Post by Grico »

Hi, I just saw that the To Heart anime has finally got a street date for U.S. release, 3/27/07. Also SRP for volume 1 is only 19.99! I'm very excited myself, I have been waiting on the series for quite awhile now. A link to the press release is below as well.

Nice! I'll definitely have to get that one. /no1

To Heart is something I can definitely rewatch again. It's great that they restored it too. :)

Have you played the game Grico?

No I haven't yet. It's a game I keep an eye out for on ebay and the like. I have read the manga which was pretty enjoyable.

Not to be a total muffin head, but what's the basic plot of To Heart? I've heard of it and seen some art, but I don't know what it's about. Is it a comedic romance? Would you recommend it?

I see. Maybe sometime later then eh?

I've played it, but I never went that far into it mostly because I couldn't read much of the Japanese. To Heart is a dialog intensive game. It's not like Sentimental Graffiti 2 where I could figure out a lot of stuff just from the settings the characters were in. In To Heart a lot of different conversations take place in the same locations so it'smore important to understand exactly what they're saying in those conversations.

It's a fairly long game and I had to take notes while playing it which greatly added to the length of it. I went through about half of one game and stopped. Those in-game games were kind of fun to play, but I was never able to beat anyone other than Akari at it. And half the time, I didn't even beat HER. :P

I'd like to finish it one of these days just to see Serika wearing her evening gown. That would be nice. 8O

It's a slice-of-life story. Being more descriptive: It's like an idealistic high school/ subtle romance story. In the game you played Hiroyuki's part (the male lead). You basically walk to school with Akari (the female lead - your osananajimi "childhood friend"), you attend school, talk to your classmates, go out with your friends after school somewhere. It's like that - "Slice-of-Life" basically.

I wouldn't recommend it to you unless you like slice-of-life anime because you might find it pretty slow and boring otherwise.

EDIT:

Here is the To Heart Playstation game opening on You Tube. The game's opening is mostly the same as the anime's opening:

Oh neat! I like the slice of life genre mainly because it is so subtle and quiet. Sounds kinda good, I'll have to check it out. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me! :)

I have a copy of this series as a DVD bootleg (I think it's a vhs rip or something) and it's such a nice series with great character designs. It's good to see its finally coming here. :) This news makes me happy and mad at the same time. Here's why. Around 4 years ago I tried to sell my set on eBay since I only watched it once and never watched it again, however, eBay closed my auction saying it had already been released in the USA and told me to read some copyright protection thingy along with a site that shows what anime series were released in the USA, plus if I tried to sell it again then my account would be closed. :x So all these years I thought the series had already made it to our shores thanks to eBay making me believe so.

Well, I'm just glad it REALLY is arriving this time!

That might have been the same DVD bootleg that I got. I think I got it in April 2002. That was back a bit after I started collecting cels from it. I wanted be able to see cel scenes clearer. I didn't have a fast connection yet and the digital fansubs around at the time were very low quality.

The bootleg video looked like DVD quality, but the soundtrack was very hollow sounding. I remember when someone created a new fansub based off that source and it sounded like you were listening through a long tube the entire episode. :emb

My set was released by Manga International or Anime International if I can remember correctly. It's been a good long while since I last watched it but I do remember the characters names be translated oddly and the subs were enGrish. :P

I don't read Anime News Network or AnimeOnDVD websites very often anymore, but I see Rightstuf has put up their "To Heart" website here:

http://to-heart.rightstuf.com/

In their "Series"/"Producing To Heart" section they talk about the restoration process they did.

I found these comments interesting. Talking about problems they had with the film they were given:

"First, sometimes the cels weren't aligned properly when they were being captured to film...which means that the image seems to jitter slightly on screen..."

Then later, commenting on trying to eliminate frame jitter:

"This has proven to be one of the more difficult aspects of restoration, because many of the cels were not only off-center vetically or horizontally, but they were also distorted when they were captured to film."

I'm glad they're not incorrectly describing "To Heart" as a "shoujo" series like that other North American company did on the Sentimental Journey anime. :^^:
