50K Rayearth/Miyu/Golden Bird Update

Post by sensei »

My 50K celebration (thanks, everybody) has begun with the nicest of my new items from the Anime Museum closing sale.

It begins with three lovely cels from the Rayearth OAV, one of a dramatic Hikaru and two new Umis, one showing her uneasily at rest, and the other, in the full exuberant flush of victory in battle. Also, from the TV MKR series, a lovely cel of a brilliantly windblown Umi.

An interesting addition to my gallery originally devoted to the 1987-89 Nippon Studio Grimm Masterpiece Theatre consists of two cels from the little known predecessor, Grimm Fairy Tales: The Golden Bird. It was produced by Madhouse in 1984 but released 3 years later as part of the Toei “Manga Matsuri” series, bundled with extended episodes of Maple Town and the “Power Rangers” prototype, Cho Shin Sei Flashman. The cels include an over-the-top villainess and an interesting, early use of colored trace lines (plus airbrushing!) to image the ethereal Golden Bird.

Finally, there are three gorgeous new Vampire Princess Miyu cels, even if one is a bit graphic, as you’d expect when such a character backslides on her low-carb diet and goes on a hemoglobin binge. Director Toshihiro Hirano made sure that all these images are no less than lovely, as he did with both Rayearth series, and so this update is partly a tribute to his work.

Enjoy! And thanks again to all who have visited in the past and helped me reach this milestone!

Congrats on 50k hits! I didn't know VPM TV series had the same director as Rayearth. Anyway, great additions, I like the colours on the cel with Miyu in the spotlight. It's also rare to have a sketch for AIC series. :)

Very nice update. Congratulations on achieving 50k hits! :) My favorite from this update is actually the witch from the Golden Bird. Very neat!

Thank you, Cordelia. I think Miyu did a lot of nice things with colors, using a much broader palate than most other series. It's always interesting to watch those red ribbons in the hair and see how widely they shift from scene to scene.

Thank you, Rei and Gonzai. (Rei -- did you check the Quirky Tour?). I watched those two cels at Anime Museum for a long time, but hesitated, since I knew that "The Golden Bird" wasn't part of the "Grimm Masterpiece Theatre." But I was intrigued, and when I got them I hacked around until I found someone who had actually watched the film. It sounds luscious, and I'd be willing to sit through the extended episodes of Flashman and Maple Town to watch this. Alas, I can't find it, even on YouTube! It's a shame that classic 1980s anime should be so darn hard to locate. (My "Grimm" DVDs are pirates, but I'm unrepentant since Saban has made no efforts to keep them in print, even if the theme song makes college students for blocks around have Proustian moments of déjà vu [déjà entendu?]).

ImageHey come along and join the fun. It's the time for fairy tales. Image

Thank you very much for the episode IDs, shango37! Now I am going to have to get hold of the series and watch it (when I retire...).
