One website is selling a Chuck Jones sketch from a VERY famous Bug Bunny cartoon. They listed it under (and advertise it as) "Original Production Art". I thought the price was rather "fishy" even though it was still $2000. $2000 for a Bug Bunny drawing is expensive, but not for this particular sequence if it was original. So, I decided to ask. Turns out it was NOT original production, but a publicity drawing done AFTER the film was released in 1959. So, they labeled it as original production, but it was just a publicity REproduction, and who knows how many drawings they made of that particular shot.
I'm pretty sure I know which piece you're referring to (the price and description you give match) and I have to say I thought the description was fair and not misleading. Did they change it after you got in touch? True, it's in the production sketches section but of all their subsections that is the one that most fits, imo. The listing of the actual piece just says original Chuck Jones sketch - which it is. It doesn't look like a production sketch and, as mentioned, the price is far too low for THAT scene (well THAT short in general!!!).

I'll also add that original CHUCK JONES art is rare. I've been searching for years, in particular for One Froggy Evening. There's no need to worry about how many sketches he's done of one particular moment, as they're just so hard to come by. I've been lucky in aquiring two One Froggy Evening production concept sketches by Chuck himself. Whilst they are production, they are no where near as high in quality as the Bugs sketch and were much higher in price. I've also encountered a Chuck Jones original concept sketch from What's Opera Doc? and the same applies (low quality, very high price) as well as a couple of production cels from the later which have asked a five figure sum.
Also seen a couple of other promotional sketches and cels that were signed by Chuck and some confirmed as drawn by him, similar to the one offered, done for publicity or gifts from What's Opera Doc, Duck Dogders and One Froggy Evening and they sold at 2000-3000. Very saddly, I missed out on the Michigan Frog :l

Sorry, I hate disagreeing with people.

To get back on topic I've never encountered any mislistings or labelings. The best bargains I've had are when a normally high end cel is listed at the same time as a real primo cel that everyones is crazy bidding on, so I snag the other cel for the opening bid.

I just went back and checked, and it does looks like they changed it and added more to the description since I inquired about it several months ago. If I remember correctly, it originally was labeled as "Original drawing signed by Chuck Jones" in the description. Now, it says the following: "Original Drawing by Chuck Jones Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd,
enacting a famous scene from What's Opera, Doc? Hand signed by Chuck Jones Authenticated by Linda Jones." Currently, it is listed under "Warner Brothers Animation Art Original Production Drawings, Storyboards & Model Sheets " ......

I am kind of a BIG stickler with art pieces, especially when I pay lots of $$$. I think a seller needs to disclose if an art piece has a flaw and if it was restored. And if it is a promotional piece produced AFTER a production has been released, they need to say it in the description. It still does not directly say it, although the description now implies it if you know how to look into the wording. A novice collector can make a serious error into thinking it is an original production piece. I just really think it is good seller etiquette. to be as direct with details as humanly possible. Prevents a lot of headaches that way.

BTW, the seller in this discussion is a very nice person and honest when answering questions. I am not sure who labels the artwork on the site though. I do wish they would say "promotional drawing" on it. But, the newer description is a definite improvement than when I first saw it.

I haven't said any big mislabeling for series I like and alot of the time series I like are cheap enough anyway. If I see cels I don't want but know the series I will usually try to drop the seller a line and let them know what series it is. This can of course help buyers as well as once the cel is labeled correctly they can see it in their searches and then buy it. So I think of it as win-win mostly.
