Small but nice CCS Update

Post by sensei »

In honor of my gallery's 6th anniversary (August 3), I've done a small but high-quality CCS update:

1. Four rough sketches (layouts in the thumbnails), I believe by CCS Animation Director Kumiko Takahashi, working out the basic appearance of one of the key scenes at the end of the climactic next-to-last episode, in which
Syaoran says "I love you" to Sakura.
CAUTION! MAJOR SPOILER!. All four are impressive in their own ways: begin here and use "Next" to work through the other 3.

This lot, which came up without a lot of fanfare on Yahoo Japan, led me to put together a batch of related items (mostly gengas) into a new gallery focused on this outstanding episode, where these sketches can be with others by Takahashi such as my beautiful shuuseis of a staggering Syaoran from just before this scene.

The others are thanks to the generosity of Sakura Bunnies, who was willing to take an offer on this set of treasures from her collection.

2. A fierce image of The Watery Card, from the same cut as a cel that I previous had but much better in showing the Card's intimidating expression as Sakura sics it on The Earthy.

3. A reunited matching set of cels of The Light and the Dark Cards. The Dark has been part of my collection for nearly 5 years, but it's wonderful to be able to return to her the missing top layer of her twin sister.

4. Another of my recent (and admittedly unexpected) additions to "The Scene" from Episode 65 is a beautiful cel of
Yue holding a spent Touya in his arms after the Power Transfer
(CAUTION! ANOTHER MAJOR SPOILER! But you know you want to click here and see!)

I expect that updates will come much more slowly in the future than in the past, but if nice things like these continue to be available, it's still a good time to be collecting!

Enjoy!

I thought I was the only one who noticed that Syaoran sketch set on YJ. Although it's not one of the cels, it's such an important scene for both him and Sakura. Personally, I think the sketches portray more emotion and look much more attractive than the final image.

Congrats on getting that and for uniting the Dark and Light layers together.

Decided to post this here too: Your most popular item in your gallery is interesting to say the least :emb .

Heh. That cel of The Light has been all over the world now. Good to see you paired those two together. :)

Since I know you like the history and provenance of your cels...
I bought the C8end cel of The Light on Y!J in November 2006
Sold her to Carkiechu in Sept. 2007
Now you have her in July 2008.

Quite a journey from Japan to USA to England and now back to USA. :D

And let me just say that I love your new Syaoran and Yukito/Touya additions. Quite excellent.

majinuub: Thanks for watching, but not making me get violent. :box1: In fact, the closing price was just 1200 yen, exactly the sum that I won the staggering Syaorans for 5 years ago. The gengas that once went with these roughs also sold (twice, once on YJ, again on eBay) for modest sums, but now they are in the hands of a curator who knows their full value. However, in some ways, as you say, the more impressionistic roughs are more impressive than the technically more proficient gengas. (Yeah, an' dem grapes prolly wuz sour, too.)

I'm bemused that Rengokuki from IY gets top place in my gallery's "Top 50" count, but, golly! the poor guy doesn't live long enough to make the closing credits in the one episode in which he appears. The gengas/ layouts of him are nice, though, especially the one in which he destroys the Mexican restaurant in Hades, so I'm not upset that he finally displaced poor Sakura-chan. (Maybe that's why she has that giant sweatdrop!)

ReiTheJelly: I appreciate your reminding me of the history of this cel. I do remember watching it practically down to the wire back in 11/06 -- but that's when I was after my "Smiley" Raphael from TnN, which had a higher wishlist count than this one. And we have such similar tastes that I don't mind getting out of your way from time to time. Still, it's great to see the two together in the end. And thanks for your comment on the Y/T spoiler cel. It truly is a beauty, well worth the wait.

Belldandy16: (Heh, you slipped in while I was finishing up the above.) Thanks for your comments. Yes, I remember watching CCS for the first time (in fansubs, ordered online on VHS tapes) and being continually surprised at how deeply the series affected me. I'd even wake up in the middle of the night after watching an episode, thinking about it. And yet it was just a kiddie show about a cute lil girl who does magic. Or was it ... ? I went through a phase where I thought I was just projecting my own speculations about life onto it -- and finally decided after a rewatching that it really was that good. It's again nice to "own" a piece of its creation.

Thanks, all for visiting.

Sensei,

What a great update. I am always intrigued by your excellent narration and animation history given with your cel sets. The story behind the Light and Dark is unique. Very few cels sets are ever reunited. Especially given the number of cels in a given animation episode that are never to be found. I need the time to add historical detail to some of my cels, but time is a precious resource. Your gallery is a rich resource and reflects the research and keen observation that you have put into the CCS establishment.

RoboFlonne: Heh. That was the one I bet you were going to mention. I like that one myself and only regret that I had to evict the A12 from the background that this cel loved so much.

rallihir: Thank you for your comments. As you know, your gallery was one of the models that I've used in deciding what was really worth collecting from this series (and from MKR as well), and so your praise means a lot to me. I'm glad that the context/history is useful. As a scholar, I know how important it is to preserve connections and associations that easily get lost with fading memories and the shifts of time.

cutiebunny: I'm glad the Syaorans made the impact they did. It's a wonderful scene, and it's easy to miss the significance of these drawings. I guess that's the responsibility of the scholar, whether dealing with Shakespeare or Syaoran.

It is true, though, that the descriptions of the other 3 were already mostly written, as I based them on 3 displays I'd already had up. Still, I spent an hour or so running the Light/Dark cut forward and backward and being very pleasantly puzzled until I was totally sure I was seeing what the studio actually did here.
