That's an easy one - Card Captor Sakura
Where else can you find a wholesome story about earnest good works, familial, personal, and selfless love, postive messages, and, of course, cute characters. There are also many other story arcs that run through the anime that deal with maturity, personal relationships, and strength of heart.
I also like DNangel, Magic Knight Rayearth, Cowboy Bebop, and Kare Kano. Kind of an eclectic mixture.

Oh gosh, we can only pick one? I have too many!! Ok, I'll try to keep the list short... ^_~
I generally like good vs. evil or "save the world" types of anime. lol Yes, they can be horribly cliche, but *shrugs* They're still my favorite themes.
Samurai Troopers has been my #1 fav for many, many years and it's still one of my favorites. I sort of categorize this series as a "fighter" type (no, not a DBZ type). You know, swords and battle armor... that sort of thing. lol I like the series mostly because of the "main" character, Ryo. He has also been my fav chara for a long time and it is he whom I take the name Rekka from. He is the type of character that would sacrifice everything of himself to help a friend. He is also very hot headed and quick to action. He's a fire elemental, so I can relate. heehee
Secondly, I really loved B't X from beginning to end; and I especially liked Neo. I can watch that OVA over and over... B't X is another "fighter" anime, charas with armors and special weapons and such... but maybe I can dub this a sort of "fighter-mech" hybrid. lol I'm totally making up these names... haha Again, I like the series mostly because of the main character Teppei. He, too, is pretty quick to action and can get into some major trouble because of it. He's like Ryo in many ways, one which deals with his kidnapped brother, whom he goes through hell itself to save. I'm not exactly a mech fan, but... the mechs in this series are really neatly designed.
Thirdly, I really enjoyed Gulkeeva, although it's a pretty obscure series from 1995. This is another classic fighter type...although it has hints of mech anime, too. This is going to sound really horrible but... I didn't really fall in love with this series until episode 25 when
Touya's a brash little kid, quick to act (see a pattern here?), but he's a wicked swordsman. There's also a sort of legend or something going on in the series...but I haven't exactly figured it out yet. ^^; Great show.
And for honorable mention, I'd like to briefly talk about the Ys II: Heaven's Sanctuary OVA. I'm a big Ys fan, always have been, so when I finally saw the 2nd OVA (I'm bad, I still have to see the first one), I was really hooked. The show, like the games, is a classic "fighter" type. If you know anything about the games, the story follows the adventures of Adol Christin, who eventually becomes a GREAT legend worldwide for his swordsmanship and heroic qualities. The world would probably descend into complete darkness if he ever went away... I like the series, once again, because of the main character. Adol kicks butt. He's one of my all-time favorite characters and...I'm really due to watch this OVA again!! I'll have to watch it tonight!
So, there's my favorites schpeil. Hope I didn't bore everybody... It just felt wrong to choose only one when I love them all so much. heehee

I can't pick one
DBZ - Favourite Character is Goku - Wht do I like.
Many reasons - History\backstory - long arc storylines - relationships between characters - values - power - fights - funny... I could go on and on
Naruto - The 2nd anime I really started to become hooked on. Favourite CHarcter is Rock Lee - again the characters in this series are great - The backstories - flashbacks - etc really (at first) help you feel for the characters.
Love the character design of Lee - Love how there are so many characters but somehow I end up really finding each story interesting.
Naruto again has some long arc stories I like... don't know why - I guess I love the build up - it makes the explosion\resolution have much more impact. don't like one episode storylines (well most anyway)
FMA - I like the mixture of darkness and comedy in this one. Sometimes I am shocked\horrified, sometimes I am laughing. Love the premise of the story itself, and love the relationship between the brothers.

I like many anime. I've enjoyed the ride most of them give. I like story driven better than flashy effects though. But the top three that have reached into my chest and hold my beating heart:
1. Trust and Betrayal (Kenshin) - the art was stunning, the story made me cry like a baby, and for two or three days after watching it for the first time, I'm still not quite sure where I was or what I was doing, I was still so caught up in the whole thing. Images before my eyes, questions and possible answers running through my head. It is just powerfull juju, man.
2. Mirage of Blaze - that whole self-sacrifice and angsty love, Naoe really moves me.
3. Ranma - I really do feel Ranma is a part of me. Silly, I know, but quite true. I understand his reactions and much of his reasoning. He's a cute little bugger that stole my heart. I see a lot of myself in him: making a lot of mistakes, but gamefully forging on. Still figuring out his emotions and what to do with them. Heck, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up!

Kenshin!! All flavors thereof. Read Kittens' and Aernath's posts and there you have it.
There is just something about this character that leaves me breathless -- which I think is a testament to how well written he was.
Slayers. Here's a show that is so completely foolish on the surface and works on so many different levels. I wish I were a good enough writer to be able to do it justice in a literary analysis type of way...
From there, I have a huge gap to a great wealth of equally enjoyed series, including Gokudo, Chrono Crusade, Trigun, Fushigi Yuugi, Saber Marionette J, Gankutsuo, Card Captor Sakura, Naruto, Captain Tylor, Cowboy Bebop... the usual suspects, in other words
. Beloved, but not in any way so much as Kenshin or Slayers.

My favourite anime's Naruto (no surprise there) ^^;; - It has many genres to the series, and can make you laugh so much you cry or make you cry so much that you feel pain about that particular scene for a long time. The music is beautiful and wonderfully composed with a wide variety of different music for different occassions.
Next comes Azumanga Daioh - I could watch this series over and over again and not get bored. The style of humour is just great and I love the character designs.
Fruits Basket - A wonderfully made anime with a soft and beautiful warmth from it. It has comedy as well as being serious and is a great anime for all those animal lovers out there!
