Is your 1st anime still your best...

The first anime I saw was Galaxy Express 999 when the Sci-Fi channel showed anime on Saturdays. It is still my favorite anime movie.

The first tv show I saw was Sailor Moon while I still watch it from time to time I have discovered other shows I like more.

Seeing how similar your first couple of lists are to mine makes the want to get the lead out and watch those of your current lists that I haven't seen. Or finish the ones I started... like Maison Ikokku and Hana Yori Dango

I grew up on Captain Harlock, Mazinger Z, Treasure Island and... Candy, Candy.

And although my preferences have changed completely since then, those "first" animes always keep a special place in my heart. (Aaaaaaaaw

I'd say my first real exposure to anime (knowing it was Japanese) was back in 1992 when I, in my middle-school years, up late and managed to see Vampire Hunter D, Akira, and Robot Carnival on TNT or TBS. I had seen Speed Racer before too when it was on late on MTV knowing it was Japanese.

In 1993, Ronin Warriors aired on a local channel. I was a fan.. It was soon followed by Dragon Ball and then Sailor Moon. DBZ would also show up, but it didnt last past 20 episodes as did Sailor Moon. I watched them all religiously in the summer, but lost interest when their reincarnations started coming on other cable channels like USA.
(back when cartoon network only played classic american cartoons)

Then in 1994 or 95, they opened a Suncoast in the mall and it had a very small anime section under special interest.
I thought about D, Ronin Warriors, and Sailor Moon and decided to buy something.
I strain real hard to remember what it was I first bought, but I think it was Devilman. Then it was a Tenchi volume and the other Devilman. After that I took a wild chance and got my first subbed anime as my third purchase in 1995: ZENKI

I was hypnotized by Zenki which I boast a huge collection of merchandise and cels from today. I even own the domain kishinzenki.com which used to be the largest Zenki fansite on the net until I took it down for eternal remodelling.

After that I bought my first Animerica and the first Slayers volume dubbed.
When I returned a week later they had it subbed and I exchanged it showing the first signs of my dislike for dubbed anime.

I then got a job at Suncoast in late 1997 and worked there two and a half years spending most of my money in the store and beefing up my collection of vhs and now dvds...

I think Ive got around 1650 anime vhs and dvds which include each of those old anime that I used to watch (except Speed Racer)..

Though I only have a few and have really only scratched the surface of dbz and sailor moon.. I just cant like them that much anymore.

My first anime ever was actually Sailor Moon (go figure). Now...here is the interesting part...while I love BSSM to death and collect most cels from that series, I can't help but now claim Ah! My Goddess as my favorite anime now.

I can't help it, the TV series, movie, OVA and mini-goddess series are all too cute and I love the storyline. Not to mention the cels are overly gorgeous and you can tell that the animators spent a lot of time on each of the cels in regards to detail and emotion.

Now I do have other anime that I really enjoy as well. My NEWEST happens to be Bleach...I've read the first 5 volumes of the manga and I'm hooked. Others include classics such as DBZ, DBGT, Evangelion, Gundam Wing, VHD and Steel Angel Kurumi. I have very interesting tastes as I don't just like a specific genre in anime if you haven't noticed.

I'm glad to see there is another Steel Angel Kurumi fan.

I rarely hear of people mentioning that anime series. I've only seen the first season and have the DVD's but I still need to get my hands on the second season.

LOL! I'm really glad there are others out there too that like it. Now just to let you know I own both the seasons and the mini-Ovas but the first season is the best. I wasn't very fond of second season, it was ok. I think it was a rather cute anime! It had a lot of action in it as well, and my favorite was toward the end of first season. Too bad they didn't make it out of cels, I'd be all over them!

I like keeping track of things.

But on a practical basis, the list was helpful in informing me on what artwork I should concentrate on buying. There are other reasons that play a role also such as rarity, price, how much I liked the character designs, how I much I liked the characters, how many female characters there were, how popular the anime was (more popular anime artwork is harder to acquire), etc.

But most of the TV and OVA anime on my current favorite list are shounen/seinen romance anime. And those are the anime I most feel like rewatching these days. I doubt many members here would be into that genre much except for possibly Darksuzaku and JWR.

I had quite a time with my Japanese video rental store because stopped getting Kurumi tapes at the second to last tape of the series. I went to their sister store and they didn't have the last tape either. In order to see the last three episodes I watched a HK DVD. My video store finally had the last tape available for rent about five months later (July 2001) when I no longer needed it.

Other shows on my favorites list at one time were Ayashi no Ceres, Love Hina, Inuyasha, Gatekeepers, Now and Then Here and There, Vandread, Initial D, Angelic Layer, Noir, Witch Hunter Robin, Hellsing, Dual, Read or Die OVA, Hikaru no Go, Tsukihime, One Piece...

Ah...the old days. Favorites changing as a candle in the wind. The real test for me is what anime I could most easily rewatch RIGHT NOW. Those are the anime I consider to be my favorites.

I think Astro Boy (the original) was the first anime I ever saw. I used to love it as a kid. But then it went off the air and Sailor Moon popped into my life. Chicks saving the world, yay. I instantly loved it. I would get up early before school just so I could sit down and watch it without having to eat breakfast as well. As much as I still love Astro Boy I don't love it as much as my second anime, Sailor Moon. I do enjoy heaps of other shows as well, I am into GTO at the moment, but Sailor Moon is my absolute fav.

What a good idea for a thread!

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie back in '94, was the one anime that got me into it all and I still hold it very highly at the top!

An awesome and worthy representation of the game, as well as awesome character designs and artwork...I just love it! There are 'others' I recall before that, but Street Fighter was the one!

They're not my first anime that I've seen, but the first 2 anime that I bought with my own money were Mask of Zeguy & RG Veda, which are my favorites. RG Veda the manga was so screwed up and bloody that loving the anime was inevitable for me. As for Mask of Zeguy, it really had potential to be better than it was. If a remake, highly unlikely, were to ever happen, I would not only buy the Japanese DVD, but the USA DVD for good measure. I love RG Veda Cels, but I have never found any for Mask of Zeguy. One day maybe.....

Oh, heck no. I mean (and I think I've said this before), my first anime was Pokemon. Next came Cardcaptors, which, some of you may be shocked to hear, I actually did enjoy. Of course, I think I was about 12 at the time. The Great and Evil kymaera likes to rag on me about that.

Says he: "I'm a little worried about you. I mean, Kay's girls saw it and said, 'This is stupid.'"

Says I: "Yeah, but I'm willing to bet that they'd already seen other anime--and in Japanese, too."

So, yeah, my first is most definately not my favorite. I'd hate to name a favorite, just because there's always new stuff coming out, but I'd have to say that Ranma, Esca, Bleach, and Monster are at the top of the list.
