Anime you simply can't stand...

Wow, lookie what I missed!

Bah. "Kenshin Oro Oro Oro" just didn't go far enough into the series. See now, although I absolutely understand what that person was getting at, I have a deep, abiding and unshakable love for Kenshin. And Inuyasha. and the good parts of Naruto! (we won't mention fillers here)

But see, that's what's fun about anime, yes? There is something for everyone.

I did one or two episodes of Bobobobobobobo and could not deal with it any longer. In spite of its starring one of my favorite VAs. Same with Dragon Drive, which had an intriguing beginning and just went...astray, somewhere.

Of recent times, the one I just can't get past no matter what I do is MAR. *sigh* I can't...do the talking bowling ball. Now, why I could manage some of the others of that ilk but not MAR, I have no clue. But there you have it.

It boils down to: There's no accounting for taste

In my opinion Bottle Fairy is a much more preferable alternative if you want an anime with short cute eps.

I have not seen that yet, but man does it look cute. A series I enjoyed because it was short (not necessarily cute) was Kurogane Communication. Details the life of the last human on earth, as she's accompanied by a group of special robots. The episodes are only 15 minutes long and the designs are interesting. Has a provocative twist and a pleasant ending.

I've noticed that I tend to be very critical of :

A) Any anime that has gained a huge fan-base in a short period of time (Naruto, Bleach, Ouran.. I shy away from the popular stuff.)

B) Parody anime, fan service anime, .. Anime for money's sake, basically. On the same token, things that are "rushed" to screen for the money.

C) Obscure Plot Anime. Where the endings make no sense, there's no closure, or the plot makes an abrupt u-turn from comedy to tragedy half-way through.

D) Anything I start watching when I'm sick, upset, or on the rag. (Not that I have to worry about that for a while now... ) I've found many times if I go back, and watch things again in a better mood, I really end up enjoying most of them.

I agree with a lot of the things you said Zag, especially:

I'm not a huge fan of overly popular stuff in general, not just in anime. I don't know if I approach it with a preconceived dislike or if things that appeal to the masses don't appeal to me, but it usually never works out.

I have to admit, I hesitated over Naruto since it was so popular, but I really enjoyed it once I broke down and watched it. Bleach and Ouran I didn't have pre-concieved notions about as I downloaded them right when they came out. I ended up likeing them both. They are a lot of fun. It is a huge investment in time to watch a long series like Naruto, Bleach, Monster, or Yakitate! Japan though, so I have to be really hooked by around episode 8 or I don't want to make the commitment.

The anime that I most recently tried hard to like only to give up was Basilisk. I rented it and by episode 3, I just wanted them ALL to just die right there. I thought the art was incredible, as was the animation, but there was no way I could become attached to the characters.

I don't tend to think a lot when watching (anything really) I just want to be entertained. I may not sit back and say "wow that's an awesome show/movie" when I'm done... Speed Grapher is like that for me. I wouldn't say I think its bad, but it doesn't rank as a favorite. I haven't found a lot of anime that i didn't like... I was never too fond of Bo-bo-bo whatever... or Naruto. I did find Blood the last Vampire quite boring... and I could never give Reign/Alexander a fair chance b/c I couldn't stand the stlye the show was done in.

Actually this is kinda hard....I usually get the manga first so I know I like it but here's a few I didn't care for:

Inuyasha (don't hurt me ) The first season was okay...but after that it just seemed like the series didn't change much and after a while I got bored and stopped watching.

Pokemon: it just annoyed me to crazy (it could just be that I didn't really get into any of the chracters).


Record of the Loddoss War: Too many issues to name...although I strangely did like the characters (which is why I finished the series).

Full Moon wo sagashite: The manga was great loved it, but the series was so boring....I couldn't get through an episode without wondering why I was watching it

I tried to think of the anime I can't stand and it took a while to get one to mind. (^^;;
The only one I can come up with is FLCL. I don't know why but I watched a few episodes and asked myself what this was all about.

I was actually cracking up at ducky's description of why she disliked the mech shows... because that is precisely why I LOVE them! hahaha! The ever-increasing strength and array of attack moves always makes me smile. Don't know why exactly, since it obviously takes a serious suspension of reality to be believable... But that is one of the reasons I like anime and cartoons in general... the lack of needing to follow any of the laws of nature or physics to be enjoyable. I just want to enjoy a good story and have some art that is pleasing to the eye. I'm easy to please.

However, having said all that, I am pretty picky about what I'll invest more than an hour or so in. I watch very few anime series each year, so I usually only pick up shows that seem to be right up my alley. I don't think I'd be fair to write about series I've hated, because if I don't like something pretty early on, I stop watching and get something else... so I probably haven't truthfully given many things a fair shake. The only thing I watched start to finish and wish I could get my wasted life back from is Eva. It's not that I don't like that genre, because I like Fafner and RahXephon a lot, and they are very much in the same vein as Eva, only better, in my estimation. It's interesting how your individual tastes will draw you to one show and repel you from another very similar show. I think there's a psychology research project in there somewhere!

I love Big Robot Anime! It's partly by a funny way I look at every robot anime.

However, I hear the same criticism for every robot anime!

Everyone says it's not original.

1. A boy who can pilot a special super mech that can save the world.
2. He'll fail miserably and become an emo
3. Later he'll recover and either semi save the world or just couldn't.

I'm tired of everyone saying that every robot anime is the same!!

each robot anime is DIFFERENT! There may be a boy who saves the world. But it's the Robot which really does it. The boy is just a puppet that the Giant Mecha controls. That's what no one really knows. But the Robot actually choses the boy and he becomes a parasite.

2. He'll fail miserably and become an emo
This is the stage where the boy begins realizing that he's being used by the robot. And he can't get away from it, because the robot has him mind controlled. The psychological discord is evidence of that

3. Later he'll recover and either semi save the world or just couldn't.In the end the parasite either creates a suitable bond or doesn't if the bond is strong enough, then he can save the world.

Don't let the guy who likes pretty much anything with big breasted schoolgirls who wiggle, tell you what's not to love about mech shows.



(Although I should talk... I'm the one who watched and enjoyed every little smidgen of Dameko Doubutsu... )

I started thinking about the things that tend to turn me off shows, and most of them have in common one thing: a tournament. Now, some of the shows I've liked best have a tournament in them as well (HxH, the first season of Naruto), but all too often what starts out with a real flair discovers itself basically plotless a dozen or so episodes in, and the entirety becomes a "who will win and move on to the next round?" thing.
I just end up wanting to yell "GET A WRITER!!" We can watch "who moves to the next round" on bad TV any time

I really hesitated about replying to this one, since I tend to like the kinds of cheesy anime most everyone hates. Which means, of course, my "anime I didn't like" list contains shows that have a huge fanbase and/or are considered "classics". But, to honor the bravery of those that have gone before me, I decided to suck it up and post in here.
