Yesterday and today, I've sporadically been getting messages like the
following:

You cannot make another post so soon after your last; please try again in a short while.

It's odd because it doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes, I can post
without any problem even if it's within a minute of my last post. If I get the
above, though, I'm locked out until about three minutes of my last post.
Mentioned this to Baakay and it's happened to her as well.

Yes, Magician has upped the time permitting between posts due to some (many) rapid-fire double, triple, and quadruple postings lately. The timeout has a good effect and a bad effect:

It should help restrict double-postings.

It is a pain in the arse if you manage to compose your next post before the three-minute timer is up.

So we'll all probably be seeing that message a lot more.

It takes me a long time to compose my posts to begin with. Now I just spend an extra two to three minutes hitting the preview button and checking for typos before I post.

...and then, when I discover more typos after I've posted. I go back and hit the Preview button some more. Then I go and do something somewhere else on the web, come back and hit the post button again.

Hopefully my post isn't too bad after that.

Hmmm ... this hasn't happened to me yet, but I haven't been posting around here much lately, either. Thanks for the explanation, though. Now, when it happens, I'll be a little less confused. (But, only a little -- small brain and all that. )

Not that I'm trying to come out against this idea (cuz I'm not. I don't think it's a bad idea, considering what happened in some threads recently), but the built-in time delay does make it a bit difficult to do a daily "beta crawl", in which you might want to reply to several posts in different threads. Is there any way to limit the time delay to posts in the same thread? I know there is already a double-posting rule on Beta, but it also seems that a few folks routinely ignore it, so I can understand the need for a more "forceful" way of enforcing that rule. Anyhow, just a couple of thoughts from this end of the otaku-verse.

I think that is a FANTASTIC idea. I'll echo Tex that it would be cool if it could be thread-specific, but thumbs up to the change!

Well, to be honest, I think a lot of the double-posting lately is due to the
poor performance that we've been seeing from the host. It time-outs when
posting and you're not sure if it went through or not. I know that all of my
few double posts have been due to that.

I have mixed feelings about the idea.
+ Definitely cuts down on accidental double posting.
+ Might discourage some of the poor habits. For example, people coming
back after several days and bumping every thread in a forum with a "me too"
or equivalently non-significant posts.
+ Physically limits the number of posts that Baakay, kittens and aernath can
make in a day which should slow down their numbers significantly

- Discourages posting in general because it's frigging irritating. I know that
I'll be posting a lot less because I'm not going to continue doing the three
minute waiting unless I feel it's well worth the wait.

I'm not sure that the positives outweigh the extreme negative.

Changing the time limit between posts is an option. Limiting it to specific sections is not. It's a global feature, and not just restricted to public posts. PM's also fall under this banner. It irritates me too.

However. double, triple, and more posts irritate me more. The rules clearly state double-posting is not allowed, and yet I see them all over the forum. Yet another example of the rules being ignored for whatever reason. I will be looking into more code changes to enforce the rules as the facelift and move progress. I will probably reduce the time between posts since this setting has bit me too, but it's not going back to the 15 seconds it was before.

I noticed this too and thought maybe it was a glitch. I was in a hurry and
trying to post my usual comments before leaving for work but was unable.
I had to just leave the window open and abandon my comments. I came
back later and thought "Didn't I post in this thread?!" And realized that I
couldn't because I didn't have time. It was very disappointing and annoying.

I think a time limit is great but the double posting I've seen is sometimes due
to what kymaera said, connection time outs. There is one person I can think
of right now that has been posting and reposting in the same thread over
and over (an infamously heated thread) so maybe a mod should contact
him directly about that? I don't think he knows the rules and I don't think
the time out feature would prevent someone like that from posting en masse.

Maybe 3 minutes is a tad long? I do like the concept here, but it just feels
too long and some of us don't have that kind of time to wait. At 3 minutes a
post, and you want to post in maybe 10 different threads, that's 30 minutes.

repeating things!

Also, it seems this timeout applies to editing your posts! I am currently
waiting to publish my edited comment LOL

Oh yeah. 15 seconds is way too short. Heck..most of the time, the posts
won't even go through in that time period. Three minutes is way too long.
60-90 seconds is a lot more reasonable.

The double and triple posts irritate me, too. I'm not talking about the accidental ones that happen because of browser time-outs. Those are beyond anyone's control. I'm talking about the ones that seem all too intentional. And, yes, the same thread WC alluded to came to my mind first, too ... although it's not the only instance. Just the most recent one.

Anyhow, I didn't want it to seem I was getting down on anyone for the accidental double-posts that happen when the browser times out. Sorry if it seemed that way.

My guess is that it'll just take a bit of trial and error to get to a time frame between posts that gives everyone a good balance. But, I have no doubt you guys will get us there. You always manage to keep this place running smoothly ... and that can't be an easy task!
