Home Cinema System Recommendations

Post by K86 »

Hi

I'm looking for a home cinema system for my room but I'm having a little trouble in finding a new one

Earlier this week I got hold of a Logitech z5500 and it was pretty good, I could hook up my Xbox, DVD player and Sky box to it and it all sounded good until a quiet moment on TV and I was hearing a very load hissing/buzzing sound and after a while I found out that this sound was coming from the Sub itself
I looked on the internet most of the day and a lot of people have had this problem with the system so after a long thought I sent it back and I'm now looking for a new one but I have no idea which one to get so any recommendations would be grateful, anyway to make it a little easier here is what I want it to do

Built in amp
Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic 2 decoder
at least 1 optical and coaxial input
No DVD player included

Thank you

Your problem with the last one was probably just an unshielded cable creating a 60 cycle hum/ buzz in you sub :?

Price point that you are looking for?

Yeah, a lot of it depends on how much you want to spend. My Dad just got a new TV and speakers and I think that was GB£5k
The saying "you get what you pay for" is aften quite true when referring to electrical equipment but for some advice, send a few hours online and visit the various comparrison websites for specifications and unbais reviews.
The magazine "Which?" is a great place to start as they have specialist audio/video supplements.
Browse the magazines in the newsagets for a few minutes too, even if you don't buy the mag you can pick up some good tips by scanning the articles then you can do some more web reserach on prices once you've got some reccomended brands/models.

Not if I can help it.

Suggesting a couple of magazines to browse through in the shops, I seem to remember "Home Cinema Choice" and "What Home Cinema" as being topic specific and useful with reviews and whatnot. Something I learnt from my job that I never thought would come in handy. XD

Also, browsing online for another magazine, "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision", I found out that this month's issue has an "Ultimate Guide to Home Cinema" section in it.

I don't know offhand what system would work for you, but are you sure the hissing wasn't just a defect in your unit? I've heard nothing but good about the Z5500...
