another question about YJ.....
Can anybody tell me how to download the japanese font into my netscape navigator, and where I get it to download from? I'm seriously sick to death of looking at question marks!!!

I know how you feel! I'm still looking at ? and @ and odd squares when I go to Yahoo Japan!
Actually, the only way I have ever known where to get Japanese font is when I first go to Yahoo Japan on my computer, there used to be a download box that popped up that asked me if I wanted to download Japanese display text. But I clicked on the box that said never download so now I obviously regret that decision.
Sorry I can't be of any further help...I would just do a search and see if you can find a free download somewhere ^_~ Good luck

This might help (if you are using Windows):
Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel->Regional and Language Settings
Under the Languages Tab, click the box for 'Install Files for East Asian languages'
Hit ok and a box should (maybe) come up asking you to insert your Windows cd.
After it installs, the ?s should come up as the correct Japanese symbols.

On YJ, it just says that the page won't display properly without the correct font, it doesn't give you a means to download it.
As for windows, that would help, Lys, if I had a windows cd. I got windows xp when I bought my new tower at the begining of the year in like January or Feb.
Which means it's probably out of date by now! LOL!

The Japanese language files used to be available on the Microsoft website (back when I first installed on a Win98 machine - I've since moved on to XP).. you might try checking thereDevoVamp wrote:On YJ, it just says that the page won't display properly without the correct font, it doesn't give you a means to download it.

I would recommend a program called NJ Star Communicator. It lets you read mulitple Asian languages in your broswer. It also lets you type in those languages (super useful). Google it.
If you want to install something Microsoft-based, there is the Global Method Input Editor. You have the option of installing just the font or the text-writing program.

For those who bought their comp pre-installed - no need to whip out that non-existant CD. ^^
I downloaded all of these a while back, but they should still work the same.

Hey guys! Sorry for taking so long to answer, but I've been having a nervous breakdown (or two) over the weekend! LOL!
Anyway, Sugerflower has been wonderful, and sent me the fonts. (Thanks, hun!!) I installed them, and now the main ads and the titles seem to come up, but the auctions themselves are still question marks. Is there some other setting or something that I have to turn on to make Netscape read the things, or what?
Ah, modern technology. Can't live without it, and can't throw the rotten computer out the window when it doesn't work! LOL!

I don't use Netscape, but you should be able to view everything by going to the top of your browser and clicking:
View
Encoding
Japanese (you probably have a couple choices here--just pick one)
These might not be the exact words, but they'll be something similar. At least, that's how I view YJ auctions.

Hey guys! I FINALLY got the question marks to disappear!
Klet, you suggested that I change the preferences in netscape, which I tried, and which didn't work, but it did give me an idea.......
I went into the control panel and clicked the language options, which did give me the option to download (I don't know from where) the asian language settings. I tried this, and since it didn't ask me to overwrite them, I think it chose to use the Japanese fonts that Sugerflower sent to me. It didn't seem to do much at the time, (the whole thing took about 2 or 3 minutes) but when I started my computer again, the question marks were gone!
I'd much rather look at Japnase that I don't understand than question marks!!
So, thank you everybody, since it would have taken me ages and ages to figure this out, if I was lucky!!!!
