Stuff you haven't seen for sale

Post by Captain Haddock »

Hi all,

I was thinking about my perrenial favourite Ninja Scroll and how I'd never seen either a Mujuro or Shijima for sale since I'd started collecting some 15 years ago (though I have seen both in a private collection).

Has anyone ever seen either of these characters for sale? Who are the characters you'd love to see come up from your favourite movies/shows?

I might also pose this question on the Anime Cel collectors page on FB as I thought it was an interesting question.

I'm not really familiar with those characters, so I can't comment on the Ninja Scroll request.

But, I do like the question nonetheless. Granted, I haven't been very proactive in cel searching in the past few years, so I'm not sure how accurate my list is.

Sailor Moon cels I've yet to see for sale -

- Beginning (when they're surrounded by ribbons of their element) bank transformation cels of Moon, Chibimoon, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
- Saturn transformation cel. A special sequence was made & mimicked Moon's transformation pen animation for the SuperS Sega Saturn commercial. Haven't seen one in a gallery either.
- Bank attack cels from Mars' first, Jupiter's 2nd/3rd, Venus's first two, and Chibimoon's first sequence. I've seen (and own) douga from Jupiter's third sequence.
- Hanken cels from some of the posters I displayed in my room when I was younger, particularly the 1995 & 1996 calendars, as well as the S-Sailorstars VHS/Laserdisc cover artwork. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one fighting hard for those.

Pokémon cels I've yet to see for sale

- A decent Charizard. Not the hanken image that Mandarake sold a while ago.

Cardcaptor Sakura cels I've yet to see for sale -

- Certain close-ups of many cards such as Watery, Earthy, Dash, Mirror, Sweet, etc. I'm not a huge collector of the card spirits themselves, but some of the designs were nice.
- Matching cels for all the CCS backgrounds that I own. Not that this was a serious goal but...kinda thought I would have found a few more since I bought the bulk of these backgrounds in 2010-2012.

^ Oh yes, I remember this cel now. I let a friend who was a Saturn collector know about it and then promptly forgot about the cel. I tend to do that when I notify friends about things they might be interested in - No point in pining for it when you have a friend that would appreciate it more.

Some of the bank cels from Sailor Moon range from non-existent to glut. A couple years ago, chunks of bank cels from Mercury's "Shine Aqua Illusion", Chibimoon's first transformation & Mars's "Burning Mandala" sequence came out on YJ. Prior to that, I think I had seen a couple from Mercury's attack. But then, out of all the years that I've collected, I've only seen 2 cels for sale from Mars's transformation. It makes me think that some collector, somewhere, has held on to chunks of the sequence, and will only sell them when he/she needs the money or feels that there's a large profit to be made.

I've never seen any art from "David the Gnome". There have been some pieces advertised as being from the series, but they're always from "Gnomes" (a TV movie based on the same book that came out a year or two earlier).

There are also a couple of more recent anime series' that I'd love to find production art from. I've seen copy model sheets, but never any genga/dougas. Specifically:

- One Outs
- Real Drive

But, since I collect mostly from US cartoons/films, I don't often visit YJ, Mandarake, etc. So I easily could have missed them.

ANY artwork from Angel Sanctuary. I heard that some existed, but that most had been destroyed?

From CLAMP in Wonderland music video (the Miyuki-chan in Wonderland cast of characters):

Plus, all the actual Miyuki-chan in Wonderland cels that I've never seen for auction. And some of the A1 cels that I've seen auctioned, which promptly disappeared into black-hole collections, never to be seen again. [looking at you, A1end pan of the Jaberwoki and A1 Sumire...]

From Cardcaptor Sakura:

The Silent:

This particular image of The Void:

This pan of The Fight:

This pan cel of The Power:

and a cel of The Watery when frozen:

I'm sure there are plenty of other card spirit cels that I've never seen, too. Ones like The Cloud, The Change, The Little, and production cels of The Arrow.

Which close-ups are you looking for? I've got one of the Watery (http://stemcels.rubberslug.com/gallery/ ... mID=310121) and Graymouser has one, too, as well as a bunch of close-ups of various other card spirits (http://itamejihada.net/cels/ccs-cards/ccs-cards1.html)

In regards to shows I've seen cels and sketches from, I have not seen artwork of:

Cheif Juzo Hasegawa from Cyber City Oedo
https://youtu.be/i_hU5eUrVIs?t=644

the Spartas Hover Tanks (Battleroids) and the Red Bioroid from Southern Cross
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek6RlutHUZE

and , the monster mecha from Demon of Steel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SuSdlvqDNk

However, while I'm at it, I've never seen any production cels and/or sketches at all from:

BAOH
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcfykg9jIZM

Judge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h94DKMbuPSo

or

The Running Man short from Neo-Tokyo/Manie Manie
https://vimeo.com/channels/1122005/121083958

And, for newer shows, I haven't seen any sketches from:

Kaiba
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmXqQNKByVg

Kemononozume
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3AvlxZBMXU

Kurozuka
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tP1OODyPmY

or

Redline
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmNnkvC171w

I'm hoping that some sketches will show up from the current series:

Garo: Vanishing Line

and

Devilman Crybaby

Hi all,

Thank you for all the responses, as I suspected we all have those illusive little gems that we're all searching for.

It's interesting with Sailor Moon and CCS given that both series still have a lot of material coming up for them. But I guess they're both so large that there are always short or very popular sections that don't make it to the online market. It's an interesting question as to how much stuff gets kept by the production staff, then gets first preference to their mates before finally making it out into the wider market (or simply destroyed as in many cases).

Reithejelly - well with Miyuki Chan you can console yourself with the fact you have an extremely collection of which I am extremely envious. :)

GuyverIII - I did watch Cyber City back in the day and am thinking of starting to collect it given it's also directed by Kawajiri. The cels from my own experiance are scarce, even more so I'd say than Gunnm or NS. I can see why you'd struggle to find him though, his sections in the OVA only amount I'd expect to about a minute or two of animation tops. I'm also very envious of your Cyber City collection, it's awesome!

It is interesting how that works! :)

I remember now that I've never seen production art for the series Noein. A quick search on Mandarake shows a settei listing from September of last year. https://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/auction/i ... dex=538649

Yes, I suspect that some of the CCS images Rei shares simply don't exist. I was horrified recently to read that when Nelvana (of ill repute among CCS fans for some reason) donated their archive to a Canadian institution, the person who evaluated the collection found that many pan cels had simply been folded and stuffed into file folders.

I never expected to own the closing image of Sakura and Tomoyo from Ep. 10, and when I took delivery I got a sense of why such treasures don't come up FA much: While the bg and the book layer under Sakura's feet were OK, the cel itself had been damaged seriously, probably at the time it was pulled off the light desk where it was photographed. Fortunately, one could crop the image to exclude the damage. But since the cel existed only to make the photographic footage, once the shutter clicked for the last time it now was trash and often was treated as such, probably before it left the camera room.

I've never seen artwork (excluding backgrounds) from the earlier episodes of Princess Tutu. It seems like everything that was salvaged was from the later episodes.

There's also a few scenes from Escaflowne that I've never seen before that I'd basically die for. Young Millerna, for instance, or a front-facing shot of Millerna and Dryden at their wedding (I've seen a few side-views of them). I also haven't seen a wounded Dryden cel (though I have seen a douga and own a copy douga of a wounded Dryden).

Ah, so much stuff I want from Escaflowne and Princess Tutu that I've never, ever seen and probably never will. :(
Actively Collecting:
Escaflowne, Gokinjo Monogatari, Infinite Ryvius, Record of Lodoss War, Revolutionary Girl Utena
Looking for select cels from:
CardCaptor Sakura, Daria, Fushigi Yuugi, Gall Force, Gokinjo Monogatari, Gunsmith Cats, Jubei-chan the Ninja Girl, Kaito St. Tail, Magic Knight Rayearth, Oniisama E, Please Save My Earth, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
Looking for production artwork from:
Ashita no Nadja, Full Metal Panic!, Juuni Kokki, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, NANA, Princess Tutu

I keep thinking about somewhat more recent series that may not even have paper artifacts. I've yet to see anything from Hanayamata (incorrect capitalization, but more readable) or Blue Spring Ride (English title). I think they may be recent enough to be all digital in art production.
