You know...I dont mind reading spoilers lol it makes me judge better really. And now I wont see this movie because of the Doggie Yup I base movies on that even though I know its fake lol damn animal lover in me. Although I do want to read the story... ^^;;
The good thing is that you don't actually have to see anything happen to the dog. It's really just good acting that lets you know what's happening. (and then a still dog on the floor but still I'm sure you see what I'm getting at.)
I thought it was a good movie, and I liked the ending for the most part.

on IMDB the users literally carried on a 12-15 page thread just
on the damn dog LOL!
To the point where they started to argue about it.
Apparently a handful were 'outraged' about the dog
scene (seriously, its not that bad).
In the end I thought it was silly.
It is a movie afterall-- should never deter you if
you are *really* curious to see it.
Besides, you can always turn on animal planet and
see the SPCA show and see them get rescued to give
ya that warm fuzzy feeling afterwards.
I'm a big fuzz-ball lover myself, still can't watch the
Meerkat Manor show. Anytime I switch it on, one of em
dies and I end up crying for 5 mins straight like a
&^@# lol!
I think it's funny that we live in an age where we can watch a movie about the extinction of mankind, yet get upset about an animal dying in the same film.
To me animals are completely innocent within their own means. Humans on the other hand, know what the hell they are doing and are assholes. Id rather see a stupid jock get sliced up than an animal XD But this is my personal opinion on movies with such content.
Well, just so you know. The dog gave it's life to save the protagonist

I think I am the only one really creeped out by the movie. Yuck. I hate jumpy movies and really, would any of you run into the dark like that?!? Ick.
I didn't expect the creatures to be so scary in this version considering in the original they were humans (talking humans) who kind of started a cult against the rest of the world. Wasn't meant to be scary.
BUT I did like that this is a whole new twist on the story and agree with the person who mentioned that you just have to look at this as a different movie all together.
The dog scene made me cry too but I think it added an important element to the story.
I saw this movie twice now and came back with a better understanding the second time around. The first time I was scared out of my wits, but the movie definitely was excellent. By far you couldn't have casted a better character than Will Smith. His incredible acting skills really shined in this movie. It has got to be insanely difficult to be "acting" amongst yourself, acting with no human contact in years.
But I wanted to share a few things...
Did you notice that the reason why the male lead (alpha male) was so keen on getting Will's character was because he caught the female lead (alpha female)? I didn't figure that out until I saw it again and realized that the alpha male had a revenge act against Will's character because he took the female away (think when he actually exposed himself to the light when she was captured).
I really wanted to know what was going to happen after the cure was found. I was hoping once Anna reached the civilization they would include more of a depth of what happened to everyone, including the (I think they were called) Night seekers.
Will's sense of familiarity with people can be noted when Fred was outside, where he wasn't supposed to be. We knew something happened and that Fred shouldn't have been out there, but Will hasn't had contact with humans in so long that he sort of "lost it." Because of that he didn't really think to wonder how he got there, other than that maybe he was "real."
I do agree that if I were by myself for over 3 years, I'd have the entire place rigged so that they would have one hell of a fight to get through all the defenses. That would include carrying a weapon at all times. I'm surprised the explosives were set so close to the house, as it did more harm than good.
I still can't figure out why he wouldn't have just thrown the grenade at them and go with Anna rather than stay behind and sacrifice himself. Once the glass cracked, he could have chucked the grenade through the hole, dove into the room and survived. Well, I guess it wouldn't have been as dramatic if he had survived.
The dog scene with Sam was incredibly sad, but she sacrificed herself for her human companion. German shepherds are some of the most loyal dogs out there. I almost cried seeing what he had to do to her.

Well I've not seen the film yet or for that matter the previous 2 adaptations of it, but having read the book I don't think I'll be anticipating seeing anything but a few components drawn from it given what's been said here. Can I just clarify with anyone who knows the book, does Ben Cortman crop up in it? Oh and does he get flashed by the female Vampires trying to lure him out?

Okay so my husband had the same thought as you and I couldn't convince him otherwise. My thoughts:
Well, he has been alone for three years, he lost everything and everyone, and he was partly the cause of the entire thing. Yes, he found a cure and could have lived but after all of that, would you really want to? I mean could you imagine how depressed he was and what he had to see? He had a goal, something to strive/live for. Once completed, there was nothing left for him. And, on top of it all, not every movie can have a perfectly happy ending. I think I would have ended it as well.
Just watched this movie and it scared to poo poo out of me. I haven't been that scared in a movie for ages. Im not really into scary movies so I wouldn't rate this as a great movie. If your into being scared out of your wits, go for it!
I agree it might seem strange that Smith didn't join the others in safety. My take on that was a little different and similar to what SME said. I think he realized that the leader (alpha male) was going after him specifically. After all, it even came out into the light when Smith grabbed the woman. I think leader was very attached to the woman; either because of some affection that somehow managed to survive the disease or a protective instinct. That male was also able to figure out the trap Smith set and revise it for his own uses. That takes a lot more rational thought than Smith was initially assuming with the sick ones.
If Smith had hidden with the others, that male would have kept on coming. On the other hand, if the male was able to kill Smith, he would have less motivation to go after the other two. He was assuming this had become personal. Smith belatedly realized how much smarter the male was in the end. He even tried to reason with it by telling it that he could cure it.That could have been a sign of desperation on Smith's part, but I think he was really trying to reach out to whatever intelligence was left in the male. Unfortunately, it was not enough.
I also noticed the connection between the male and female. I thought that considering her age she could have either been a relative or a lover pre-infection.
Even uninfected humans act irrationally when enraged, so I suppose that there was no possibility of reasoning with them even if they still had some human intelligence (which I believe that at least the lead male did).
I don't like scary movies. I will not watch scary movies. This movie didn't scare me. I liked the "Mummy" type effects that eased the scary factor for me. If you can control the "jumpiness" of certain scenes, then over all, it's not so bad. The most scary part is when you're waiting for something to happen.
