Freeza saga on channel 44 Telmundo. Yes, the friendly Spanish channel was playing the entire saga at six o’clock in the morning. Did I watch it? Of course and it only took six weeks or so to get the episodes I missed. The only catch, I took German in High School not Spanish.

Well, I just watched a thirty minute long, un-subtitled pre-series episode of Hunter x Hunter (thanks so much for that Cindy!!!! :D ).

Not only did I laugh at the funny parts, but I understood about 80% of it.

No I have not mastered Japanese, I understood MAYBE 20% of what was spoken. I knew what was going on because I have the dialogue of the first few episodes memorized and this episode was almost exact. :emb

So......yeah. I know what you mean.

And if anyone wants to get on fan-subbing that episode, I REALLY wanna know what I missed. :D

Heheheh... I've been known to watch fansubs in Italian- I took Spanish in high school and college, so I got the just of everything... oddly enough. :P

I basically bought the entire DBZ series because CN was ticking me off, rerunning and rerunning the same episodes over and over and over again. I finally bought 'em all on VHS... of course, now I have to do the same thing over again for DVD....

Oh that was too funny! Funnier still 'cause I related so much.

I watched the entire last season of Yu-gi-oh unsubbed, THEN brokedown and bought the bootleg. Yes, a strange one, that I am. :P

About eight months ago I was downloading Italian dubbed episodes of One Piece because I was tired of waiting for English fansubbed episodes to come out. I not only downloaded raws and Chinese subs, but also
German and Italian dubs. It was amusing to hear the One Piece characters speaking in German since I was so used to their Japanese seiyuu, but at least I got to finish the Alabaste arc without having to wait the extra 2-3 months.

Let's see...other nutty things I've done in regards to
anime:

1. I spent $71 on a Refrain Blue VHS tape just because I thought it might contain the adult version of episode three (it didn't).

2. I spent $75 on three VCDs just because I heard the character designer of the anime was the same as the Doukyuusei/Doukyuusei 2 character designer. The animation style ended up being extremely ugly and
disturbing. X|

3. I spent about $80 (if I include the shipping) for six Pia Carrot 2 DX VHS tapes and then come to find out that English fansubs of the series were released three weeks after I bought them.

4. I spent $70 buying someone a Kakyuusei DVD because I am too lazy to mail them mine. The other reason being because I don't want to show my face at the post office for a couple of weeks because I'm waiting for my second ID to arrive in the mail and I have to present it to them.

5. A year and a half ago, I requested several raw, bad quality VHS tapes at $7 each just so that I could see if I liked the show enough to buy artwork from it or not.

6. I used to rent Japanese raw tapes a lot 3 1/2 to 6 years ago just to watch anime before the fansubbers got to the shows (or before they started them). That was a lot of fun, but expensive in the long run. I
didn't even understand much of what they were saying.
:?

7. I spent $120 on a Suika DVD R2 box set just to watch the 13 minute omake which I ended up finding a downloading 2 days later. :emb

8. I've left my computer on for 18 days in a row just so that I could finish downloading a particular obscure anime.

I used to buy the VHS tapes from Japan that were sold to the "Rental shops" just to get the higher quality tape (rugged). Have NGE Death&Rebirth, End of Evangelion, and Volume 0:0 (some sort of fan service tape for the series... never seen it fansubbed or heard of it since).

Then bought the DVD box sets (Second Impact) for NGE since I didn't think anime would come out over here on DVD. This was when Suncoast had the Anime VHS tapes next to the pr0n section and they actually had a bigger pr0n selection. The Owner of the Suncoast would laugh when I came in and finally moved the tapes away from that section since she knew I felt emarassed standing near them. >.<

Also bought the Kenshin DVDs of episodes that were faaaaar from being released on DVD just to watch them.

You don't want to know how much I've blown on that stuff.

God I love the Internet now...
