current movies vs George R. R. Martin
current movies vs George R. R. Martin
These are the current movies listed at my local plex. I only recognize maybe 5 of them and have no idea about the others. I can only think of one movie in the works that I'm willing to see and that is the Harry Potter movie which wont' come out for a long time. The movie industry was saved in the past few years with the LOTR, Star Wars and HP movies but now that the LOTR and SW films are done, it's looking bleak. If you put a gun to my head, I'd have to vote to go see V. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with my current book series by George R. R. Martin: Song of fire and ice. I love these books even though they're each about 1,000 pages long. I'm on book 3 right now and it gets more interesting with each chapter. Hours upon hours of getting lost for only $8.95 per book.

That was a long time ago. For real.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Man, I know what you mean, soda. I went to exactly one movie last year. (There were actually a couple others that I kinda wanted to see but just never made it out to the theatre.
) But I have a very small window of things I find entertaining ... all the movies seem either too scary or too sexy or too violent or too intense or just too dumb for my liking.
(<-- with that kind of list, there isn't much left, is there!
) I really miss the anticipation for the LOTR movies.

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?

I will take that under advisement.

After looking at Chris' Blog, I think I'll give "V" a pass:

I read some favorable reviews, but they were all by men, and a lot of guys (though obviously not all) just don't seem very bothered when films portray a man physically and/or mentally abusing the girl/woman he "loves".
I guess they figure it comes with the Comic Book territory.... turns my stomach though.
A film's got to have a great deal going for it for me to put up with that. Particularly if he's doing it "for her own good". Yuck.

I only became interested in Martin once the Feast for Crows did come out. I've been able to read all the books back to back which is nice because I'd be totally lost if I had to wait betwixt books. But now I"m looking at having to buy Feast for Crows in hardback when all my other books of his are paperback and only $8.95. Maybe by the time I get to Feast, they'll have it in paperback. I heard that Feast was going to be twice as big as it is now but the publisher had him cut it in half. Can you imagine a 2200 page hardback book?

Chris obviously didn't get it. The torture that Evey endures is much more psychological than physical, and is used to nullify the brainwashing that she has been subjected to at the hands of an Orwellian government. The methods used in this story are extreme. They need to be in order to face the hopeless rhetoric of a totalitarian state.irmgaard wrote:After looking at Chris' Blog, I think I'll give "V" a pass.

If you can't find that to be a justifiable means, then this movie is not for you - not to mention the graphic novel, which for everyone who does enjoy this movie should read! While I did enjoy the film, it isn't Alan Moore's story - a story written during the Reagan/Thatcher years which was, in essence, the beginning of this whole mess we're all facing today.
You know, it's funny.... all of these very similar ideas were presented in "Fight Club", and so many of the same critics were disturbed by that film's methods as well.

I loved these movies and I loved the books even more.
Their messages and the emotions they invoke are very poignant to me.
But then again, I'm a guy, so there ya go.

Ah, sorry!
Mine came as an advanced reader's galley, which I didn't have to pay for. (Check my occcupation....)
Paperback, according to BIP, is scheduled for mid-September ($7.99 US).
The fact that he had to cut it in half means we should see the next installment fairly quickly, unlike the time between Storm of Swords and Feast for Crows - almost six years. So, by the time you're done with Feast, the next one should be queing up!
