The greatest comic book film is set to be made...

That's right, Iron Man is coming! And they have already cast the perfect actor...Robert Downey Jr. Aside from the tabloid history, he is one of the best actors of our generation, and a perfect choice for this role! Not to mention, Jon Favreau is directing the film! If they can get a decent script for this, it will be a home run. Tony Stark is without a doubt one of the most screen-worthy and comlplex characters in comic history.

I'm greatly looking forward to this.

My personal favorite comic book character was Captain America. But I admit that Captain America would be a very tough character to portray convincingly in a live action movie.

It'll be interesting to see what characters Marvel will try to bring out in movies produced on their own.

Yes , this is the first of the "grand scheme" of movies Marvel inc. has planned. By Marvel producing their own movies they will be able to control their property better (no more movies like Ang Lee's Hulk) as well as accually keep a larger amount of the profits to help their finacial situation.
The Spider-man movies as well as the Blade series and Fantastic Four Marvel inc. only recieved 5% of the final profits. Now that company has emerged from bankruptcy they decided to produce a series of their own movies that will make or break the company for the future.

Personally, I'm waiting for "Ghost Rider" with Nicholas Cage. I hope Vengeance is in it too(fav!); though that's highly doubtful.

It's one of those movies that'll be released "when it's time".

Robert Downey Jr is a much better choice than Tom Cruise. I've never
been overly fond of Iron Man tho. He's just a rich guy with a super suit.
That's not really awe-inspiring to me. Opposed to Batman, who's a rich
guy with some enhancements, but he trained to be a fighter and he's
mentally very twisted.

I liked The Hulk movie very much. Ang Lee did a great job. The use of
comic panels in some of the transitions was clever and artistic. It's boring
when every superhero movie looks the same or has no substance.
The tortured relationship between a father and son was moving, to me.
It actually did well in the box office, especially world wide. But it was
not the summer block buster they were hoping for. Which is why they
are writing it off and "starting over" with yet another Hulk origin movie.
I personally think it's a huge mistake. Eric Bana won't be involved either.
Ugh...

Back to Iron Man. I'll see it, I see all comic book movies. I'm just glad
Tom Cruise isn't involved! 8) hehe

Ghost Rider looks pretty cool too. Nick Cage looks kinda old now, but
either way, that should be a fairly interesting movie. Like Okuni, I'm
wondering who will appear in the movie. I can't wait to see what they
do with Mephisto! 8O The new comic miniseries is quite good. I think
it's called Road to Damnation or something.

I agree. They got a superb performance out of Nick Nolte in that one. I think what put off a lot of people was the length of the film, and fact that it took an hour to see the Hulk.

As for Stark, I have to descent. Tony Stark is not just a Rich guy in a suit. He has demons just like Bruce Wayne. And like Wayne, it is those demons that drive him to use his wealth and intellect to do something good. Plus, Stark's addictions make him stand out as a very human character. I really hope they incorporate his alcoholism into the film, because that is something Downey can really delve into through his own personal demons. For years, the Tom Cruise myth has been floating around. Thank goodness they went with talent in this instance.

Was Iron Man's character developed later on? Because I haven't read any
of the newer comic series featuring the character. I'm only familiar with the
originally established mythos, which never interested me. If he does battle
with addiction and other internal conflicts, then I'd definitely be more
interested in his character. That sounds, as you say, much more human and real.
If they incorporate those aspects, he will be a sort of anti-hero (as much
as Batman ever was).

If that's the case, then Iron Man has a lot of potential. I haven't looked
at his character in many years, so I'll admit I'm ignorant of what he might
be like today.

About the Tom Cruise rumor, isn't that why Iron Man kind of resembles
him in the comics now? I've only looked at the art and thought it looked
like Marvel was taking cues from Tom Cruise in the design. Like, to ease
the transition when it becomes live action. "Wow, he looks like the comic!"
Or something like that.

What put myself and others with the Ang Lee's Hulk was the complete change from the actual written origin.

For those who may never have read them , Bruce Banner was involved with the making of a Gamma Bomb an offshoot of the H bomb tests and during the test a young man Rick Jones is spotted inside the danger zone. While the countdown clicked towards zero , Bruce attempts to rescue Rick and pushes him to safety just as the bomb goes off Bruce is hit by the Gamma Rays of the bomb which alter his DNA so that later when stimulated by anger or fear he mutates into the Hulk. Later stories involve his tortured life while attempting to cure himself while on the run from the world that is out to destroy the monster.

Later the TV show version the origin was changed to an accident while researching the brain and emotions with a Gamma Ray machine that went haywire. By then having mentions of A bombs was not fashionable unlike the coldwar era of the 60's when the Hulk was created.

In Ang Lee's version Bruce Banner's mutant DNA was passed from his father who partisipated in experiments and gets activated by a gamma ray burst but the trigger of the actual change is a surpressed memory of his father abusing and killing his mother.

Do you hate the TV series as well then? Since David's origin was changed.
Origins are typically tweaked when retold, especially when adapting a comic
from the 1960s for the big screen in 2003. The surpressed memory fueled
his rage and made the movie more like a Greek tragedy (that theme is
seen throughout the film). He's an uptight person who slowly loses control.

The movie's origin combined elements from the comic and TV show. It was
an accident, the machine was overloading, and Bruce saves his co-worker
by absorbing the gamma blast. That is combining the origins you see in
the comic, as well as the TV series. It was an accident, plus Bruce is being
the hero by protecting someone who was in harm's way. A normal person
would've died. They had to explain why he didn't die and the mutated
DNA makes sense (as much as movies are allowed to "make sense.")
Gamma bombs kill people. They kill everything. There's no arguing that.
They had to logically justify why Bruce was able to withstand the blast.
If you literally translate the 60s comic onto the big screen, it's going
to be laughed at. It just doesn't make sense.

Plus, the experiments conducted by the father were geared towards
creating a super soldier. He took plants and animals with specialized
defenses in order to make someone who did not have weaknesses.
It also explains why he's green, a completely absurd notion to begin with.

To me, the combination of the DNA, the experiments, the gamma
exposure plus the emotional elements made the movie's plot fairly
profound and complex. I feel like the audience didn't get a lot of the
brilliance of Ang Lee's film. Especially if you're expecting nothing more
than smashing and fighting.

I agree with parts of both your arguments. I am not a fan of changing super-hero origins in films, unless it is done well and for the sake of realism. In this case, there is no reason for Banner to be working on a gamma bomb in 21st century America. And as Toni said, the element of the past trauma involving his father and the fact that he is basically a genetic experiment at the hands of his own father make it a compelling movie. I also have to give Sam Elliot props for his performance. He really gave General Ross some dignity and complexity.

As with all things it comes to personal preferences and no ones own opinion is wrong.

The key with these new movies starting with Iron Man is that more of the actual indepth character of the "Hero with Flaws" that separated Marvel from the stories in DC and other comics of that era.

The writing of Stan Lee and those who worked off his guidelines produced stories that treated the reading audience with respect that they were "adult" enough to handle such issues.

Now I would expect that the Iron Man movie most likely will update the origin out of the Vietnam war where Tony Stark created the Iron Man armor to first off save his life. What I don't expect is the type of portrail of Marvel Characters in the Eighties TV shows such as the Guest appearances of Thor & Daredevil on the Incredible Hulk.

Those movies based on comics that stayed true to what made us want to read them have over the years done very well. The First 2 Superman movies , Spider-Man 1 & 2 , The Blade Trilogy , Batman Begins , Hellboy and the Rocketeer are examples.

I read someone at Marvel said that they didn't want to use a CG Fantastic Four "Thing" because of the backlash they got from the CG Hulk in the Movie.

I haven't seen the Fantastic Four Movie. I know an enraged Hulk is much larger than the Thing, but how do you guys feel about Marvel contemplating of using an actor next time for the Hulk if they make another movie as opposed to a CG Hulk? They said they might make another Hulk movie, but make it closer in spirit to the comic books.

I didn't think that the CG Hulk was that bad and that's probably the way to
go with any sequels.
