Clothes (my family doesn't think I look professional enough, so they got me a pants suit, and my sister finally caught on to my addiction and bought me a shirt that says will work for anime :evilblk with obsessive on the back...I'm not obsessed... /hp ), mangas (Get Backers, Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Gaiden, JIng), video game (FF Crystal Chronicles), a computer (now even on dial up it seems to fly) and my personal favorite the movie the Last Unicorn on dvd (loved it since I was five). Oh yeah....and my weight in chocolate....and half of it's still in existence :dban

my sweet husband went overboard on me :)

he gave me a gorgeous lenox porcelin malificent from sleeping beauty, ninja gaiden black for the xbox, several manga and chocolate, a nice dremel kit for working on models, and a full size metal ddr pad plus game, so we can play at home :)

I got him FLCL (the whole set), soundtracks to chrono crusade and madlax, the brak show season 1, evil dead regeneration for the pc, a mystery science theater 3000 set, the brak maquette, and an 18" statue of faye valentine from cowboy bebop :)

Not much of anime/manga proportions, mostly clothing and cooking tools, an interest that most of my relatives understand and can indulge. I got a nice set of stock pots for making various kinds of broth, a necessary first step in lots and lots of recipes. And several interesting cookbooks, one of which came with a solemn warning that the publisher would not be held responsible for accidental cases of poisoning caused by attempts to try the recipes that follow. Mmm ... cream of fugu soup ... sounds simple enough ...

I did get a VHS tape of Animatrix and a DVD of ... err ... some series that my daughter got in a big stack of discarded DVDs from her anime club. All I recall at the moment was that the description on the back made it sound like a cross between Marmalade Boy and Scooby Doo.

My Liz got a lovely Bleach calendar from me: I was happy she liked it, as I hadn't unrolled it and so bought it based on the cover on the dealer's site. She says she can't wait until March, when an especially hunky guy (the one with tattoos all over his body) is featured.

My wife got a whole pen case of gel pens from Kinokuniya. She's intrigued with the fact that the ink is full of sparklies. That will make her editorial work especially impressive.

Oliver got enough catnip to keep him stoned until the meadow voles come back out of hibernation. (We were glad to see that, even though he's now 12 years old, he's kept enough kitten in him to pounce on discarded bows and chase them to ground under the tree.)

Whatever you got, I hope you received the best gift of all this year -- the feeling of being upheld and affirmed by your friends and family.

Nothing anime related for me this year, but definatly something Japanese...
I collect nihonto (yes their is a hobby rediculously more expensive than cel collecting) and my hubby Tim got me an absolutly stunning koto late Muromachi era wakizashi smithed by Kanesaki with original koshirae. I am absolutley stunned, it is flawless which is remarkable for being made somewhere between 1573 and 1591. I am going to be lost in the hammon for months!

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Beautiful blade there Morgan! As you say, it's amazing that it's survived in such good condition- its a testament to those skilled swordsmiths, the best in the world. If I had a 'spare' $30k I'd get a nice sword set like that or even have one commissioned Image

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

Fugu is a kind of pufferfish that ingests a marine bacteria which produces a powerful nerve poison, tetradotoxin. It is concentrated in the liver and some other organs, which experienced Japanese chefs learn how to isolate and remove, so the rest of the fish can be used to make what is supposed to be an extraordinarily delicious but extremely risky sushi, as the lethal dose is extremely small and undetectable by taste or smell. There is also a soup made from it, which can also be lethal as the active agent is heat-stable.

There is no known antidote or treatment for the poisoning, once it begins, and according to tradition, the chef who served the fugu dish is supposed to commit ritual suicide if his guest dies of it. In any case, a number of deaths occur yearly in Japan as a result.

You can follow this link to learn some basic information on the phenomenon.

An interesting sidelight: tetradotoxin in smaller quantities is said to have been used by Caribbean witch doctors to produce the zombie state, in which the victim remains completely conscious but is considered dead for all intents and purposes by everyone else and so is buried alive (but dug up again by the witch doctor to become his half-mad slave).

I'm waiting for my fugu shipment to arrive via FedEx from Osaka....
