Well episode 42 was interesting, but much of the stuff that was mentioned regarding fighting capability were minor spoilers that I had already heard some time ago. But I'm eager to see what will happen in episode 43. Always need more, more.
Now if the Bleach anime ends around episode 52, I'm wondering if and when the anime may begin to diverge away from the manga. Would they just decide to end it at a good jumping off point around there or will they create their own anime-only ending?
I mean...since anime seasons are often divided up into 13 week segments maybe they'd be able to stretch it out to a 65 episode long anime? But then they might not be able to end it at a good spot in the story if they extended the anime that far.
What do you guys think? Are we shortly going to see the anime veer off from the manga? Please try to explain without giving away at any manga spoilers.
I'm pretty sure the series will continue on past 52 episodes. There's still quite a bit of ground to cover in the manga before this arc ends. Plus, there's the new arc that's just begun. I think the 52 episode count was just a rumor/misinformation. If it does end at 52... that's not a very smart move on their part.
But aren't they rapidly catching up to the manga at their current rate?
It would be bad if they ended the series partially going into an arc. I wonder if they might start adding filler material?
So as of today how many episodes of anime could they create at the current rate they are going (without creating filler episodes)? About 70? I haven't read any guesstimates for about three months so I've lost track of things.
So many animes seem to fall into this trap of catching up to the never-ending-manga so quickly. I hope that this just doesn't come to an "unfinished" conclusion like Inuyasha or Hunter x Hunter.

The anime seems to cover about 2.56 manga chapters per episode. The beginning of the Soul Society arc began at manga chapter 51 (with the appearance of Byakuya and Renji) which corresponds to anime episode 15, and episode 40 corresponds to chapter 115. The Soul Society arc ends at chapter 182 so they have 67 chapters of material left to cover which (based on 2.56 chapters per episode) equals about 26 more anime episodes.
They would have to gloss over a whole lot if they planned to resolve it all by episode 52. It would be a real shame if they did too (or just rewrote the entire ending) because the manga just keeps getting cooler and cooler.

I have to just say this. I thought episode 42 was outstanding. I got to the end in about 40 seconds flat (it felt like, anyway) and was screaming "Noooooooooo!"
*sigh*
I'm with everyone on the "please god no filler" too. Only a very few shows have ever done filler well and, gee... I can't think of them right now.
