Off the top of my head, I'll say Miyazaki cels even though that's not an anime per se. I think those cels will retain their high prices over the long run because of the renowned animator and the limited number due to there just being movie cels. Now much older anime cels will incur higher prices but that is more because of the very limited selection.
I feel SM, DBZ, etc. have had their run (much like what Inu collectors are experiencing now) and then the market will eventually taper off. Obviously there will be exceptions, but as a whole those cels don't command the high prices they did before.
Would love to hear what others think.
EDIT: Ack! I'm so slow posting, Kittens and HotIce beat me to it. But I agree with them.

Some American productions are among the most expensive series you can
collect from as well. Especially Disney. Anything old and unusual, such as
Tex Avery's original stuff and everything Chuck Jones has ever touched.
Roger Rabbit isn't cheap either. Part of the challenge is even finding the stuff!
Also, sericels and hand painted limited edition cels can be pricey.

Anything that's really popular at the moment and/or has die hard fans to bid each other up. (How's that for broad??)
For example, IY cels are really crazy expensive at the moment. I've also noticed that the last few sketch sets for Eureka 7, FMA, and Priness Tutu have all ended between 80,000 - 200,000yen.
Oh, and yeah, Miyazaki cels too.
Edit: American shows didn't even cross my mind. D'oh!
WC's right - those prices are scary!

I can't believe no one has mentioned evangelion yet!
Although some Eva cels have started to come down in price, any decent shots of rei start at 80,000 yen and go right on up. I don't think I've ever seen one on mandarake's auctions that was less then 120,000 yen to start.
Also, another popular show-Cowboy Bebop. Cels of Julia and Vicious tend to be pretty pricey compared to the other characters-usually $500+
As for other expensive cels...while they aren't really part of the series per se, usually hanken cels tend to be the most expensive from a series. But that is more of a category.

Though not anime, Disney cels without question top the list. The best cels from some of the earlier movies like Snow White can fetch as much as $40K!!!! For anime, some specific Miyazaki clearly top the list, with Evangelion close behind most of the other titles (though starting to fade significantly).
I guess everyone has mentioned these before. Let see if I can think of anything to add.....
Almost any Kawajiri series (Dagger of Kamui, Ninja Scroll, VHD:Bloodlust) is up there.
Many Oshii series like Ghost in the Shell and Akira also fetch quite a bit.
Good Berserk (pretty expensive for a TV series)
It's not uncommon for a TV series to jump in price, but as it ages the sheer supply tends to swamp the demand (can't wait for the day this is the case with Noir so I can pick up some). Short OVA and Movies seem to stay much more consistent.

Wow, that's pretty high for a Gundam! I wish I had seen it because it must have been pretty significant! Normally, the things I see go the highest are Miyazaki with backgrounds, but the highest I've seen so far (at auction) was a Miyu OVA. I had to drop out, and it ended up going at over $5K!bulma_gt wrote:I don't know, but the other day at YJ I saw a Gundam cel (don't remember which Gundam, but it was an old one) that the start price of the auction was 250.000 yens and to my surprise, somebody actually bid on it

I will have to go with Miyazaki cels. They consistently go for prices in the four figures. Certain shots from other series may go for more, but for consistently going for lots of money, my money would be still be on Miyazaki.
The highest auction I have seen recently is the pan cel from the coffin scene from Crest of the Stars that ended at 500k yen earlier this year.
And for the fun of seeing what YJ auctions end for, there is always this site. http://www.aucfan.com/category2/sy-c2084005356-op.html Some great cels have been won in the past month.

In the non-Miyazaki/Ghibli, non-hanken, non-pan anime cel category, "Five Star Stories" is pretty expensive.
Sentimental Journey character TV series background cels have gone for over $1000 on YJ on several occasions. That's pretty, %&# high considering Senti is a non-mainstream, bishoujo anime TV series. Those SG gaming fans are looney.

Yes indeed Miyazaki (don't tell me...
) but what also goes very high are genga where there is handwriting on off Miyazaki, those would be more of the older shows before Studio Ghibli like Heidi, Conan,... and those are somethimes not even that nice..
otherwise Ed from bebop is also a charachter that has a high value

Excellent suggestions there, I think that covers most of them.
You can trust me to add 'naked women' to that list too. Seriously, if any series depicts a female with little/no clothing it will sell for more than it 'should'.
I know fangirls that will also pay lots for half [or fully] naked men. Noone here on Beta would, of course
Some hentai series are praised for their artwork so combine that with a naked woman and you'll have to pay 20,000y - 120,000y.
Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on the series, character and scarcity/explicitness of the 'exposure'.
Some series that spring to mind: Mezzo Forte, Kite, Soreyuke Marin Chan, WordsWorth and the CGI anime Bible Black.
Which reminds me, I need to sell nearly half my collection to fund some lushious new Marin Chan artwork....
