Importing Favorites to Firefox

Post by Keropi »

I switched browsers from Internet Explorer (which was dragging like hell) over to Firefox. All the my Favorites were imported to Firefox, but they were arranged in alphabetical order.

Before I start rearranging TWO THOUSAND links by hand, I just wanted to be sure that there wasn't an easier way of obtaining the same the order that I had earlier. Lol

Or must I really do it all by hand? 8O :emb :bawl :bawl :bawl

You mean other than by using the "Organize Bookmarks" option in Firefox? Not that I'm aware of, but you might try checking the extensions site for a plugin that might help?

Thanks. I figured as much, but I thought I would ask before I got started. :?

My links are now like this:

They're in alphabetical order instead of chronological order. Fortunately it's mostly only links from the past four months that are the most screwed up.

Please explain your reasoning.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

It would probably be easier if Internet Explorer stored bookmarks the same way that Firefox does. Firefox actually stores your bookmarks in an HTML file which you can also use to re-organize them. Let me see if I can remember where the file is ....

On a Windows XP system:

C:/Documents and Settings/*yourusernamehere*/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/*yourprofilehere*/

Couple of notes about this:

1) The Application Data folder is a hidden system folder. To see it, you need to access the folder options dialog and check the "Show hidden files and folders" option.

2) Your profile name appears to be a random series of characters. If you have more than one profile in Firefox there may be more than one folder here.

3) There will be two files: One called "bookmarks.html" and the other called "bookmarks.bak" or something like that. The latter is a backup file -- you need not mess with it.

Thanks. :)

Well...after moving links around for awhile, I noticed that it was pretty easy with Firefox to accidentally screw up the links. If my cursor jumped slightly (a glitch) I ended up accidentally placing the links I was dragging into a folder as I scrolled up the screen. Then I had to go back and try to find the folder that it fell in. Even cutting and pasting the links is an inexact science because the cursor still jumps slightly and I end up doing something I don't want to do (like accidentally copying a bookmark link four times in one click - how the hell did I do that? >_<).

I think I'll just browse with Firefire, but save YJ auction links with Internet Explorer.
