Fan cels

Question, the plastic where they're drawn and painted... is it the same size than the ones of the real cels? do they also come with the holes on the top?

Some do come in same size and also have registration holes, at least all the ones I had commissioned have registration holes. It depends on the artist that makes them and where they get their supplies.

I only have a couple... but they are both bigger than normal cels and neither have registrations holes. I like them that way, because then they can't be mistaken (honestly or otherwise) as real production cels down the road.

When I was in Japan I used to make fan cels (since I could not afford them :( ) but you can buy plastics special to cels with registration holes (and they are standard sized). SO I used to use them. So I think this is depend on artists....

You can get acetate in all sorts of sizes at online art shops. I wonder if the ones made by Japanese artists are more likely to have registration holes? The acetate I've seen at Mister Art and Dick Blick don't have holes.

I did the cheap and lazy thing for mine: I used overhead transparencies. I'm sure professionals use better materials.

Like the others said it depends on the artist. The few I've made were done on acetate alternative called dura-lar and it was for wet media.
