FY was one of the first series I watched fansubed several years ago. I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much that as soon as Pioneer had it up for preorder, I put in my order. That was back when they were about $200 a pop.

I could have done with a little less "Miaka --- Tamahome" repeated 20x in one breath. I watched it both with my then BF now husband, and a separate viewing cycle with my mom and younger brother. Again, the same Miaka x Tamahome name repetition applies... Other than that, I had wished at the time that they'd stop jerking everyone around with the yo-yo relationship of Miaka and Tamahome. I never found her annoying. I'm probably one of the few who (at the time) enjoyed her JP VA -who is Araki Kae. Araki Kae is pretty well known for having done the voice of "Chibiusa" on Sailor Moon. I had an easier time sympathizing with her than the ----- known as Yui during the TV series. Not everyone fell in love with her either. Chichiri remained as he was, Mitsukake continued the same, and Chiriko was the same as well. Hotohori was enamored with her before he even knew her -the stories he had heard had served as one of the few sources of light in his childhood. He hoped for someone who would care for him, solely for being himself -Miaka was definitely like that. Only, she fell in love with Tamahome. Nuriko had been traumatized by the death of his sister, and tried to bring her back the only way he knew. After living life like that so long, actually being more of his sister than himself, he developed feelings for one of the few females he held respect for. Tasuki... well.... Tasuki is Tasuki ^_^ He carried her off from the get go, didn't he ^_^ (sshhh. don't spoil my delusion :P) lol.

Kaona wrote:I prefer subs because I enjoy hearing the character's personality reflected in their voice the way it was originally intended.

However, my children are little (5 and 7) and cannot keep up with the subs, so I am always on the lookout for a good anime with an English dub. Otherwise, I end up having to read the subtitles to them, and reading Shounen Onmyouji aloud was quite the verbal challenge!

Am I wrong, or is Kyou Kara Maoh, Cardcaptor and HunterxHunter not available with English dub? Any other suggestions for similar series that are in available in English?

They have seen Fruits Basket, Inuyasha, Bleach, FY, hate Shounen Onmyouji in English, all Miyazaki movies, and Black Blood Brothers dubbed.

Sorry, Ducky, I didn't mean to go off on a tangent, but since this group seems to like a similar type of anime, I'd thought I would ask!
Cardcaptor Sakura has an english dub avalible on dvd for about 1/3 of the series (and at least one of the movies if not both) I believe. It is a dub only release and edited. I have read that there was a faithful english dub produced on the other side of the world, but I have never encountered it. Magical Doremi is cute and at the same age group as Cardcaptor, but it has not been released (english dub) on dvd as far as I know. There is always Magic Knights Rayearth. That is also a Clamp title and avalible on dual language dvds. Sailor Moon is always a popular choice with little girls. Hmm... My 8 1/2 year old likes the Ranma 1/2 OVAs. She's also caught some of FMA (which I think is a bit too old for her) but she likes it anyways. She has seen some Kirarin Revolution. It's been awhile, but maybe a title like Kaleido Star might be a good one as well?

I also forgot to mention, but Stellvia is a rather nice little series. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is pretty good across the board, but it is an older series.

I definitely agree with that.

You know, I watched it years ago, and I don't remember being particularly annoyed by name repetitions (though I do remember one of the omake making fun of it :P ). I did hate the relationship yo-yo, though. :x As soon as one of them decided that they wanted to be together or it was okay to be together, the other one would decide that they had to break it off for the other person's sake. :flushie It just got annoying after a while. I think the part in particular that made me throw my hands up in disgust was when they met Tamahome's master (I think, it's been a while). They both yo-yoed within a few episodes. :x

I did like the series overall, though. I really need to go back and rewatch it subbed. :D

Kaona, Hunter x Hunter is only available fansubbed, since it's never been licensed. Have them try Vision of Escaflowne! Great show, and there's a dub available. If they like Cardcaptors/CCS, Saint Tail might be a good one to check out. Unfortunately, the last third or so of the series isn't dubbed. Which is kind of sad for people who only watch the dub, since that's where the main portion of the love story is. Oh, and I'm totally in love with One Piece. It's got a new, better dub, and is apparently being rereleased from the beginning by Funi. Amazon link

Also, before you go out and buy Ranma, keep in mind that there is some nudity--mostly female frontal (chests) and some behinds from both sexes. I don't know how strict you are with your kids, but it's something to consider. :D

Well ducky, you know how I feel about FY. :P Miaka definitely was annoying to me at first, though with the number of times I've watched now, it's getting less and less, and I'm liking her more.

I'm with the others who suggested Escaflowne - that's my favorite! Angelic Layer is a cute show for younger audiences too. I'm pretty sure it has a dub track on it.

Add me to that unpopular group. I'll watch anime in any language but I prefer English for the first time through if I can. (I had an explanation as to why but decided to delete it. No sense having a second rant. Short end - I have dyslexia so I prefer ease.)

I'm so happy to hear you thought it was nice to watch. If you want a strong Yuu Watase character, check out Ayashi no Ceres. Aya is a much stronger character than Miaka. ANC is a lot darker than FY and shorter. It's 24 episodes grand total. No OVAs. (It's even darker in the manga. 8O ) A lot of people who loved FY, didn't like ANC as much. Although, I also heard the reverse is true. I love them both but I love everything Yuu Watase does. :^^:

Congrats on accomplishing quite a feat! 52 episodes is a big commitment.

I love FY and AnC both.. alot in fact. I Just like collecting cels from AnC more because there is more blood in that series and yeah.. because it is darker. I want to watch Fy again now...

I show this one and a friend told me about Harukanaru Toki no Naka de . Very similar story line but less annoying. I had to agree the relationship was so so annoying back and forth gets old. The ,ale need to dominate and destroy ONE girl got old fast! Other then that I enjoyed the series entirely. Had to had the disks though because my daughter liked it too and I couldn't handle a 3 day of repeating it.
Most Bishies are eyecandy therefore they must all be attractive for the females. One Problem though Can we have MORE LEGAL eyecandy??

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I am going to go and check them out in detail.

In addition to anime for my own children, I am teaching two manga drawing/cel painting classes to 3rd - 7th graders this summer, and my intention was to show a few episodes a day from a variety of anime and this will help quite a bit.

I am still trying to figure out how to avoid some of the dubbed language. I may have to send a note home on the first day notifying parents their children might encounter some of the following words during the week - damn, dammit, bitch, bastard, and hell! Otherwise we are going to be stuck with Saturday morning kid TV anime, 'cause even Inuyasha has a potty mouth. :puzzled My husband gave me "the look" this week when Jirou yelled "bitch!" about 5 times in 30 seconds in Black Blood Brothers while the little ones happily watched the English dub. I just cringed and gave my usual reminder about what words only anime and mommy are allowed to use. Ugh.

So far, and without wandering too far down the relationship/genderbending/why that guy has purple hair and wears a dress trail, I think I am showing Spirited Away and 1st episodes of Inuyasha, KKM (if I can find it), Fruits Basket, BBB, Bleach, FY and maybe One Piece, Death Note ? or something that appeals to boys - Naruto? Need help on that, too, especially since I found out today the vast majority of children signed up are BOYS. :O

I was hoping for a shojo loving group...those boys are going to want me to draw Dragonball and Transformers, I just know it. /wah /hp

WOW! That's kind of odd that the majority of your sudents are boys. I think you're good with Bleach and Inuyasha though. They'll like that as well as Naruto.

To go back to ducky's point, all this talk has me wanting to rewatch FY. Guess I'll be dusting off those DVDs. Let us know what you think of the OVAs. I'm always curious how people view them. I'm not a fan of them but I have them all. I personally think they just keep getting worse as you watch them.
Can you hear this fangirl squee?!

I watched the first 2 OVAs.

I'm glad that they packaged them together, since OVA 2 is a direct sequel of OVA 1. If I had only seen one, I would have probably been irritated.

OVA 1 alone, is pointless in my opinion. As an opening/set-up to OVA 2, then it works well enough.

I haven't seen OVA 3 yet. But 1 & 2 aren't bad. They take place in the same "world". The characters stay true to how they are in the TV series. The omake for OVA 2 are a lot of fun! So if you enjoy the show, then the first 2 OVAs are a fun little addition.

3rd up to 5th grade boys will probably want to draw Naruto, Ninja Turtles, samurai and Mecha (maybe Avatar too).
6th and 7th grade boys will probably start wanting to draw girls. But I don't know you want to show them the latest harem anime.
