Not a record CCS price but still...

210,000 yen for a genga set that goes with a cel-based series is not something that you see every day.
Still, those roughs are pretty. I got up early to see if there was a chance, but saw only a spume of salt water and a whirlwind of shark fins.
Congrats to the lucky SMJ bidder (not me, alas) who got the OP cel that was part of the same morning's attractions for about 1/5 the price of this lot. It's small but lovely. (And, yes, I got up to watch that auction too ... ya just never know.)

That's a pretty insane price for a set of genga, however, whenever you get two dedicated bidders together, the sky's the limit. I also believe that the roughs and genga for the first season OP were done personally by Nobuteru Yuuki, so that could also account for the price. Although the genga are beautiful, I would find it hard to justify the price for paper. Cels are still preferable.

Regardless of the anime, when really nice stuff comes, there will always be bidders that are willing to pay a lot for it. The price, while very high, doesn't surprise me.
It's a shame that we'll likely never see this item again. I hope that it is not split up, but, that seems to be getting more and more common as sketch sets continue to rise in price.

They are pretty, and I've always felt that the yellow roughs were the most collectable of the sketches, as they record the moment when the image was created by the senior animator, often the animation director or even the episode/series director. But, alas, the lucky winner had better have a jug of eucalyptus oil ready, as several of the items scanned already had advanced tape discoloration. This damage was one reason I decided to put this lot on my watchlist, as I thought discerning collectors might opt to pass up items already allowed to deteriorate due to neglect. But no such luck this time.
robinh, don't lose heart. My absolutely priceless "I love you" Syaoran sketches from Ep. 69 (like this set roughs + layouts) were knocked down to me for under 2000 yen, during a hot summer morning when the sharks were all sleeping peacefully in the octopus's garden. You gotta watch and you gotta believe!
