The hero of “Bake Neko”, the standout part of the trilogy that made up
Ayakashi, was such a hit that they gave him his own spinoff series for the Summer of 2007:
Mononoke!
In addition to its enigmatic, charismatic lead, and its involving, puzzle/mystery solving episodes, it boasts what is surely one of the most unique art designs in modern anime. Described by some online reviews as being evocative of Klimt, I found it to be even more like a fantastical melding of Nishiki-e and Pop Art à la Peter Max.
