Anime DVDs? Anime Cels? Or Both! (Read for details!)

Well basically this is what i meant by the title. I myself have been collecting Anime DVDs for 3 or so years now. Up untill about two weeks ago that was my main focus. Basically any spare money I had would be directed in the purchases of DVDs. However as of recently this has changed quite a bit into a new direction. Cels. Without getting into a long drawn out story basically got a city hunter cel, loved it, wanted more. My question to you is do you collect Anime DVD as well as Cels? Do you just collect Cels? Or do you do both?

I myself will now be slowing down tremondously buying DVDs to focus on cel purchases because buying cels gives me (at the current time) a much greater thrill and enjoyment then collecting DVDs had provided me.

Also please list roughly how many DVDs you own. I want to formulate an average of DVDs that cel owners own to ratio of cels (yea i got loads of free time lol).

I collect anime DVDs to an extent. I only collect the ones I really like. So far my collection includes: Gundam Wing, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Sailor Moon, Ah! My Goddess, Fruits Basket, Steel Angel Kurumi and almost all the Dragonball Z/GT Movies (too many episodes!). So my DVD collection consists of all the above that has come out on DVD, including Movies/OVAs.

I might pick up a few more like ANC or Inuyasha, but I'm quite happy with my anime collection thus far.

Now my cel to DVD ratio? Whoa...my cels far outbeat the number of animes I have on DVD...I think 201 to...7? And that's just my Sailor Moon cels! Not all the cels I have in my gallery that are not SM related...

Not really. There are very few anime I feel like rewatching (especially the last few years). So the DVDs I bought tend to be either:

1.My favorite anime that I COULD and would rewatch.
2. Anime I wanted to see on DVD because of the cels I have or have seen up for sale.
3. Anime I wanted to see as soon as possible because I wanted to know how much I liked the anime and if I should collect from it.
4. Anime I wanted to see in DVD quality on my TV set.
5. Were recommended adult anime.

Also please list roughly how many DVDs you own. I want to formulate an average of DVDs that cel owners own to ratio of cels (yea i got loads of free time lol).

What counts? Only licensed DVDs? Do R2 DVDs count? How do multiple DVD sets count as one or by the number of DVDs in it?

That's 43 DVDs depending on how you count them. I have about 345 cels that I intended on buying (I don't include extras in my counts)

So that's 345 cels vs. ?43 DVDs.

You know ... this topic intrigued me enough to sit down and do something I haven't done in quite a while -- take stock of my anime dvd collection. I collected DVDs only for about four or five years. I had a couple of cels during that time, but did not collect cels seriously until about two and a half years ago. Now, I mostly buy cels/sketches ... but I still collect anime DVDs from time to time. Basically, I will check out a series via Netflix and, if I like it, I will collect the DVDs.

Anyhow ... this is the part of this little survey that rather embarrasses me: the number of anime DVDs I own ...

About 660, give or take. I keep them in books, and have 8 books full of discs, plus a 9th book that is partially full and a few that are still in their cases (not yet in the books).

Number of cels/sketches (according to my RS gallery counter): 563

So, um ... yeah ... what's wrong with being compulsively addicted to something you love?

I keep a list just so i don't end up re-buying a dvd I already own. That said, I'm not crazy and don't buy single volumes usually, added up a series would be way to expensive. Sales & box sets!

Speaking of sales, TRSI has one on Geneon discs. Seems their closing out a bunch. You can get 10 dvd's for $50 or 25 for $100. Their sites lagging hard but I manged

I never thought of it as collecting DVDs, but I do have quite a few.

I have 64 titles. I'm counting an entire TV/OVA series such as RK, FY etc as one title. This doesn't even count the ones I bought, lost interest in and then sold.

My money goes first to cels; after that, backgrounds, followed by sketches. DVDs are way down the list. I tend to view the DVDs as reference material for properly IDing, verifying authenticity or setting up goals for my production art collection. If I'm not planning on collecting from a series, I will eventually sell the DVDs on ebay as used.

EDIT: Sorry you wanted an idea of how many cels etc to get a ratio. Not counting what has yet to arrive, I have 321 cels, 289 backgrounds, 35 other production art (sketches/storyboards/settings) sets.

I collect both. I don't necessarily collect just Anime DVD's, but mainly because they are so expensive down here. If I had $100 to spend I would by a cel first though.

How many Anime DVD's do I own. Not many! I own the complete sereis of Sailor Moon(5 boxs) and 10 single Australian released discs, GTO (10 discs), Chobits (6 discs), Neon Genesis(6 discs), Bubble Gum Crisis 2040 (6 discs) and Fruits Basket.(4 discs) I have the first season of the R. Kenshin tv series (6 discs). I also have the Neon Genesis movies (2 discs).

I would love to have so many more but the price is crazy. I would rather buy a cel, of which I only own about 35.

But the BWA is coming up and so to is Christmas. I hope to accumulate a few more DVD's and cels

Absolutely nothing!

I use DVDprofiler to keep track of all my DVDs. I don't have them separated out as to which is anime and which isn't. Yes, I actually collect DVDs that aren't anime. And I could tally all the art I have listed in my gallery but I'm too lazy. Besides, not all of it is in there yet and I've been selling some and of course there will always be more additions. The same goes with my anime DVD collection. I used to own all the Sailor Moon DVDs. But recently, I've decided to sell them and they're almost all gone. I still even have anime on VHS. Yup! Been into anime that long.

Bottom line is . . . I really just don't want to know. An educated guess is they're fairly close number-wise. Price-wise is a whole other story.

I never did get dvd's as a "collection" but I'm slowly replacing my fansubs and VHS's with licensed copies as good deals appear.

Buuut... I also have pencil boards and figures and pins and manga and doujinshi and... *ponder* ... plushies... and dolls, and posters and wall scrolls. And fan art. And one very expensive resin doll who's the spitting image of Kenshin on purpose.

And this, children, is why Mom's house looks like it's been neglected for six years. It has been!

I didn't realize I had so many anime dvds until I had to pack them all up!
(and round them up from the neighbor kids - I actually got most of them BACK!!! ) I'd guesstimate it at maybe fifty dvd titles?

I started with anime dvds and manga.
But once I found cels... um... well... then I realized if I stopped buying dvds and manga all together, I'd have MORE cel money... well...

I rarely buy dvds now. The occasional manga. (Gotta get the Bleach ones and yaoi ones just to touch the pages... <.< >.> *cough*)

Yeah, I pretty much have directed my energies and money at cels now. Well, really sketches since Ichigo(Bleach) hit me last year. *nervous laugh*
As my husband said last night "Ichigo's not a costume for you, it's more like a lifestyle!" (I was talking about Halloween coming up... heh)

LOL I guess I should be more clear. 7 different anime shows on DVD, not 7 DVD's total. Sailor Moon itself has about a total of 34 DVD's. NGE has 11 with the movies. Steel Angel Kurumi 1st and 2nd season + OVAs make up 5 discs. So if we are counting discs, then the number is a lot bigger than 7. I was just counting the different anime titles that I own on DVD, which is thus far 7.

I was just reading everyone else's comments and seeing numbers that were very high, like 4000 and I said WHOA! Then I realized it meant discs.

I kind of think that cel collecting and DVD collecting go together quite nicely. There are many DVD collectors who collect cels and vise versa that you see posting on different forums.

As for me I have just over 700 anime DVDs and just under 300 cels and sketches.

I have about another 150 DVDs or so that are either on order or are in my backlog stash that I have not had time to watch yet

182 Anime DVD boxes- many are boxsets of 2-12 discs each so I guess that's around 400 in total;
Plus 60 hentai anime DVDs

Like Metheus and Japoro I recently took advantage of the RightStuf sale so that's another 25 DVDs to add

Aside from anime I also collect other DVDs/films- Japanese/Chinese/Korean movies and others. These total 2000.

How many cels do I have? I don't know- why ask me?! LOL

I love colecting these films but don't often have the opportunity to watch them all. I often watch the same film film 2 or 3 times before moving onto others, especially if it has a commentary.
