Answers from two of my favorite Betarians!
But…
I have turned Shojo once again, picking this not terrible impressive to look at, not exactly action oriented, romantic comedy.
The key was in the use of the musically connoted term “duo” rather than couple. The romance may be a bit predictable at times (although with some very funny moments
), but unlike other anime capriciously set in this milieu
, Nodame Cantabile really tries to capture the strange hothouse environment of the Conservatory. A high-pressure, insulated world of workshops, lessons, mentors, camps, festivals, juries, concerts, and competitions; where huge egos, fragile as glass, are alternately stroked and shattered as they interact with each other in the curious crucible that shapes the artists of the future.
