Ok, so I took Frisky to see the dental specialist guy, Dr. Woodward. He took a look, and here's what he said, pretty much:

1) He's "way over 50% sure" that it's SCC (squamous cell carcinoma -- skin cancer, pretty much a death sentence for cats). If it is, he can't do anything; it's too advanced. All I'd be able to do is keep him comfortable.

2) If it's NOT SCC, then it looks a little more hopeful for him. He seriously doubted Dr. Harrell's guess that it could be osteosarcoma (his other guess was SCC), as that's very rare in cats. If it turns out to not be cancer, then he would go ahead and get a biopsy and go from there.

He did something called a microscopic cytology, where a slide gets pressed against the tumor several times to get a cell sample. Certainly easier, cheaper, and less painful for the cat than a biopsy. The results will come in tomorrow, and although he said it's most likely SCC I am still crossing my fingers.

And everyone, thank you so much for your donations and offers. At the rate I'm going I feel like I'm spending it as soon as I get it ^_^; And due to several requests I will go ahead and post my Paypal addy. It's ksyumekochan-AT-aol-DOT-com (edit for the obvious).

Got the results today. Alas, folks, this is what he said...

"Consistent with squamous cell carcinoma."

*sigh* As I was scanning in my new BGC genga lot, and as I type this, Frisky is curled up next to my laptop snoozing like he doesn't have a care in the world. My sweet boy, he loves me so (oof, headbutting me in the arm). I reiterate my earlier vow; I'd said that even if keeping him out of pain is the only thing I can do, then that's the least I can do for him, and that is exactly what I'm going to do (*headbutt in the shoulder, and again*).

Dr. Woodward had told me yesterday that I could get some cat Motrin from my regular vet and use that along with the buprenorphine (Frisky's painkiller). More effective together than by themselves, he said. I may just do that (*another headbutt to the shoulder*).

Thanks, everyone, for all of your support. Frisky is purring his thanks, too. Donations and offers are still appreciated and needed, however, if only for his painkillers. Oh, if I could glomp you all right now I would :)

(And he just HAS to bug me when I type... :P )

Same here. I am so sorry to hear about Frisky. Having a beloved pet (I had mine for 17 years) with a major illness was the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to deal with as an adult. I still get misty when thinking about him. So I know exactly how difficult the decisions are. Feel free to e-mail me if you need to talk.

my mom gave me this little parakeet on my 8th birthday and he passed away when i was 21 believe it or not! he lived so long because my mother took such good care of him. seriously he felt more like a little brother than a pet. i was a terroble kid, id tease him all the time when we were kids and he'd get me back by biting me constantly . LOL

man that was the most horrible day when we took him to the vet and found out he couldnt be helped (he'd had a major stroke and was paralized. he just stopped eating and we knew it wasnt long before he would pass).

man it makes me tear up just thinking about it. /sob
i miss him so much!

i pray Friskey has much much longer with you! enjoy every moment and take pictures of him!
for some stupid reason i just had one roll of film (and the pics werent that great) of him in the THIRTEEN YEARS i had with him.
ugh still pisses me off that i never took more of him (or with him together) :bawl

I have been taking pictures of Frisky every day since the 30th, partly for documentation of his "thing," and partly because I realized I have next to no pictures of him o.o;

Here's one of him last night, curled up halfway in my lap:

Priss-chan, I am so sorry to hear about your cat's cancer. I know its going to be rough. Our cat, Willy, had the exact same kind of cancer, on his jaw too. We gave him pain relievers to make him comfortable and the only time he seemed to be in pain was sometimes when he ate. We went from hard food, to soft food, to mashed up soft food diluted with milk and then to broth. Eventually we had to put him to sleep because the growth got so big on his mouth that he could not open his jaw to eat without a lot of pain.

My parents had to put him to sleep when I was away at school but they said he went very peacefully, almost as if he was finally "ready." He was such a cool cat - all white and deaf so he was quite a character. We would communicate to him with cat sign language. And since he was deaf we would massage him with the vaccumm hose - unlike our other cats he was not afraid of the sound. He was always getting into trouble too - he liked to climb curtains and stick his head into the mini-blinds. A couple of times he got his head stuck and I had to "rescue" him before he hung himself. He would knock stuff off of our furniture just for the thrill of watching it crash to the floor. He was so loving and hilarious.

Incidentally, last year we got a new cat, Dillon, and my mom thinks he's Willy reincarnated. Willy had this favorite toy - it was a little purple Barbie slipper and it kind of looked like a little mouse. None of the other cats played with it and it disappeared when Willy left us. But one day Dillon walked into our kitchen carrying the Barbie slipper in his mouth. We have no idea where he got it. His personality reminds us of Willy. I'm not so sure yet, but I do believe in reincarnation.

I can't imagine the party I'll encounter when I finally die and all of my pets appear at the pearly gates to great me - we've had so many over the years. Its so hard when they go, but I do believe that we will be reunited with them in the end!

Did Willy hang around people a lot when he was sick? Frisky's always been a lovey cat (to me), but especially lately he's been following me around and laying in my lap or next to me and sleeping next to me in bed at night. When my b/f comes home when I'm not home Frisky'll yowl at him because he's not me XD Heck, even right now he's kinda perched partway on my lap, looking content as can be.

I hope you can keep Frisky comfortable at least until it gets too much for him. I guess you have the gift of knowing he's not going to be around for too much longer and can make the most of his time left here. ^_^

I always felt as though my pets tended to get more clingy if they felt unwell or knew they were dying. When my cat got his cystitis recently, the first day he felt really sorry for himself and just wanted to be with me all day. He would just lay next to me wherever I was sitting. He was more active the following day though thankfully.

And with my rabbit, she was naturally a very affectionate animal but for a few weeks she seemed to just want to be held all the time. Unfortunately the tumor on the roof of her mouth showed itself too late and she died in my arms the morning I spotted it and phoned the vet. To date that's been the most painful loss when it comes to pets but I just know I'll have a hard time with my cats aswell when the time comes.

Anyway, take lots of pictures and enjoy the remaining time you have left together. ^_^ I only started thinking about taking more pictures a few years ago when I realised the only other pics I had were when mine were kittens.
